Playstation 4

Well done, Sony.

There was a bar graph of all consoles first week that someone retweeted. The second highest launch was the GBA, which surprised me a good deal. As a kid, I had no idea how popular that really was.

Huh. *scratches head*

Huh what? Too high? Too low?

Turns out the Wii U sold 400,000 in its first week and 425,000 for the month of November (2012).

To add more perspective:

According to the NPD Group, nearly 890,000 Nintendo Wii U units were sold in the United States after 41 days on the market.

Yeah. The head scratch for me is that I literally thought the gross US sales for the Wii U were still under a million units.

I just read some folks saying that if you take your PBLOD console and *receipt* to a Sony store they will give you a replacement. I believe the accounts because of the source, but does that mean all Sony stores are just sitting on a bunch of spare consoles that aren't yet for sale?

Curious to see if the not insignificant number of people in the press who have been preaching the "tablets will/are already kill/ing consoles" line will eat any crow this week or if they'll just pretend they never said anything. I think I know the answer but we'll see.

Installing Contrast now before I start playing Killzone.

Set up my new PSN ID so that it's not my ex-wife's anymore (not that she's thinking about getting a new console, but mostly because I wanted something of my own choosing).

My thought is that those folks will do neither; they'll spin it to look good somehow.

Oh nice, you got one! Have fun with Contrast. It's short and sweet.

A quick note from when I first set my console up. If the fan is running very high and loud, check if you have it in an entertainment center cubby. I had mine in a fairly open cubby that ran my xbox 360 fine, but the fan on the PS4 was on high. I felt in the cubby and the heat that was being thrown off and accumulating was impressive. After placing it more in the open, the fan would only fire up for a couple minutes during heavy lifting points and then quickly calm down.

Yeah, that website I posted upthread helped with a 20 minute window where Amazon had them up again.

Amusingly, I then shipped it to my soon-to-be ex-wife's house.

Luckily, we're on good terms, she brought it to me today along with the first round of papers we have to submit for our dissolution.

The real question is how many consoles will Sony and Microsoft sell over the lifespan of these devices, not how many they sell this month. Selling 2 million units this year, and 20 million over the next four years, will mean bad news for console gaming.

I wonder if since you can't capture with an external capture device on the PS4 due to the HDCP encryption, that Sony intended their built in stream and capture was all they were going to allow...until MS said they were sending out unencrypted HDMI from games? Now they're saying a system update will remove this DRM'd streaming limit.

This cycle is shaping up to be a big back-and-forth competitive environment. It's kind if nice to see both sides being so responsive. There are down sides, but overall, the good stuff from one side will likely end up on the other side eventually. At least we hope.

Unboxed my PS4 today. Hooked it up, updated, etc.

I like the UI for the most part, though I would like to rearrange / reorder tiles in the TV & Video menu. So far, I've not found a way to do that.

I was surprised to see that the included coupons (free month of +, video service, and $10 PSN code) expire in March of 2014. Granted, I imagine most consoles sold at this stage would be opened within 6 weeks. On the other hand, I would have been annoyed had I opened it in April of next year and discovered the bonus extras were no longer useful!

So, people think it's worth it to activate Plus now and get Nov. / Dec.'s games for free? Or wait until next month and get Dec. / Jan.'s?

Resogun looks like a nicely modernized Defender. I am uncertain as to how Contrast plays.

How many they sell this month absolutely matters. It feeds into general hype for the system, not to mention boosts investor/consumer confidence for the device and of course company success. Selling 1 million on day 1 is a strong indicator that the system is going to see high demand. It's not a guarantee of long term success, but you can't just blow off how many units they sold in 1 day as not being important.

I couldn't find a way. I'm sure they'll update that eventually. They at least should let you sort your installed apps to the top.

Updated my Playstation, downloaded and installed my games... spending the night in the basement due to tornado warnings. Lame!

I was surprised they were so high. I remembered (in general) numbers like these: 1.75 million units shipped in the US, total, by Sept 30, 2013. That's all-time bad. I didn't realize they had sold that well at first.

I was bummed to see that I could not add the free month of plus to my existing membership. It told me I could not redeem that code.

I got 7 day free trial cards for PS+ with my games, which I plan on using by one until they run out, then paying for a year.

How is the PS4 for kids? Talking 8 and 10 year old girls here. They used to have an xbox360. But flooding killed it and insurance company
should be locked behind bars. Meanwhile no console. They still have the games though. Not seeing any cheap 360-s at the moment.
So maybe switching to PS4 is an option. Depending on how kid friendly the games are that are out now.

Word got out pretty quickly that the console was seriously hurting for games to play that you couldn't already play on another system. I'm curious to see if the PS4 and Xbox One follow a similar trajectory for similar reasons.

I think there's only one "family" game for either next-gen console so far: Lego Marvel. Any others I'm missing? Is Knack?

Honestly, the Wii U is the console you ought to get for kids. If $$$ and games for 8-10 year-olds is your priority, it's a pretty easy decision.

Or two 2DSs.

It's also a kind of interesting data point which backs up Sony's claims of being prepared to meet demand in retail channels. 1M is a pretty big success just from a logistical standpoint. It will be interesting to see if MS can meet demand as well.

My take: with the two launches so close together, and with Sony's initial numbers looking so strong, both players will need to keep making stock generally available (rather than pulling a Wii and being perma-sold-out with a slow trickle available to buy). They just can't risk an out-of-stock situation giving the other console an initial lead.

Mother Load has up to 4 couch multiplayer. Family mining fun!

Thanks for the info guys on kids PS4 games. Don't want to derail the thread too much

Between Sony and MS, in the aims of their marketing in the lead-up to release, I'd say MS was definitely more interested in positioning itself as family friendly, primarily by way of Kinect. In the day-to-day, most kid-friendly gaming is probably going to be multi-platform release or hardware-specific (I'm thinking 3DS games, but Kinect could fit in there too).

I haven't seen anything coming out soon for PS4 that I'd recommend for young girls, but that doesn't mean a whole lot.

Reviews I've seen of Knack so far say it's 1) horrible and 2) not even really for kids due to its difficulty level and frustrating design.

So... there's that.
