Playstation 4

My PlayStation 3 was basically used as a blu-ray player this generation, but I have given the system a second look, thanks to Dark Souls and I am starting to really like what I see. I am very excited to see what they roll out this generation and I really want them to bring a product that will foster this new found love I have for the console.

I'm also interested. Although the XBox has been my console of choice this generation, I feel like the next gen is up for grabs, and I'll switch to whatever system is best.

I'm a junkie. I'm interested in all the systems.

As long as they keep bringing the quirky Japanese stuff that Nintendo doesn't want, I'm game. Oh and a reasonable price would be good this time around.

The problem for me this time around was "quirky Japanese stuff" didn't extend to shmups, which all ended up region-locked on the 360 instead.

Also, can we get rid of region-locking now?

I have a group of friends that I play coop stuff with on PS3, so if the migration happens, we'll probably go at roughly the same time. Which is highly unlikely to be at launch, but you never know.

PS3 had the least region locking of the 3 consoles so I really appreciated that. The problem that the PS4 will run into is that they are likely to change architectures from the PS3 which will make backwards compatibility very difficult if not impossible. I gather this is one of the reasons they purchased Gaikai but I think I will always prefer to play my games locally where possible.

PS3 was definitely my go-to console of this cycle; my XBox is pretty much only a kinect dancing game box, and I only played Wii at other people's houses. I love what Sony's done with their console exclusives, so I hope the PS4'll stay strongly competitive.

I think the PSN as a game delivery system is a pretty good infrastructure to carry into the next cycle; they'll have to improve to match, or surpass Steam/XBox Live as a game matching system, though.

Trying to fight that, myself...

This is just about my situation, but I'd actually prefer if Sony really came out strong and kept me away from MS's new box. MS has really lost a step in terms of first party exclusives, XBL Gold's fee is starting to grate on me (I've now spent as much on that as the console itself), the 360 Dashboard is really terrible about the advertising, and my two favorite Xbox exclusives have run upon hard times. I didn't like Gears 3, I don't think it's a good sign that the next one has been shuffled off to People Can Fly (hated Bulletstorm), and I'm not sure we'll see another traditional Fable game. Plus Molyneux is gone.

Barring some massive disparity in game releases (I doubt it) I'll run to whichever system has the better controller. Everything else is worthless if I hate how I interact with the thing.

History implies heavily that will be the new Xbox, but we'll see.

At the end of the day I just want something I can afford!

Played both the 360 and PS3 to death so I have no preference when it comes to either console and online just doesn't interest me so maybe PS3 is a smidgen better for my needs there because I can get stuff when I want to for no cost (e.g. Dragon's Dogma Pawns, etc.).

Tokyo Jungle 2: Tokyo Jungler, please.

I wonder if it will be capable of 4K output. 3D was not something I wanted, but the ability to run super high resolution games and movies would be awesome.

They could definitely get rid of installs and make everything background downloadable.

I think 4K won't be a concern this generation. Next generation most definitely.

I think you are right considering most current PC graphics cards struggle at 1080p on the highest settings with graphics heavy games. I'll be happy if its a requirement that all next gen console games run at 1080p.

In which we find the game has become a MOBA, replacing the overused 3-lane forested river with an overgrown future Tokyo.

"gg ostrich never ganks"

As with the current gen, I had little to no interest in MS or Sony consoles. The exclusives have some draw (on the PS3 way more, but still not a much), and the rest can typically be found on the PC. I still picked up a PS3 in November of 2010, and do find a lot of enjoyment from it. But my experiences since I bought it have led me to believe I can live without the next one. That's even with jumping on PS+ last month.

If I ever pick up one the new consoles it'll be when it hits $200 or less, which will likely be like 2017. I'll be picking up a WiiU as soon as I can afford it, though.

Given Nintendo's very open and embracing stance to indie developers with the WiiU, little quirky titles are likely to flock to the WiiU if the market will support it. The devs of Trine2 have nothing but praise for their experiences plus Nintendo is allowing the dev to choose pricing and special sale dates / pricing.

