You will also need to invest some crew points for your bomber's defensive gunners to be effective.

If you haven't found the crew points yet. Click on you vehicle crew slot and choose 'Crew', when you do this for your PBY you will see "Number of Gunners: 4" at the bottom right of the window that came up. Now change to the Gunners tab at the top, you will need to have a "Number of Experience Gunners" equal to that number at the bottom right or all of your gunners will be penalized.

Another thing of note for the Crew window. The Gunner's tab only effects AI gunners it has no affect whatsoever on your gunnery skill as a pilot.

Because of this I would recommend specializing your vehicle crew slots. The gunnery tab isn't important at all for fighters, but all of the skills in the Pilot tab are (well Keen Vision and Awareness aren't as useful as they used to be). The most important skill in the pilot tab for your bomber slot would be Vitality, the other skills can wait, focus more on your gunners skills. On the Ground Service tab the Reload Speed and Weapon Maintenance are key for both your fighters and bombers, especially if you only play arcade battles.

I've spent a bit of money on the game and have 6 vehicle slots available for each nation. I have 4 dedicated fighter slots which haven't had a single point spent on them in the Gunners tab. One dedicated bomber slot with maxed Pilot Vitality and a bunch of points into the Gunners skills (including 9 experienced gunners for my American bombers). My final slot bridges the gap as an attacker role that gives enough experienced gunners to crew a dive bomber, medium bomber or attacker but still has enough Pilot skills that I can slot a fighter in there if I need to.

A couple buddies and I pretty much play nightly we don't mind dropping down and flying lower tiered planes. Hit me up on Steam and I can pass on our teamspeak info if you want to group up.

I just trained up my 8th gunner on my American bomber crew. It cost 900 skill points.

Love the new patch for GF - light tank control is so much better...

The changes they made to the plane flyouts have been working good. Instead of always-impact fusing the stuff you drop has a variable time fuse. It will detonate on impact if it has been falling for 10 seconds or more. If it his the ground before that it will detonate after 10 seconds. This is supposed to be closer to what ground attack planes actually used in real life. What this means for tank players is that you have a chance to get out of the way now and moving targets are almost impossible to hit. Kamikazi-ing into the ground only increases the length of the fuse.

The event going on right now for Pokryshkin’s P39N-0 is pretty decent. I got 3 days of free premium off the first challenge, and it only took a few hours to grind the plane out. Total you need 90 player kills, but for the second you need 10 matches where you get at least one teamwork award, and after that you need three matches where you and your teammate get the Best Squad award.

I just loaded up my low tier US planes and went seal clubbing. I figured if I only clubbed near my teammate, that should do it. And it worked out pretty well. I just unlocked the plane, not sure if it's any good, but I like having a few days of premium to play with at least.

It's an airacobra with the wing guns removed so that it's a bit lighter and turns better. Nothing amazing really.

I got the 90 kills easily enough, but I still have 0 Best Squad awards because crap like this keeps happening.

Flew the new P-39 last night. Seems slightly more agile, but less dangerous without the wing armament. It doesn't help that it's already paper-thin on armor with nothing protecting the pilot, so a violent fart in that plane's direction will cause a pilot knockout or a wing to snap off.

3/10, will likely retire plane without much play.

I know that feeling. I managed to channel my rage and get through it though.

My problem was getting those teamwork awards. In order to get one you have to be nearby when your squadmate get a kill and well, this about sums up the quality of teammate I was getting for the past 2 days. Note that we lost, I can only carry the team so far.

I got two best squads and that was worse than having none, because I stayed up until 2am chasing, (and failing to get), the third. For a plane I'll probably never use.

That's pretty funny. I remember the days when i played this with Tamren a lot and it was fun to see which of us would get the top spot in the match:) Cause it was gonna be one of us! And top squad was never in doubt.

It's more a question of how many pages of the thread could tamren fill if he had a screenshot of every match that went as well for him as the one above:)

I've been retrying warthunder some the last several days and finding more frustration as i try high end prop planes in the USA tree again. Constantly matched against planes a BR above me, including many jets if i dare slot in a 6.0 BR prop plane like a B17G.

I've not reached a target to bomb with a B17 or B24 in the last dozen matches i tried bombers. It just feels unplayable for me.

I'm guessing you guys have just learned to live purely in the mid tiers or what at this point? I remember the days of bein able to do so good and at this higher tier the game punishes me so hard i can barely do anything. Level up a new 6.3 BR fighter when you're fighting maxed out Jets? Yer so funny....

I'll have to jump back on GWJ TS and see if i can get some good ole group action in the mid or lower tiers with you folks.

According to my Steam gallery I have 8 screenshots of me getting 20 or more kills in a match, and one screenshot of 15.

