I played on Yak's Bend during the last BWE and it was enjoyable. Several folks I know plan on rolling there. Plus, you know, Yaks. Yaks rule.
Are we definitely writing off the idea of an EU server? I see the advantages, but the objections make sense.
Northern Shiverpeaks seems to have a lot of oceanic and euro guilds that had the equivalent idea, but this way we get the same advantage(server with lots of timezone coverage) without the downside of potential lag.
and not being part of a major alliance isn't really an issue: they can handle the big sieges and defenses, we get to be a crack team focused on smaller tasks.
I'm planing on rolling Jade Quarry for home.
In that case I'll add my suggestion for a secondary server: Yak's Bend.

I played on Yak's Bend during the last two stress tests, and it was pretty miserable with all of the rubberbanding and lag. Yes, I realize that's what stress tests are designed to do -- but Yak's was showing as a High population both times.

I think all the server's are going to be high population no matter what. I logged on during BWE3 and every server was either high or maxed out. Another alternate is dragonsbrand, more WvW guilds. So I'm just going with my gut feeling, as Pex said, "Yak's Rule."
Hmmm....

“Yes, a guild can have members from any number of worlds. They will be making guild progress (e.g. upgrade and influence) towards their guild only the the world they’re playing in, though, so the influence isn’t shared between the different versions of the guilds in other home worlds. You will share a roster, and chat, and the normal social features with everyone regardless of their home world, though.”– Daniel Jennings
Not sure what to think yet. Maybe the poster is misinterpreting something.

It avoids situations that are likely to occur like... not being able to go into WvW because the server is full of people from a big alliance farming influence for their parent guild on another server. Dont know how likely that might be to occur, but I think it makes sense for now.

That makes sense. The poster seemed to be implying this was terrible for cross-server guilds.
However, Influence is accrued and spent separately by the guild members on each world. For example, a guild with Canadian players on Darkhaven, British players on Blacktide, and Berliners on Riverside will have three different pools of Influence and three different build queues.
So yes, the guild as represented on each server will have a separate Influence pool, and therefore a separate set of Guild rewards to build and use (e.g. guild bank, experience buffs, etc). Hmm... I wonder whether it would even be possible for a guildie on one server to jump to another server and take stuff from the guild bank on that server.
I've read that you can belong to multiple guilds and set one as the one you're currently representing. Someone told me though that you only gain guild influence when you're on your home server. Is that true? Seems like an odd decision to me.
I just found out about the per-server influence pools and upgrade tracks today and I don't really understand the logic behind it.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find many details, it seems like something the community has only found out about recently, but I agree that it does seem quite terrible for cross-server guilds.
I do think we need to bear in mind that the game has, AFAIK, unprecedented server flexibility. It can't all be perfect, but I think it makes sense at some level to represent your server as well as your guild. But with, initially, free server transfers this shouldn't have much consequence for the guilds.
At least the servers aren't locked down like most MMOs.
From latest Arenanet blot post:
At launch, players will be able to transfer between worlds freely. However, once server populations have largely settled and stabilized, world transfers will be restricted to once a week and cost a variable amount of gems based on the population of the world being transferred to.In time, we’ll also introduce free “guesting,” which will allow players to visit other worlds as guests as long as they have friends on those worlds. This feature will be free, but guest players will not be able to enter World vs. World, and the Power of the Mists bonuses from their home world will continue to apply to their characters.
Yeah, pity the guesting isn't in initially. I'll work on the assumption that it won't exist until the day they launch it. Less chance of disappointment.

According to the quote I posted up thread, the server guesting appear not to be in at launch, you can read the the whole blot post at the link Scrub provided.
The good news is that we really can't get the server choice wrong as they will allow free server transfers for a week at launch.
How does the multiple guild thing work (I understand you can only play WvWvW on your main server). Do you have different chats for your guilds, etc.?
You're still always active in only one guild at a time(the one you "represent"), but you can easily switch which one of your guilds that is without having to be re-invited each time.
My home server will be wherever my old SWOR/WOW/SWG/DAoC/Diablo guild ends up. I'd love to be able to roll with the GWJ crowd too though. Right now I'm trying to steer them to the same server, but the consensus is that Jade Quarry will be too crowded.
I think the GWJ community will be better served as a big fish in a smaller pond. That way we can really help set a positive tone for the server community.
I agree with you Vargen - I think that's a great analogy "big fish in a smaller pond."
I think I like the idea of a lower pop server as well. I did choose jade on the survey but that was before I understood how crowded it may be.
we should have a final choice deadline soon
Add me to "joining the GWJ" guild. I'll be on for the early launch once we nail down a server.
If you do not get on to Northern Shiverpeaks, just roll on an open world and use your free transfer to Northern Shiverpeaks when it is no longer full.
Sounds eminently sensible.
Northern Shiverpeaks is gaining in popularity on gw2guilds.org... Should we register our intent there too?
