I know, in the age of NHL 14, there's a reasonable question to ask about how well a text-based game will translate, but DAMN if i'm not really, REALLY interested in this.
It's not entirely text-based, but Football Manager's one of the most popular games in the UK in a world where FIFA and PES exist.
A friend of mine pre-ordered it and played around with the beta and is generally impressed. The historical side of the game that comes with the OOTP lineage is a big plus, especially the WHA in particular. Including the newer, outside the mainstream statistics like Fenwick and Corsi is pretty neat and probably the thing that will push me over the edge. If the simulation is sound and the AI uses those statistics it would probably make a better GM than a number of actual NHL GMs.
The game should be right up my alley. In high school I was a part of an online simulation league that was pretty fun, then I found the freeware Eastside Hockey Manager and put a tonne of time into that, including playing in an online league the friend I mentioned earlier ran. NHL:EHM 2007 is one of my favourite games of all-time and I put countless hours into that, it's a shame it didn't work out and the release of that series basically killed the original EHM community.
I'm holding back for a few reasons. First because I never pre-order games after getting badly burned once and second because I'm just getting increasingly cynical about hockey in North America. The statistical analysis is what's driving my interest at this point, and with the game including that stuff I expect that will win out in the end.
Edit: Hadn't realised it's been released. I guess now it's just a matter of me waiting for positive long-term verdicts.
I presume it has the custom league stuff OOTP has? Being able to set up a European-style, non-cartel league without the draft and restrictions on free agency would be pretty awesome to play around with.

This looks awesome. I'll definitely be kicking the tires in the next week or two.
