Superman vs Batman Movie Catch-All

Eh, it's fine?

I mean, let's be honest: Batman's a billionaire who spends his free time beating up the poor and mentally ill in a futile attempt to achieve personal catharsis. If you really want to to find reasons to make fun of him, you will. That photo is pretty low on the list.

To be fair those poor and mentally ill, though they're not all that, are usually in the process of doing some very nefarious things before Batman starts swinging.

But this is why I try not to dig too deep into super heroes. In the end they're just punching people in the face to solve problems.

I do like the fabric look though. It reminds me of Kevlar and ripstop. I can't wait to see it in action.

I think what I realized anew was that every batman looks like crap.

Seriously:

Do any of those look good when shown in a well lit studio?

He looks sad. Of course he's Batman, so, of course he's sad, he just never shows it.

I think the Bale/Nolan suit does. Or at least it looks way better than the others in "real" life. The only beef I really had with it was the face-- I feel like they should have opened up the jawline of the mask more, because with such a small opening it does look too much like a bulky, goofy motorcycle helmet.

apropos of nothing, searching for Batman on Netflix right now sure turns up an odd result.

You hit the nail on the head. Batman's supposed to inspire terror in those he pursues, like a movie monster. And as the old rule in monster movies go, you can't show the whole creature in full lighting because it won't stand up to that scrutiny. It can't be feared if you can see it all in studio lighting. And yet, one would assume this Batman's supposed to run around in broad daylight fighting whatever DC Universe monstrous force will be taking on the Justice League. It's interesting to note that before Christian Bale's Batman showed up during the daytime in The Dark Knight Rises' Gotham, no live action Batman had been seen while the sun was up since Adam West back in the Sixties.

I liked this trailer more when I saw it in the theater before Age of Ultron.

Yeah, because he was showing ones that look like crap.

Er..I can't remember if anyone has said this since the trailer came out but...why aren't we seeing Wonder Woman in it?

On a related note, here's your Suicide Squad.

I agree with the first reply: LOL.

Yeah... I don't know what it is about DC's stuff. It just always looks corny. Even as an artist & designer (ie, trying to move beyond my fanaticism) I'm struggling to figure out what it is about Marvel that they seem to be able to pull off their goofy costumes, but DC's stuff just looks hokey and/or contrived. I mean, I like the premise of the Suicide Squad (no experience with it beyond what they have in Arrow, and that's weak at best), and the idea that they're forced to team a bunch of super villains together should be cool (and is, by all I've heard about the comics). I really want to like what they're trying to do here. But this... it looks like a bunch of decent cosplayers (or over-zealous LARPers?) doing a "Suicide Squad/ post-apocalyptic" mashup theme.

Harley's at least got a decent Harley smile going. The clothes? Well, all I can say is at least she's not in a corset.

Yeah, I was going to say I thought Harley looked alright. Which is kind of odd, because the more I look at them all the more I think they actually look like cosplayers that designed their costumes based on AAA game designs, yet Harley has deviated from her game design. The level of asymmetry in all of them just looks like they took design cues from Splash Damage's Brink without understanding how to direct the eye.

To be fair, if you put the Avengers together just standing there it would probably have a similar "oddness". More often than not it seems like Marvel characters seem to be doing something powerful or heroic which makes them look less like cos players.

I'll wait until I see it in action, though... damn, that is a God awful idea for how to do Killer Croc.

Just God awful.

So Suicide Squad is a sequel to Suckerpunch where Baby Doll has become Harley Quinn?

I try not to hate on movies that I haven't seen yet but good lord their outfits look like really good cosplay not costumes in a multimillion dollar Hollywood production.

Wow, it sure does.

I don't think Harley's costume is appreciably better than the others, but Margot Robbie seems to be in character instead of just standing there, and that makes all the difference.

I think the cosplay comments come from the desaturated color pallet. Katana, Deadshot and Harley look fine because they have an actual color pallet, and some contrasting elements. With everyone else, all the detail work kind of blends together.

And the guy in the letterman jacket and Hammer pants isn't helping.

I'm not really familiar with the Suicide Squad lineup but why are there about five guys who look like generic enemies from a Call of Duty game? Are they supposed to be actual characters?

Also if you're going to have what appears to be a zombie in a letterman jacket, maybe go a little lighter in tone because no one's taking that seriously.

At least Harley is smiling.

Both of the DC movies look like they are being setup to fail. I guess we will have to reserve judgment until after they release. I think Batman might pull something decent out in the end but that suicide squad movie looks atrocious.

Is that Will Smith?

Yup, playing Deadshot. No idea why Deathstroke has 2 eyes or who Kicking Bird is playing.

Yeah, that may very well be the key-- Marvel's ads never have their characters just standing around, that I can recall. They always seem to be within the context of their world/events, which gives weight to why they're dressed the way they are.

The latest from DC, on the other hand, tends to just have their characters stand there with little or no context. This Suicide Squad lineup is no different. I get the need to fuel the fans' excitement, but showing off what amounts to studio costume cataloging pictures isn't the best way to generate buzz.

Yeah, I don't think it's markedly better than the others, but it's at least the actress is within character, which helps. Maybe it's also that I'm more familiar with Harley than any of the others, so I'm just comfortable with her character more than I am with the others.

I don't even know which one is Kicking Bird, let alone which one is portraying Deathstroke. None of the people in that picture have any resemblance to anything I've seen of Deathstroke in the past.

Here is Deadshot with his mask on.

Yeah, DC has completely lost me in where they're going. I just don't understand anymore. Dawn of Justice... but nothing but Superman v Batman in the trailer...

Also, I'm confused, why isn't Leto in that Suicide Squad picture... or am I just not seeing him? I don't think I could miss something that obvious. Wasn't Joker supposed to be a part of it? *scratches head*
