I replaced the 72pin in my childhood NES and am collecting NES games now. It's pretty cheap to start up a collection of old school NES games and I love them. I want everyone's advice on which games I "need" to get for my NES. Please give me some advice on what to buy next. I'm pretty much willing to buy any game you suggest; I will dedicate the buy in your name. The following is what I've bought to date:

I'd pick up Final Fantasy. No number after it, just the original. Thats the only one I finished. Also, Zelda 2: Adventures of Link.

Final Fantasy is one of those games I have in a corner of my parents house. And I have Zelda 2, just put the wrong name down (plus it's one of those games I have at my parents' house). Fixed now.

I'm going to have my parents mail me my old games from when I was a kid. Love me some 80s gaming.

what was that lucas arts game?

Dragon Warriors 2-4. Zoda's Revenge: Star Tropics II, which I think was the last or one of the very last NES games ever produced.

I need to buy a Power Glove as well. Dang this is so addicting.

i remember...maniac mansion

Please give me some advice on what to buy next.

Well, you still need the best baseball and football games the NES ever saw.

Those would be Baseball Stars and NES Play Action Football.

Also, Ring King. Still a 2-player blast.

I also know i need to buy Castlevania 1 and 3.

**Bought now**

Dynowarz. Seriously, this is a fun side scrolling shooter.

Air Fortress. Same deal.

Contra

How can you not have Contra?! It's amazing! So satisfying once you get to the point that you can beat it without using the Konami code as well. Then you can call yourself a gamer.

I think you mean RBI Baseball and Tecmo Superbowl, sir.

Faxanadu. I really loved it, but it was damn hard at the time. Probably not so much now.

I'll second the vote for Contra.

You already have World Cup Soccer, Adventures of Bayou Billy and Zelda 2? I'm done!

Kid Icarus is a favorite of mine.

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say.

Zanac-the best schmup ever made. Also hard as balls.
Baseball Stars
Metal Gear
Crystalis

You must also play Blaster Master and Fester's Quest.

Dragon Warrior 2 is the weakest of the four NES DW's imo. I'd definitely go for 3 or 4.

Another fantastic RPG is Destiny of an Emperor, based on the ancient Three Kingdoms novels of China.

For side-scrolling action, Shatterhand is good but tough, and I had some fun with Low G Man.

...and if you like turn based strategy, I love Bandit Kings of Ancient China, Romance of the 3 Kingdoms, and Genghis Khan. For a slightly lighter version, Shingen the Ruler was also good for its day.

Isn't DW4 kind of pricey these days?

Also a NES is not complete without a copy of Mike Tyson's Punh Out.

Rygar
Operation Wolf
River City Ransom
Defender of the Crown
Skate or Die
Tecmo Bowl

Seconded.

Amen!

Also, check out:
The Guardian Legend
The Battle of Olympus
Jackal

Yes, you need punch out, even if you've beat it to death. Tecmo Bowl and River City Ransom are requirements as well. Tecmo Bowl is the only football game I've ever actually enjoyed. My brother still plays it to this day. Also, the Tengen Gauntlet should be played 2-player. Some of my fondest memories are of playing that game obsessively over the summer with my brother.

Dragon Warrior 2 is probably my favorite of the series so far. 3 and 4 are collector's items, so if you like it I'd recommend going for the Gameboy Color version of 3 and the DS version of 4. The GBC 3 might be hard to find, but unless it got tossed in a move at some point it should still be around here somewhere so I can take a look if you're interested.

Most of the series is, but DW4 is the worst, true. I picked a complete, but used version (box, manual, etc) up in 2003/4 for $60something off of ebay when it was $88 at a local store. It may be more nowadays. Then again, with the DS remake, the price might have come down.

Split that baby: Baseball Stars and Tecmo Superbowl.

You already have Metal Gear, which would be my other suggestion.

Nope! RBI Baseball was janky. Baseball Stars gets recognized for the team management stuff, but it's the core baseball engine that's superior to all the rest.

Tecmo Super Bowl is a cute little slightly-resembles-football arcade-style game, but NES Play Action Football was an awesome early football sim.

Updated with a handful of more buys. I also have at my parents' house a copy of
Little League Baseball: Championship Series which I think is the best baseball game ever.

I know it's multi-platform but Joust was a game I played on the NES a ton with friends.

Ducktails. For sure.
Friday the 13th.
Snake Rattle and Roll.
Kid Icarus --- so addicting to think of old games I adored.

-- Battletoads. A huge omission.

R.C. Pro Am.
Robocop.

Super Sprint!

Joe Montana dropping back 50 yards to throw a 100 yard strike to Jerry Rice is authentic football sim action...I don't care what anyone says.
