3DS Catch-all

I love you guys. I feel so much better

Yeah? Well I can trump all of you. I have a Vita.

No, that's just the normal use case.

I got one worse... I've only played the FFXV demo on my PS4! Yes, $400 for a demo.

High five! Actually Demyx uses the PS4 for FFXIV. I think the only other game we have for it is Lego Marvel.

I also played Flower and Rogue Legacy on the PS4!

...but yes it is 99% a FFXIV machine.

Kotaku's 12 best 3ds games list updated.

If you were curious...

  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
  • Mario Kart 7
  • Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D
  • BoxBoy
  • Pokémon X & Y
  • Super Mario 3D Land

Also worth looking at the updates at the bottom. You see which games were on the list, and some of those are still valid to look into.

I think BoxBoy! is a bit of a stretch there.

It kicked off Pushmo, which means it had better be darn good.

For some extra opinions, here's the USGamer and Eurogamer recommendations (only a few months out of date):

Eurogamer:

  • AC New Leaf
  • Bravely Default
  • Crashmo (aka Fallblox)
  • FE Awakening
  • Kid Icarus Uprising
  • Zelda Link Between Worlds
  • Zelda OoT 3D
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
  • Mario Golf World Tour
  • Mario Kart 7
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
  • Outrun 3D
  • Pilotwings Resort
  • Pokemon X&Y
  • Prof. Layton vs. Phoenix Wright
  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

USGamer provides both a comprehensive compilation of all their 4/4.5/5 Star Reviews and a more "ad revenue friendly" Top 10 list:

  • Zelda Majora's Mask 3D
  • Zelda Link Between Worlds
  • Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
  • Pokemon X&Y
  • AC New Leaf
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
  • Bravely Default
  • FE Awakening
  • Theatrythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call
  • Art Academy

Sadly, none of them are right.

They never are. But they're fun to read! Just bask in the glory of all those games that you could be playing

I've played most of them. The ones I haven't, I've usually played another entry in the series, as well.

It does make me realize that Animal Crossing (especially) and Theatrhythm (somewhat) are glaring omissions from my experiences, however.

Any list without Monster Hunter 4U on it is a bad list.

Time for some GWJ top 10 lists?!

I haven't played Phoenix Wright, Pokemon, or Professor Layton, so by default I'd have to change the Kotaku list to include SMT IV and then I'm not sure what I'd pick for the others. Bravely Default has good mechanics but that 2nd half of story filler is just pointless. Kid Icarus is fun. Maybe I'd put Devil Survivor on my list since I have it. It's great but you could play the DS versions. I'd like to put Persona Q on the list but I haven't got it yet.

No Fantasy Life? I am disappoint.

Or my 2014 GoTY list. It's 80% 3DS.

Could you link to that list? I still haven't figured out search on the new site and I'd love to see that list.

Search is under "More" in the menu at the top of the page.

Neither have I. Last I heard, the search function wasn't completely functional. I did, however, put an unrated list on my blog, which is easier for me to search. Fantasy Life was #1, though. In retrospect, I'd give that title to Bravely Default.

Edit:

1. Fantasy Life (3DS)
2. Bravely Default (3DS)
3. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (3DS)
4. Final Fantasy X HD Remaster (PSVita)
5. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (PS3)
6. Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright (3DS)
7. Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy (3DS)
8. Pokémon Alpha Sapphire (3DS)
9. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)
10. Disney Magical World (3DS)

Super-special Honorable Mention to Vib Ribbon (PS3/PSVita) for still being kick-ass after 14 years. I wish they could make a sequel, or someone else could run with the idea of making boards based on Pandora, Spotify, iTunes, etc.

I'll probably do some re-ordering and writeups later on, but, for Clock's sanity, they'll go on my blog, and shouldn't count for her tally. Also, I'm not sure if we're treating X/X-2 HD Remaster as one game, or two separate ones. I haven't yet played X-2 HD Remaster, so I'm not including it.

Ni No Kuni I picked up because it was pretty big on the 2013 GOTY list.

Dishonorable Mentions go to:
-Super Smash Bros. (3DS) - I felt like I had to do too much research to figure out basic game functions. Perhaps it was better for Smash Bros. veterans, but as a noob, I was unimpressed.
-MLB 2014 The Show (PSVita) - I'm probably the wrong target audience, as I hadn't played a baseball video game since Baseball Stars, and there was no tutorial mode or anything for noobs.
-Final Fantasy Tactics (iOS) - The interface ruined it for me. It's an awesome game, and I'd love for it to come out on Vita.

That's actually an interesting challenge. I'll try to post one tomorrow.

I would certainly like to add Mighty Switch Force! as one of the best puzzle platform games at least.

Wrong thread I guess, but whatever, seeing Outrun made me think of Chase HQ.
It's on the virtual console! I had no idea.

I only played arcade, I was pretty good eventually. Never could beat it though. I got to the point where I only had to ram the fifth level car (which I think is the last level) one more time to win and barely missed it. It was hard, the only way to ram it was to use your turbo so things had to play out just right.
Does anybody know how well the VC title relates to the arcade?

I got Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command today, and still only one mission in I can tell I'm gonna love it. The DS really is a treasure trove of turn-based games isn't it?

Have you heard of the GBA?

Advance Wars 2 seemed to become more puzzle, less strategy as time went on.

Huh?

I was trying to recall all of the 3DS game I've played so far, so I went ahead and made a list while I was at it.

  1. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
  2. Fire Emblem: Awakening
  3. Super Mario 3D Land
  4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  5. Fantasy Life
  6. Bravely Default
  7. Pokémon X
  8. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS
  9. Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
  10. Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Thinking about this has reminded me how much of a kick-ass library the 3DS has had so far. There are some pretty amazing games on this brick of a system.

I'm only about 15 hours into Xenoblade Chronicles, but what I've played so far makes me think it'll end up pretty high on my list. Kid Icarus and Majora's Mask are still sitting in my pile. Maybe they'll end up on my list when I get to them.

Advance Wars
Advance Wars 2
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Tactics Ogre: Knight of lodis
Super Robot Taisen: OG
Super Robot Taisen: OG 2
Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon
Fire Emblem
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Yggdra Union
Onimusha Tactics
Rebelstar: Tactical Command
Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars

For many of us who had a GBA, DS and 3DS the DS is the weak system when it comes to turn based games. The GBA is better, the 3DS is better and even the PSP is better, IMO.

Huh, well whatever, I'm having a grand old time.

No, really, turn based strategy games were best played on my Commodore 64 with my Sound Ultimate Xpander 6400 and hacked in Super CPU Accelerator to play full 16 color versions of Apple II+ games I wrote in elementary school.

Everything since has paled in comparison.