Also, Sony had better fix that controller by tossing it out the window and giving us a proper modern ergonomic design that doesn't demand my decidedly average hand size be held awkwardly (but not cramp inducing) to use the sticks and shoulder buttons / triggers. Even MS needs to fix their controller to allow placement of a finger on each of those buttons, IMO. I don't want to shift between R1/R2 or be really uncomfortable holding the controller to get my fingers over both. With about 30 mins with the WiiU gamepad, I kinda feel they got close to what I'm looking for.

/Nintendo fanboy posting in a thread about another console

I'm one of the few who have no problem with neither the Sony nor the MS controllers as-is. I just have perfect hands, I guess.

I'm in the minority in that I've only purchased Sony consoles, so I'll probably continue doing so for the next generation. For me, it's all about the software and the fact that I don't want multiple consoles. I've found that the exclusives on PS3 have rewarded my loyalty, and 2013 is looking great.

Call of Duty was a big factor for me. Online Deathmatch shooters pulled me to the Xbox. Those sort of games do not interest as much, so the single player games on the PS3 are drawing me in. I an hoping for some great single player adventures, with online features similar to Journey and the Souls franchise.

Tokyo Jungle 2: We added cyber animals too!

I think I want a few things from the next sequel of consoles. I want the ability to play my console games on the go (IE stream/gakai). I hope that it is more service based than just a box too.

I'm interested to see what hardware they're gonna pack into the PS4, and I'll be interested in the developer comments on the hardware, because they are the ones that matter.
I think though I'll be getting the Xbox - unless it's far out done by Sony's console as all my friends that have consoles are pretty much decided on the Xbox too, and it's no fun playing multi-player games without your mates.

I'm pretty down on the PS3 overall this generation. Count me as one of those folks who hates the controller. (I had a brilliant Logitchech wireless controller for my PS2 back in the day.) I'm also not very into Japanese-style games and there were very few exclusives that I played on it. I justified the purchase at the time because it would double as a Blu-Ray player. I've watched exactly two Blu-Ray movies on it so far.

Nowadays as far as just gaming is concerned, I'm about 90% PC, 9% XBox, 1% PS3, and 0% Wii. The Xbox gets used all the time though as a media player. The kids are older now and have shown no interest - so the Wii U is a pass for now. I'm kinda feeling the same way about the PS4. It'll probably be very expensive, with few games at release. It'll have to be something really special vs the new XBox for me to consider it.

Just my $0.02.

I can say I have never really been big on early adoption of consoles but having enjoyed my wife's PS3... I suspect we'll be going PS4 with next gen.

I don't hate the PS(1/2/3) controller. But seeing as how I found it just adequate when it was released on the PS1, it really needs a replacement, not just an update.

I am the same way and will lean towards the PS4. I am also apparently in the minority that likes the PS controller. I get cramps from the XBox controller.

That being said, other than maybe increasing the download speeds...not sure what else I really need from a PS4. It already looks pretty and I find the online multiplayer works for me (I don't play a lot). More games?

I think they were saying on the GWJ Bold Predictions Podcast that the Xbox controller is the best out there - I agree, but I do think it's what your used to. I never like the N64 or GameCube controllers, and I don't mind the PlayStation ones but the Xbox one is most comfortable. But if you've only really used the PlayStation controller for most of your console gaming, then that's what'll feel right and be best for you. Like most things - it's personal preference.

Agreed. I'm not buying the PS4 solely for the controller anyway.

No, obviously not, that's the least of the considerations. I hope they announce the consoles at least 6 months before release so we get a good chance to see what's coming out at launch and shortly after so we can evaluate what's best to pick up. I have the feeling that it's gonna be a flood of info at E3 followed shortly by the release - but we'll have to wait and see.

I had no interest in the PS3 when it launched, but it has since become my favorite system. What I hope most of all for a PS4 launch is that it is a good launch, and not a broken one.
