Civilization V Catch-All

Oh dear, I just started playing again. MISTAKE!

I'm fretting over whether to get the DLC, even though I missed it on sale this summer. Any enablers here?

I'm going to give it until Christmas hoping for a "Complete" DLC pack or something. There has been quite a bit released it seems and I haven't bought any yet.

It'll be on sale again soon enough.

I haven't bought any DLC as it's just waaaaaay to expensive for what they are.

When are they actually going to give us a proper expansion pack with new units, techs, spying and all that cool stuff?

Well, I certainly like this change:

When the DLC business model fails.

<<-- almost never buys DLC, except in GOTY packages and Borderlands.

They're reasonably priced if you buy them on sales. The DLC includes scenarios, new units, new mechanics, new Civs, and new Wonders.

Plus, the patches have been very meaty. They've really come through on improving the core game free of charge (see for instance 3 posts above), even more than in Civ IV.

The diplomatic AI still sucks though. Civ V really needs a EU3-style diplo system, with infamy and casus belli.

I just started playing again as well. Couldn't help myself and downloaded all the new DLC. New wonders make me so happy! Caesar is still an ass, though.

Tsk tsk blue, clearly not defending the coastal cities.

An excellent idea. Please mod this in and let me know when it's ready.

It looks like when you invaded the other continent (blue's area) you had the option to return one of the blue cities to the city-state it had previously been. I've never come across that situation before. Was there any reputation gain with that city-state for resurrecting them like that?

Like, massive. Auto-allies and allies for some significant time after.

Ah cool, well worth doing then. Something like that should definitely give you BFF status

This is a new one...

Never mind that you're trying to win, but it's the plagiarism of it all that pisses them off? Ha

I'm currently playing a huge/marathon game with all nations enabled. I happen to have the largest military. So I am systematically responding with fire and genocide to everyone's denouncements of me. In the order in which they are received of course.

"Thank you for your denouncement of the Roman Empire. Your idiot opinion is important to us! Please continue to publicly decry us until a Roman Empire Customer Service Artillery Team can respond to you. We respond to denouncements in the order in which they are received, so please do not hang up and denounce again. Rest assured our artillery teams are processing issues as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience and your super constructive feedback."

Anyone following along but still on the sideline should take advantage of the Steam Weekend Sale and pick up Civ 5 for $12.50 (75% off).

In case folks missed it, RPS had a post about a Civ V mod that sounds pretty great: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011...

Gods, just finished remembering how to play on Prince and so I moved up. Accordingly, I random up the Romans on a contient map. I'm stuck with the Mongols and Darius I and to top it off, I am nowhere freaking near any iron. Guhhhhhhhhh......Guhhhhh..... Sometimes I dislike this game. I stuck with it, but without iron, Roman armies don't go. Hell, very few armies go. I didn't get hammered, but I was nowhere near winning this stupid scenario.

Spent about four hours playing the Civ Nights mod last night. It's really solid, with a lot of UI elements I would love to see adopted by the full game. The addition of cultural revolutions and the expansion of the tech tree make it feel like a completely different game, and there's definitely enough depth here to keep things interesting for quite a while.

Good to hear! I downloaded the mod and plan to start a new game with it today.

Probably a really dumb question, but you can still play multiplayer with this mod, correct? I guess I could look at it myself, but geez, why do I have to do all the work?

I'm enjoying my time with Civ Nights. It really has breathed some new life into the game. Somehow, the pacing of development feels more "natural". The choices that need to be made are more interesting and you have to make them more often. I can't wait to get into the mid and end game to see how it all plays out.

No mods in multiplayer. In fact, you still can't use any DLC in multiplayer. Multiplayer is still barely functional IMO.

I tried a "mandala" game today with Nights.
So much new content, so much new policy stuff, just so much.

I felt like I fell behind really fast, though. One AI was doing ICS, pooping out cities incredibly quickly, and more than half of them hit Classical while I was still working on sailing and archery and riding. Might have to go back to newbie school.

Still, I could see this replacing Civ5 completely.

That's pretty disappointing. I would not have thought it would have been difficult to implement multiplayer for a turn based game. Guess it's just not a priority.

Well, Pawz, Recon and I have had quite a few multiplayer matches. It's worked fine. Had it working locally and online. Only problem is if you have dlc, all people need to have it in order to use it.

Huh. I thought that DLC was still disabled for multiplayer. Thanks for pointing that out.

I love what I'm hearing about Civ Nights, but I've been looking for replays from the get! That's awesome!

Ooh, I'll have to give Civ Nights a try. I might be up for some multiplayer, but it's a bit finicky about requiring all players in order to resume an in-progress game.
