World of Warships

I've come to the conclusion that cruisers are what I should be driving. After struggling all night I finally shelved my BBs and switched to my dinky little Phoenix. I promply aced my next game. Cruisers, or at least the US ones seem to be good at everything. They can attack all surface targets effectively and have AA that isn't totally useless.

Battleship and destroyer gameplay has it's moments but overall it's just boring and frustrating. BB accuracy is sh*t, even at what feels like point blank range, and the long reload times give you time to sit and think about how much you hate life. US destroyers don't get torpedoes that exceed their detection range until tier 7, and it's a long slog up the tree.

The first two special missions are 30 destroyer and cruiser kills. Does anyone who has completed the event remember what the later 4 missions are about?

Doing better in my cruisers. I pushed my way up to getting a Kongo, and while it's an improvement over the Myogi the game still insists on putting me in tier 7 games.

Everything below is IMO and is mostly about "fun factor", which is obviously subjective.

BBs don't really come into their own until fully upgraded tier 5 (Kongo/New York) but tier 6 is when they really start to shine. I really hated BBs and wanted to drop them until then, now I love them.

Cruisers, OTOH, in my opinion peak at tier 6 and get kind of sucky later on.

Japanese cruisers peak at 8.

US cruisers definitely peak at Tier 10 though. Nothing can match the Des Moines and it's 6 second reload speed.

Going from the German T2 to T3 cruiser (or was it T3 to T4...) whichever. It goes from a <5 sec reload time to much much longer. It has taken me a long time to get used to that. My shots actually matter.

I'm going to start working on German cruisers soon. I hear they have very accurate guns.

I think the same thing happens to IJN cruisers as well. Going from T4 (Kuma) to T5 (Furutaka), you go from like 10 shots/min to 2.5 shots/min. The catch is you go up in caliber (200+ from 155) two levels before US cruisers. But it takes some getting used to.

The Myogi has a jump like that too. You jump from 12 inch to 14 inch and you can shoot at 18km, or 21km with the spotter plane up. What drags it down is that you only have the three guns and your chances of hitting at 21km are slim to none.

What makes it all worth it is the look on a carriers face when he is 21km away behind an island and you nail him with a salvo anyway.

6 seconds reload might be nice but there are issues at tier 10 that prevent me from saying US cruisers peak at tier 10. IMO up to (and including) tier 6 they playing them is much more fun.

Then again, maybe it's just me, I just don't like the gameplay on higher tiers, 8+.

Recently started playing again and have almost got to tier 5 in cruisers for the Americans. Looking for people who play at night I usually hope on around 9-10 central time after the wife has gone to bed.

Wow these ship models are pretty detailed!

I also play evenings, we should squad up sometime. Do you have a steam ID? That would be the easiest way to link up.

I just started today. Pretty fun. I had fin in the airplane one also until I got to a tier where it was imopssinle to take down a higher tier plane. This game seems to be easier to cooperate so hopefully I won't hit that wall. I think I'm going to go the American torpedo route although the first battle I had a friendly turn right into my full spread

Trying to level up my german cruisers and stalled HARD on the Kolberg. This thing is just sh*t! sh*t armour, sh*t guns, sh*t range. It like playing a fat destroyer without torpedoes, it doesn't do anything well at all, and from the look of things the Karlsruhe isn't any better.

Supposedly german AP shells are amazing but I haven't gotten a single citadel hit in three tiers of play, and not for lack of trying.

Yeah the South Carolina is horrible. Slow, guns hardly track and inaccurate as hell.

I've seen people say Karlsruhe is one of the worst ships in the game. Just saying. The good news is that all ships after it are great. Or so I hear, since I don't play German ships.

By some miracle I managed to have a good game in my Karlsruhe. The stars aligned and actually put me in a tier 4 game for once, after a string of tier 6 games where I made less than 100 xp. I shot down one destroyer after disabling it's engine. Won a gunnery duel with another Karlsruhe. Torpedoed a Wyoming at point blank range and then managed to torpedo a destroyer with a bare sliver of health left.

Tier 4 is when you upgrade from 4-inch guns to 6 inch guns and it makes a big difference. You can reliably citadel other cruisers and deal full AP damage at long range. The torpedoes also help on occasion because destroyers that get in close but fail to knife you on the first shot tend to forget you have them and blunder right into yours.

What overshadows all this is the lack of guns and sh*tty range. Your broadside is a mere 5 guns and they only reach out to 11km. I cannot wait until I get to dump it.

Nice fight! It's fights like this that make us keep going!

I'd have to agree. The only good thing about using this ship is getting through it to the Königsberg, which I think is the best Tier 5 Cruiser. The AP penetration means any game you get match up with similiar tier or lower, you'll chew them up with lots of citadel hits, good rate of fire, and good range. The 5km torps are a nice bonus, but it's really the AP side of the guns that shines. I've hung onto my fully upgraded Königsberg to play ranked matches here and there. The Tier 6 Nürnberg is also excellent. Just need to slug your way through the crappy Karlsruhe.

Cleveland SMASH.

Good one!

How is the game after the big patch? At least I heard it was big. I am not playing atm but I am still curious about the game.

It changed the commander skills up quite a bit, and it seems to have changed CVs as well (my Langley has dive bombers now). I haven't noticed anything (gameplay-wise) that the patch has broken.

There is a new skill that increases torpedo speed by 5 knots at the expense of 20% of the range. For me, playing a lot of tier 5/6 IJN destroyers, this is a game-changer. If you're facing me, you'd better have that skill that increases your torpedo detection range! There are some skills that buff some aspects of ship AA. There are also some high-tier commander skills that change how secondary fire works, which I expect could make a big difference on higher-tier battleships.

Couldn't agree more. I've just started grinding through the Karlsruhe and it's terrible. It's even worse than the Kolberg because the ships that matchmaking puts you up against seem to completely outclass you in range and firepower. And the arc on the shells fired by the Karlsruhe is very hard to work with. The only luck I've had is in close-range destroyer hunting, and very careful battleship burning, and even these are pretty tricky as it's not the most maneuverable ship either. Maybe this is what I've been saving all of that free XP for...

I just leveled out of the SC so I understand your plight.

Yeah, I definitely sold the South Carolina the moment I unlocked the Wyoming.

After the patch reset all my captain skills I picked up the -10% repair recharge skill on my cruiser captain. I kind if wish I had gotten torpedo detection instead because my currently problem is torpedoes. Destroyers have the agility to dodge torpedoes. Battleships DON'T have the agility to dodge torpedoes even if they could see them. But cruisers sit on the middle ground where torpedoes are dangerous because you can't avoid them all and you don't have much health.

The biggest bane to my Cleveland is japanese cruisers because I forget they have torpedoes and at tier 6 they can start shooting out to 10km. And I'm not simply driving in straight lines either. What tends to happen is that I account for torpedoes in my movements like I would with destroyers at close range. But then blunder into them anyway because they were fired what feels like 10 minutes ago and they have such a delayed time to target.

Well I finally got my Konigsberg and on my very first game with it a Kongo killed me in a single shot. Didn't even hit the magazine. Evidently every single german cruiser is made of glass and have awful armour all around until all the way up at tier 10. And the Tier 10 cruiser is a paper ship with a weird armour scheme that spreads it's tonnage all over the place including armouring the ends of the ship with 90mm.

The tier 5 and 6 German cruisers tend to get focus fired early because they are so fragile. Stay at range and have more appealing targets, err, teammates between you and what can shoot at you.
