Saints Row The Third Catch-All

I have to admit that I don't run into many advertisements of any sort, since I don't watch the TV, listen to the radio, or buy magazines. So I may be a bit more laid back about this than most. I agree that truth in advertising is a very good thing. And I will admit that I will be more than a little miffed if

Spoiler:

BURT f*ckING REYNOLDS

is in DLC and not the main game.

In the UK, as I assume there are in the US and Canada, there are rules governing adverts; we have the Advertising Standards Authority. If an ad is misleading, or makes claims about a product it can't fulfil, then then ASA steps in.

What seems to be happening is that gamers are applying different sets of standards to judging trailers and other adverts for games, than they would for other types of products. Of course context is important, but ultimately an advert should be factually accurate, whether one has an interest in it or not.

If I cannot be sure that an advert is representing a product fairly, it is not hyperbolic to cancel an order and it's certainly not hyperbolic to call the company or adversitising campaign into question.

Again, it doesn't matter how interested I am in a product, the advert should be accurate. And, from a personal point of view, as someone who has worked in advertising, I think that greater honesty in adverts is something everyone should push for. Consumers will be better informed and ad agencies and their clients will have to push for better products to compete.

Any word on the GMG codes? No email, site update, or tweet. Hell, their site says the codes go out the 18th, days after the release. Supposedly, Amazon sent theirs out already.

In America, the rule is basically that ads can say anything at all so long as it isn't an explicit lie. Most business-friendly ad laws in the West.

Ours is a bit tougher than that, but not tough enough. Ruling on beauty ads with hair extensions, fake eye lashes and retouching.

Nothing, they told me it will be based on region, I did send them a private note about that. Nothing yet so far on my end.

I found his profile at http://steamcommunity.com/id/MoonDragon but I don't have the option to invite him to the group.

Edit #1:

Tron lightcycles!

Is there anything awesome that this game does not have?!

Edit #2:

Real-life, full-size dildo bat at the 3:30 mark. LAWL.

I think he received the invite already. I can't send him one.

Invite sent.

Two words about American advert laws: Smilin' Bob.

Yup. Got mine and registered it. Sadly, no TF2 items...

To be fair, it sounds like 1Dgaf has already had way more fun with SR3 than any of us.

Just finished the pre-load. Bring on Tuesday! Hopefully the decrypting will go faster, as I'm taking off work that day to enjoy a marathon of mayhem.

I can definitely see 1Dgaf's point, but for myself I find it hard to get riled up. I've been largely on blackout for SR3, so to me this reads like: "Hey! Awesome content you didn't know was going to be in the game is going to be in the game via DLC that you have to buy seperately." I guess I don't feel robbed because I don't feel like the content was ever "mine" to begin with.

I recognize this is hardly a universal condition.

This is one of those internet gray areas where law hasn't quite caught up with technology. The trailers aren't technically commercials, and they don't specifically say that the content is included on the disc. They may be letting people draw incorrect conclusions, but they're not technically lying because really all they're showing is gameplay footage. Unlike the car commercial analogy, they never specifically say that you get this for your $60. They just say it's possible to do this with Saints Row The Third. It's more like the SUV commercials that show people driving in places that the owner of the car will never go. You don't fault the car companies because you'll never, personally, take your Outback anywhere more exotic than Whole Foods, and nobody expects Subaru to include a plane ticket to Austrailia in the cost of the standard package.

A better comparison would be movie trailers-- I see lots of trailers for movies that have scenes that never appear in the movie. And most movie trailers make the movies look much more interesting than the movies actually are. There's a fine line between marketing and lying, if indeed there's a line at all. (How many places can actually have the "greatest value" on any given product, yet almost everyone makes that claim)

While I don't love that game developers take content out of their games to sell it via DLC after the fact, it's kind of the inevitable outcome of the digital distribution system. Delivering games and content via the intertubes incentivizes this kind of behavior, because there's really no reason for publishers not to monetize features that are easy to carve out of the game. Does it stink? Yes. But no fair calling foul when the monster you created threatens to crash your wedding.

That said, I have every confidence that the core game will be well worth my time whether I opt in to the DLC or not. But I agree with Hypathian about

Spoiler:

Burt Reynolds.

Somehow, I doubt that will happen. If it does, well I wasn't expecting it in the first place and so long as I can wear a silly outfit while wielding a rocket launcher, I'm happy.

If a trailer isn't a commercial, if it isn't there to advertise a product, what it's purpose? As to the car, if a person chooses not to take their jeep into the wild frontier, that's a consumer choice. But if the jeep was shown to have a sunroof and then didn't come with one, but the advertiser never specified it was an extra, then the consumer has been mislead. As for the film trailer, that's a interesting point. But how about thinking of game trailers as adverts for a set of tools - and if one of the tools is missing, how is the consumer supposed to react?

Games companies are old enough and big enough to do things properly; to avoid technicalities and weasel situations where they can say 'Well, we didn't SAY it was in the game, so it's your fault for assuming it was'.

But anyway, I'm clearly in the minority in this - which is disappointing in itself - so I'm not going to comment on it again.

Here is a question for you all, how are you buying the game? I had preordered both pc and 360 version, with pc on steam and 360 through newegg. Now I didn't think pre-ordering through newegg would be a problem, and they had a 10 or so off deal a month ago. The problem is they just told me that the game won't be "processed" to ship until release date. Meaning it could take 2-4 days after release date before I get the 360 version. Are any of you getting the physical version and if so through whom? I know Amazon almost always ships before release date so it arrives on release.

Sorry to disappoint, 1Dgaf.

Complex, I bought through GMG, which seems to be the only online retailer that hasn't sent out its keys yet.

If they don't send them soon tho, I might reconsider getting pre-orders from them again.. :S

I have never heard of them, took a while to get a google search to show them, since GMG seems to also be some entertainment thing and what not. Either way this GMG group seems to have nice deals for games, but how do they work? You said you have not got your keys yet but it is still a day or two away from release, do they email your keys to you before release? Do they not do a preload system like steam? Their website is pretty sparse on details, or I just dont know where to look.

True, still no word from them on the subject. A digital retailer. >_>

If I recall correctly they handed out the Deus Ex keys a bit late too, but still early enough to pre-load. So hopefully we'll get our keys on Monday?

Only a few more days until hilarity ensues.

I just saw 14 copies get checked into our backroom. I so desperately wanted to make it 13.

After a few people either bailed on me or did not bother to answer a simple question, I have to ask here one last time: Anyone from over the pond who would buy two copies of the game for me and a friend before tomorrow? I made some deals around here already (Interstate was my go to guy, but I don't want to bother him again and again) so I guess it would be fine if I handed you (Yes you, the reader!) my moneys via paypal or moneybookers or any other instant internet money portal that operates over here and then you could buy The Third Saints of the Row.

Pretty please? :3

EDIT: New group icon! Anyone with better GIMP/Photoshop skills? <.<

Can I please get an invite into the group? Steam

Took my business to Amazon. Done waiting on GMG and their lack of communication. Now I'm guaranteed to have the game ready on time. ^_^

One more day.

A couple of DLC packs have surfaced on Steam including the Season Pass, which appears to further validate the list that was leaked earlier.

Shark Attack Pack: http://store.steampowered.com/app/55... ($1.99)
Invincible Pack: http://store.steampowered.com/app/55... ($2.99)
Season Pass: http://store.steampowered.com/app/90... ($19.99)

Season Pass is the same as the one on the THQ site. Based on the price and the description I guess it only applies to content offering new missions?

I'm sold on the season pass. I don't mind throwing a lot of money at this game.
