Medical quackery in the US upsets me very, very much

Sure am!

Was at the pharmacy this morning and the pharmacist at the next counter was trying to convince this elderly couple they needed both of the antibiotics the doctor had prescribed and that the horde of homeopathy this other doctor had prescribed just wouldn't cut it. I don't understand why homeopathy is still reimbursed by our healthcare system. Only 40%, the rest is out of pocket, but it still drives me up the wall.

My fiance is a pharmacist and she tells me stories like that all the time. It frustrates her to no end.

On a tangent - she also tells me stories of doctors prescribing multiple drugs that together would probably kill the patient. Apparently the primary job of a pharmacist is to prevent doctors from making horrible mistakes. I really had no idea how much knowledge and schooling pharmacists have - it's really quite impressive! (I didn't know that they had doctorates either, but it's pretty cool that I can make reservations for "Doctor and Mister Soandso" )

Yeah, I have been supporting the pharmacy's computer system at my hospital and it has been eye-opening to realize how important their role is in providing dosing, susbstitutions, and therapy recommendations to the physicians. It makes sense though; doctors need to keep up on new medical knowledge and that alone is a huge job; keeping track of all the changes in the pharmaceutical world is a fulltime job in and of itself.

Amazing secrets of essential oils!

Funny video, Nomad. Thank you for the link

Nomad, my wife has gotten into EO. And let me say...

Thank you.

Indeed, that was awesome.

I have occasionally put lavender drops on pillows because it smells good. I don't believe any of the woo though.

Yeah, my mom's gotten into EOs lately along with crystals... but then she still goes and sees a regular doctor... regularly... so, I just don't bother worrying about it. The house smells less like dog when she's got the stuff going (though one smells like patchouli is getting a little irritating both because I don't like the smell and it's one my ex MiL used to like, so it mostly invokes memories of my ex MiL coming over and stressing everyone out with her anxiety issues).

My wife has friends that have tried to get her into the woo side of it, and tried to recruit her into some sort of pyramid scheme involving selling them. Didn't work though, she just like the smells.

I will say that my obligatory EO-hawking friend on Facebook is far, far less obnoxious than the one who's gone apesh*t over her home business of selling "It Works" body wraps (and which is now branching into herbal crap), which are the biggest load of crap I've seen since Jurassic Park.

I'm still confused by "processed foods". What the hell does that even mean? All foods are processed unless you're literally eating everything raw. You're eating cooked meat? You've processed it, that's a processed food now.

I keep hearing that as some kind of bogeyman and don't get what it's even supposed to mean, if anything, at this point.

It's the opposite of "natural", you Monsanto shill.

Spoiler:

How do you determine the opposite of a nebulous, meaningless word?

Processed clearly means not natural (and are probably full of toxins too), and we all know that if everyone just ate only natural foods no one would ever get sick.

Much like GMO. All of our farmed food are GMO and have been for millennia.

I only eat raw unwashed food I dig out of the ground myself. The dirt helps my immune system and prevents cancer.

Hello, fellow Urban Forager!

Processing is when they add all the chemicals. I only eat unprocessed foods without any chemicals in them: electromagnetic radiation, neutrinos, dark matter, etc.
Actually I should stop eating dark matter there might be some sneaky non-baryonic chemicals hiding in there.

I'm on an all boson diet right now. Not Higgs bosons though. Too heavy.

Totally thought that said bosom at first and was like, no way would Yellek put up with that.

She makes an exception for the Higgs. It's the only way Q-Stone can get even the slightest gravitas.

That reminds, me, Nomad, you still owe me for the last set of coolers filled with Doritos, Cheetos and Totino's I buried for you at that scout camp. What's up with that, anyway?

Everybody needs a bosom for a pillow. Everybody needs a bosom.

Uh, no they don't.

I told you I am not taking those aromatherapy candles back. That was the payment we agreed on, and rectal use voids any possible refund.

Quoting because O.o daaayum.

What, you've never heard of butt candling? It draws all the toxins out.