I've been playing a ton of Homeworld, MWO and Elite these past couple months. I switch games depending on which one has special events going on and such. Right now I'm going to go back to Elite for a while to check out the new patch but I still hop on my low tiers in WT every now and then. I'm also working on my US tank tree.

Ground Forces

In Arcade Battles - The effect of critical damage has been changed:
Damage to the gun barrel no longer removes the ability to shoot, but increases the cannon’s spread and reduces the muzzle velocity and thus penetration value of its shells.
Damage to the breech may cause a misfire, resulting in no shot to be fired. The probability of a misfire and the resulting wait time depends on the rate of fire and caliber of the cannon.
Damage to the horizontal turret drive (traverse) now temporary stops turret rotation. After expiration of a timer, you will be able to rotate the turret again, but at a reduced speed of 2 degrees per second.
Damage to the vertical gun drive (elevation) will result in the weapon being locked in the position it held when it was damaged, but it will still be possible to elevate the gun by +/- 1 degree.

Tank gripes to follow, but I do realize that I've only been playing the arcade battles:

I love the damage models in the game but I kind of hate the road handling of the tanks. I should not be able to "spin out" with a tank.

Also, why can a AAA vehicle with .50 cal machine guns damage a tank? I get that from a gameplay perspective you need the AAA to be able to do more than shoot planes but it is a bit ridiculous.

How are the more realistic and simulator modes?

It's not as hard as it sounds, get a lot of weight moving in one direction and it doesn't like to stop. Most of the vehicle handling is still pretty beta though, particularly the newly added vehicles.

.50cals are quite powerful weapons. The shortbarreled AN/M2 version mounted on US planes can punch through about 15-20mm of steel using AP ammo. The version used in ground forces is the M2HB with the long barrel and it can pierce just under 30mm of armour at short range, and 25mm out to a couple hundred metres.

Most early tanks in the game have very poor armour and even those that can muster 30-50mm rarely have all round protection. And of course some vehicles aren't tanks at all and barely have enough metal to stop shrapnel. In general you need 10mm to be immune to small machineguns like 7.62mm, 30mm to be immune to heavy machineguns.

Once you get into tier 2 even 30mm of unsloped armour is basically "nothing" because all the weapons you come across have no trouble defeating it.

For tanks? Realistic tanks used to be exactly the same as arcade, just without the shot indicator, they changed the damage mechanics a little in the last patch for arcade.

Full simulator is just that, no HUD, no player markers, no optical aids beyond the gunsight and your commander's binoculars. In sim you also don't get to use the 3rd person camera, you are locked to the viewpoint where your commander would normally sit.

So the new War Thunder Ground Forces unit is fun.

Some heavy MG, a couple 57mm and then the KV2's 152mm derp gun.

Tie a couple logs between some trees to smash it with and you can take them down in one shot.

It's actually impressive how well they did this mech. They should make MechThunder.

The Mech combat in WT may be better than the Mech combat in MW:O.

Agreed. I couldn't stick with MW:O. This... just feels awesome.

I tried the events, both are funny but not especially fun. The inclusion of air units in the mech game means that in the latter half of the match you can't drive 10 feet before being instantly killed by an IL-2 or Havoc. That or your team has the other team locked down from the air and you have nothing to fight.

One area where they did a great job was the mech walking animations. Every time the mech puts it's foot down it makes a satisfying THOOMP THOOMP sound. The foot stays where it is until the mech picks it up again, totally unlike MWO where mech animation barely sync to terrain at all.

To quality you need to amass 150 player kills in Arcade and less in other modes.

The Boomerang is a pretty good plane of Aussie make. It's a little over-tiered though.

Most of the stuff from the daily login bonus I tend to just let expire, or toss it in on a random battle. However, I started the Thunderer wager last night and I've been pretty happy with how they did it. To complete it, you start off by tossing 10k lions in the pot, and you keep going until you fail. Given that the mission is just to destroy more ground units than anyone else, it's pretty easy to just load up a full lineup of bombers and kamikaze on them a few times. Right now I'm running a B-25, P-47 (rockets/bombs), F6F (rockets/bombs), A-20, P-51 (rockets), and the TBF. Swoop down, drop bombs on tanks, rocket AAA and armored cars, profit. I'm up to rank 4 on the wager so far, haven't failed one yet. Doing this 10 times for 500k lions doesn't seem too bad a deal right now.

The wagers definitely mix up the gameplay a lot and give you something to do with maxed planes. Silver isn't really an issue for me though, I've got almost 30 million gathering dust in the bank and it's been a very long time since I last ran out.

I have a couple of golden battle wagers too. They don't cost anything to activate but you can earn anywhere from 50 to 1000 gold eagles. The 1000 requires you to win 20 times in a row, failing up to 3 games in between.

Had a funny moment a couple nights ago while squadding up with Redhawk and his friends.
