XBLA Catch-Much: Farewell to XBLA

Not to say that I haven't lost some of my spastic twitch game skills from my younger years, but this is not the same Street Fighter that I pounded into nothing on my Super Nintendo.

It feels about a hundred times more difficult than that game was, short of maybe the final fight.

I've been playing for an almost an hour and I'm only like 4 fights into the story mode.

I'm actually feeling a little bit of buyer's remorse on this one.

It IS the same Street Fighter that we've all played a billion times. Other than the ability to play against folks over live, there isn't much new about it. That said, I'll probably buy it if it seems like a lot of Goodjers are playing it, even though I already own the game several times over.

EDIT: By the way, if you are looking for some Street Fighter love and don't care so much about online play, you might want to check out the recently released Street Fighter Alpha collection for the PS2. It features perfect arcade ports of all three Alpha games, plus the stunningly fun Pocket Fighter (aka Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix), and doesn't cost much more than this Xbox Live Arcade release.

OK, I'm somewhat relieved. But what is this "Play Station" you are talking about? And why are there two of them?

I'm in, I'm a SF nut so I'm going to be all over this. Might be the first game I actually get all the achievements in.

I played a bunch, I don't think it's just you ThinJ, the AI is psychotic. I remember being able to beat the SNES version on 7 stars and on this one I couldn't beat it on 0 stars. I tried 4 different difficulty settings and the computer reacted exactly the same on all of them, so I think it's just pooched in that regard.

I did about a half dozen multiplayer matches, no lag at all, ran really good. Anyone wants to do some matches tonight let me know.

Sounds good! I paid for Frogger and Galaga, I'm paying for this.

Thank god I'm not the only one.

I too beat the original SNES game on full difficulty with every character, and it was never as difficult as this is even on it's default setting.

Nope don't worry your not the only one

I suck at the game, I heard it's this hard becuase it's basically from the arcade difficulty

but it's just insanely hard.

hmmm... a challenge! I will have to school this AI.

DAMNIT GUILE PISSES ME OFF!!!

just had to vent ;)... went undefeated until fight number 2 in the Guile match, and then I have yet to beat Guile using Ryu, and even made a switch to Chun Li. Have to take a softball break and give it another go later tonight. ARRRGH!

(and this is on difficulty 3!!?!)

Has anyone tried SF2 online yet? I long to hear tales of lagless gameplay.

I picked this up today as well.

I don't remember being this bad at it. I pretty much can't beat anyone, even with the Difficulty set to its lowest setting.

Online mode has thus far turned into a mixed bag. When you are in a match, everything is as lag free as you could hope for, as if your opponent was on the couch next to you. Unfortunately they have this apesh*t crazy lobby system for quarter mode that seems to be very very broken.

Basically its a mode where everyone sits around and watches the other people fight, winner stays loser goes into the queue (if you played DOA4 online this should sound familiar). The stupid thing about it is that whoever is currently the "winner" is the host, so every time that person is beat a new host is chosen and everyone has to reconnect to that host. This wouldn't be bad if it didn't drop everyone 90% of the time when this occurs.

1 on 1 quick matches work fine, no problems at all, but the quarter matches definitely need some work.

Of course the AI is harder here than on the SNES. This is the original game, which of course was an arcade game, which of course existed to make you shove more quarters into it. The AI was quite a bit tamer on the SNES.

The AI is hard. I am struggling on ZERO stars! I was no master, but I used to be pretty good. The computer is cheesing Guile with the Flash kick and those damn long legs.

I got my ass whipped by the computer in Street Fighter. Never was good at this game. Wonder when the classic arcade Joystick is coming out for the 360 for the simple games like PacMan, Joust, maybe Defender...

Feel that sting boys? Them's your childhood memories f**kin' wit you! *SMACK*

Brilliant!

Seriously, the arcade version of SF II Hyper Fighting was always hard.

Not only that, somebody's f**in with me with the title of this thread! I was wondering where the Streetfighter thread disappeared to!

ps. the AI is super tough. or I just suck in my old age. Or maybe it's the Xbox controller... yeah, that's the ticket!

Well, erm, not really childhood. Sort of erm, well, childhood? Umm.. no, well.. sigh. This came out ta little late for childhood... so.. yeah.. that's about it right there. oh well... Besides, Mortal Kombat had blood... sigh.

Okay, I've been thinking about XBLA, and what it REALLY needs is a version of Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe. I don't know if anyone else played this game, but I've been looking for that action for a long time! They made it a GameBoy cart, but no GBA, as far as I know...

Anyone else waste a lot of time with this game??

Although it is nigh impossible to find these days, if you ever see an Xbox game called "Deathrow" give it a try, it's pretty much the spiritual successor to Speedball and runs great on 360 BC.

Co-signed! I looked for five minutes at least for people's reviews of SF2. I long to play other Goodjers online!

Sorry about that, I went on vacation so I changed the topic a bit early so I wouldn't forget to do it.

Here's the next list of upcoming arcade titles

should be really interesting

Arcade Wednesdays

Pac-Man August 9th
Namco's mascot returns for its 7th million port, now on Xbox 360. The D-Pad is apparently not upto scratch, but get the trial and see for yourself.

Texas Hold "˜em August 16th
Online or off, Texas Hold "˜em is a tough game of cards with 3 modes (standard game, tournament, and scenarios) and a tonne of variations.

Time Pilot August 23rd
Konami's 1982 arcade title sees you rescuing pilots from different eras of flight technology.

Scramble August 30th
Also from Konami, a side scrolling shoot em up (pictured)

Lumines Live! September 6th
From Q Entertainment, Lumines Live is a port of the PSP puzzler with 8 to 10 skins. More skins will be available as downloadable content and feature music artists.

Hmm.. Pac-Man, Time Pilot, Scramble, Lumines.. yep.. these too shall be bought. These would be, what, $5, $5, $5, $15 (respectively) or something? Time Pilot, man what a frustrating game control-wise. I hope they clean it up before launch.

Scramble... Gradius/Nemesis, anybody?

duuuude online texas hold'em with the goojers.... that should be fun

I'm excited for Texas Hold 'Em. That one's supposed to support the camera, right? Nothing puts players on tilt like mooning them after they lose a big pot.

I wonder if it is still going to be free. In a Major Nelson podcast about six months ago he interviewed one of the guys from the XBLA team, and at that time they planned to give it away as a "sponsored" game with some casino paying the bills.
