40% of whites lying about their "black friend"

http://jezebel.com/forty-percent-of-...

According to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, 40% of white Americans have no non-white friends, and about 25% of non-white Americans have zero friends outside their own race. These numbers are disappointing, but not surprising to me. As a biracial kid in mostly white schools, I was the non-white friend.

That's a pretty misleading article title. 40% of whites don't have a black friend, they didn't look into whether any of them were lying about having one.

Yeah, really sh*tty spin to put on it tbh. That headline is just plain incorrect, let alone misleading.

Mind you, this is the site that just yesterday gave us the nutritional breakdown of semen.

Spoiler:

Without specifying the RDI

I think it's safe to say that any time a white person conjures up the phrase, "I have a black friend." they've already outed themselves as someone who is going to or already said something bigoted and that they don't actually have a black friend.

I would take it even further and say that if you were to actually ask their "Carls", they wouldn't call them their friends.

If you actually look at the data she's basing her article on, the question asked was if they have a close friend that's of a different race or ethnicity. Those 40% are not lying about it at all, they're flat out saying they don't.

I wish I had a black friend. I've been dying to say something racist!

I have a black friend at work that I chat with and one of the dudes from my D&D group is black. But I don't really have close friends either. I hang out with my wife, we do stuff together, I work, and I play video games. That's about it. Unless any black people here want to volunteer to be my black friend.

People tend to segregate themselves naturally. I figured this was just more jezebel fluff, like when they freaked out over Beyonce's new haircut.

One thing I have missed since I finished up college and settled into my daily life is the utter lack of diversity in the people I interact with. I grew up in southern Louisiana in a very integrated school district. My group of friends wasn't homogenous at all. In college, it was a bit more homogenous due to going to a small midwestern college, but even so I spent a lot of time with the international students and enjoyed sharing cultural differences and perspectives. But since then, I'm pretty much surrounded by a sea of blinding white. Which actually wouldn't bother me, except most of the people I deal with regularly are rather sheltered white folks who are completely ignorant of the realities of majority privilege.

I avoid political discussions with most of them, because I find their narrow perspectives very frustrating.

Yup. Luckily, the black people and gay managers at my job share my political views, so I can talk to them about that stuff.

That is exactly why I like living in the SF bay area in general. Don't get me wrong, people tend to isolate themselves within their neighborhoods and race but you really cannot escape the multiculturalism here.

It usually starts with food. We have great thai, mexican, italian, chinese, indian, mediterranian, ethiopian, etc. restaurants within 4 miles from where we live. They say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach but I that holds true for everyone.

Not that eating a variety of ethnic food will make you not racist but it is a good start. (unless you are Paula Deen... yes I went there)

This isn't one of those internet, you've only heard his voice on x-box things, right? Those don't count, I think.

Totally counts if he's the star of a make-believe reality TV show about the adventures of a crime-fighting gas station owner and his extremely busty sidekick, right?

Wait...does this mean that they will be asking about girlfriends in Niagra Falls next?

*shakes head* God, what sad, empty lives people must have, lying about something like that.

I'm so glad I've got you, Prederick.

Going from two cities with large communities of people from black or coloured ethnic backgrounds to a whole country with virtually none (almost all foreigners are white Europeans, including myself) I felt really weird. It was like all of a sudden only being surrounded by men named Pete who played golf...

I'm not the busty sidekick, am I?

If I had Vine, this is where I'd link a video of myself appearing as "CAPTAIN BLACKFRIEND".

I wonder if this study is across the board. Did 40% of my white friends lie about having me as a friend? Were they not my friends? Does 40% of me not exist?

Really, what i've learned from this is that I am going to start a for-profit business where I match up well-meaning white people looking for a black friend with at least one African-American. After a year, we'll expand into other minority groups. It's gonna be like ChristianMingle.com, except for miscegenation.

Once again, I must proclaim my undying love for you, Pred.

I had a black friend growing up. One of 3 black kids in my high school. His Dad was a immigrant from Barbados and a prison guard. He scared the crap out of me. Irrelevant story but I like talking about myself and showing how not racist I am.

An interesting by-product about being a foreigner in Japan is the people you end up being friends with. A typical night out was a Swede, an Aussie, an American, a Canadian, and a half-Indian Englishman. People from all parts of the world with many background becoming good friends.

Coming soon:

Really though, the "lying about their black friend" part is just made up crap for linkbait. The poll results were that ~40% of white people did not have a close friend that was of a different race or ethnicity than them. ~24% of non-white people didn't either.

60% did, though. Welcome to the Mid-Atlantic.

What a horrible link bait article.

Did that woman really compare Norwegians to blacks?

You're not thinking big enough. A black friend rental service for celebrities who say something racist while the mic is on, that's where the money's at!

It's funny, isn't it? Come to a country where 99 percent of the population is a single ethnicity and I have probably the most ethnically diverse group of friends since college. Love that "Meet a Black Guy" video. We should get a group of folks from all over and travel rural Japan!

America is not so much the Great Melting pot as the Great Graduated Cylinder of Fluids of Differing Densities.

However, as I like to remind people; America is not perfect on matters of race, but Spaniards throw bananas at black soccer players.
