I want a mechanical keyboard

So here's the next big question: can I get away with sneaking a mechanical keyboard on to my wedding registry? :).

I don't know, did you set up a wedding registry at Best Buy?

Why didn't I do that....

Ah yes, that's perfect. Well if you don't do a registry, then you'll just get cash anyways... or I guess you could request gift cards

Wow, great info everyone. Right now I think that either Red or Brown switches are for me. I'm going to try and find someone who has either of the two so that I can try them out. My guess is that I'd prefer the tactile feel of the brown switches, but I just don't know.

Does anyone have any experience with the Vengeance K70 from Corsair?

That thing seems to have everything I want in a keyboard. Except macro keys, I've gotten used to binding .bat files and whatnot to my macro keys to fast open/close certain programs.

I agree with Shadout that the K95 looks like a good option if you want macro keys. I've had macro keys on my keyboards for the last 6 years and I've never used them. This time I decided that I could let them go :).

I've got one of the Corsair mechanical keyboards and liked it well enough. the MX Blue switches are really sensitive and quite, so if you don't like/want feedback, then they're a very solid and well made option IMO.

Haven't reached that stage yet.
Got macro keys on my Logitech G15, I've used them like 2 times in 6 years. Even so, I would prefer to have some macro keys on a new keyboard 'just in case' I want to make a macro that repeatedly tries to log into Diablo 3 on launch day a few hundred times, or something like that.

Quick dumb question: does anyone make wireless mechanical keyboards? I have a wireless logitech at home which I got so I can go from the desk to the couch (yay apartment living) in order to play games or put up a video or something. I'd like to try a mechanical keyboard but I'd like to retain the mobility of my current setup.

I used a K60 (the k70 is just the second revision) for a couple of weeks before returning it and upgrading to the K90 that I've been using for the past year. It has impressed me enough that just ordered a Corsair mouse yesterday just to give them a chance, and I'm considering replacing my keyboard with a K95 just to go all-in on the mechanical goodness. Now that it includes a full-width wrist-rest I can wholeheartedly endorse the K70 for all your non-macro keyboard needs.

Wow, I have been using my keyboard at work and I'm really wishing I had my mechanical keyboard.

It does really get to you after a while. It took me a couple of months before I had to pick up a Leopold to bring to work.

I have a CoolerMaster Storm Trigger, can't recall which keys (red maybe?). I chose that one largely for the backlighting, and it's been a great keyboard. At the time I got it for maybe $80 but it looks like the price has since gone up. For noise, you can install these o-rings, which help with the sound generated when the key bottoms out. Without them, even the keys without an explicit "click" go clackety clack if you press them all the way down.

I also wholeheartedly endorse WASD's o-rings if you're interested in keeping things quiet. I have them installed on both of my mechanicals.

Same, I bought another DAS pro silent (from Thin_J actually) for work after 3 months of having one at home.

Oh I'm definitely registered on Amazon :).

It's quiet because all the Corsair mechanical boards use Red switches, not Blues. Reds are linear, non-tactile, and much quieter than Blue switches.

They only *just* announced expanding the K70 line to include models with other color switches.

All K60/K90 and currently available 65/70/95 boards are red switches only.

Well, I just pulled the trigger on the K70. Thank you everyone who helped to enable me :).

If you can, buy one locally instead of online. Your location does say Denmark, so I would have no idea what stores you have locally... but if you buy somewhere that has a good return policy, you could try a keyboard out for a week. It's not something I would suggest doing all the time (buying to test out), but in this case, a mechanical keyboard is a relatively sizable investment, so you should be sure you want it if you are spending the money on it

Fascinating! That's pretty sweet that you can buy that kit. What did you think of the blacks? That's what I have in the Steelseries keyboard. I love 'em.

I agree with Shadout, I love the Browns (although I would probably love the Blue's even more despite the sound). The Brown's do have feedback of when they've been clicked, although it's a relatively subtle feedback.

I don't think I could enjoy a clicky keyboard. The blacks feel more like a typewriter for some reason. There's a lot of weight to the press of each key but no click. It's hard to describe, but I really like how they feel.

It's worth mentioning in this thread since it's been awhile. You can order Cherry MX switches if you have a key that goes out on a mechanical keyboard. They're very easy to replace as long as you own a soldering iron. Cherry MX switches are dirt cheap.

Do you like the K70? If you have got it, otherwise, when you do...

Ended up getting this kit, to test out mechanical keyboards.
I've been afraid they would be too loud for me to really like them, regardless of switch type, and it's really hard to get a sense of them in a shop.

Still not easy to get a good idea from these sample buttons, but it certainly showed that I want those dampening rings on. Damn they are all fairly loud otherwise. The Blue one just sounds like something you would want to kill after an hour
Both red and browns feels great, although very different from each other - more than I thought actually. The feedback on the brown feels really nice. You surely get a better sense that the choice of switches matters when you have them all right in your hand - even thought you can't exactly try to type/game on them sadly.

With rings on, the red sounds more quiet than my current keyboard which was surprising.
So I'm probably getting a K95 next week.

Still feels like an expensive gamble. Oh well.

So, I've played piano all my life and got spoiled by Steinways growing up. If you want to go even further than mechanical keyboard craziness, just start talking to pianists. There are two rad documentaries on Netflix here and here. I highly recommend watching them if you've gone down the mechanical keyboard route and enjoy the obsession. It's like the obsession with mechanical keyboards times 100.

I think I'm good with just the mechanical keyboard

Decided to skip the K95 and get this instead

I finally made it to a retail store that had different cherry switches in stock. After getting my hands on all of them I decided that browns would be the best bet for work. I previously test drove my blackwidow ultimate 2013 on my desk (after having installed o-rings) and while it was fine, I just wanted it to be a bit less audible.

Flash forward a week and this guy is on it's way to me. It's minty...

Although why would you buy a board without a D?

Never really use it anyways.
