3DS Catch-all

Just a small Sticker Star (Stage 4-3) spoiler I had to share:

Spoiler:

When the stapler came through the window RE style I nearly wet myself laughing. That's all :)

A quick search indicates no previous discussion of Virtue's Last Reward in this thread. Really?

Isn't it on Vita also?

Word on the street is it's a pretty abysmal port. Definitely try the demo before purchase.

Help!

Can someone recommend me some games for my 16 old son for x-mas? He only has Mario, Kingdom Hearts, and Pokemon so far. He really digs JRPGs, but I'm clueless as to what's out that's good for this system.

Final Fantasy: Theatrhythm is my favorite game on the platform, if he's got any history with the FF franchise I think it's worth a look.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star came out recently and is a light JRPG. I think it's really good, but if he demands a lot of depth from the mechanics he might come away disappointed.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask is probably a safe bet, especially if he's never played the series before. Everyone should try one.

JRPGs on the 3DS? Tales of the Abyss and Devil Survivor Overclocked. Paper Mario: Sticker Star is JRPG-ish.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Tales of the Abyss (purest JRPG for the system so far)
Kid Icarus Uprising (unless he's left-handed...)
Whichever Mario he doesn't have yet (3D Land/New Super Mario Bros. 2)
Virtue's Last Reward (if you're okay with dark themes)
Devil Survivor: Overclocked (same)
Layton
Ocarina of Time (if he hasn't played it yet)
Pushmo

...and if you're willing to back up a bit to DS games, there are a ton of heavy Japanese RPGs that are just incredible

Kid Icarus: Uprising is awesome. Just sayin'.

Don't forget kids, the sequel's out now! Crashmo!

Re: Virtue's Last Reward

I'm holding out for a patch, which is maybe foolish since only one game for the system has been patched to date, but I'm still holding out for a patch. There are lots of reports of bugs including at least one easy-to-encounter bug that eats your whole save.

I had heard of the bug and avoided saving during the puzzle phases and had no issues in 40 hours of play.

FYI the bug is that saving in the "PEC Room" (labeled in game) corrupts your save. (also maybe other rooms but only during puzzle solve mode)

I'm going to second Kid Icarus: Uprising. Could easily be my top game on the platform.

Simultaneously, has your son already played Ocarina of Time? The port of that and Star Fox 64 are pretty top notch.

Forgot that he does have Kid Icarus and Zelda.

Many thanks for the recommendations!

Does anyone have a fairly firm idea of when we'll see Fire Emblem or Animal Crossing next year. I can't think of anything in the near future I'm interested in. This is okay as I have a backlog on the Vita, but I'm curious as to what's next for the 3DS.

I've put my 3DS away until Fire Emblem lands, so I'm also interested in a firm release date for that.

Mine isn't away yet. I'm just tempted to sell Paper Mario, stick Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon back in there and largely ignore it until something I really enjoy comes out for it.

Heh, Sticker Star is the first 3DS game this year that has actually gotten me to carry the damn thing around again. I'm still curious about Kid Icarus, but that doesn't seem like a very "portable" portable game to me, so I don't think I'll find much time to play it if I do pick it up.

Yeah. I had some fun with Paper Mario, NSMB2 and 3D Land. I just don't think, ultimately, that those are franchises I care that much about these days. That leaves a portable Pikmin if they'd ever go there and Fire Emblem, Advance Wars and Animal Crossing. I think I'm burned out on the 1st Party stuff, otherwise.

At least a handful of eShop games have been patched, and I think DLC (NSMB 2, Mighty Switch Force) is handled in largely the same manner.

Quick question. How many full 3DS games fit on the default 4GB memory card? I'm considering buying Layton (for the Donkey Kong promo on Club Nintendo) or buying NSMB2 to pick at it without needing the card with me. I have no clue how big these games are, though.

It's going to vary by game. I can say that New Super Mario Bros. 2 is 2,725 blocks, or about 350 MB. I believe Super Mario 3D Land is about 310 MB. Probably safe to assume Layton is in the same range.

Are my online 3DS purchases tied to the machine, or my account? I've bought a couple games plus I have the 10 free "you paid $250 for this, sucker" games that Nintendo gave out to earlier buyers of the system. I'd like to get an XL though, and sell the original 3DS...... but losing my games would suck.

I'd like to do the same but from what I understand, it's machine locked right now. People have complained about having their 3DS stolen and have basically been told "sucks to be you by Nintendo." I think they plan to change that but who knows when.

Can't you just use the system transfer?

You should be able to use the system transfer to get all of that data moved over.

There are also plans to roll out the new Nintendo Network infrastructure to the 3DS in the near future. Supposedly that will link your purchases to an online account rather than to the machine itself.

Hopefully they do that retroactively. I've purchased very few things precisely because of how this works.

Dunno.... this is what I was asking. It sounds like you can though, which is good.

I went from an original to an XL. The transfer basically takes everything that makes your system what it is and moves it to the new one. Meaning games and everything. You have to have both systems available to do it though.

I lost a lot of stuff due to selling 3DS for an XL. Nintendo told me that there was nothing to be done, and that stores should have wifi and allow you to do the transfer. A strong 3G wifi hotspot from a phone isn't good enough, either. See up thread, around the EU XL launch, for my whinging.

Nintendo told me that the new system that ties purchases to profiles, not machines, would roll out with the Wii U launch. Guess what? It didn't.

Basically, you either have to buy the XL, and then sell the 3DS after transferring, which means that you take a hit on trade in, keep both, or find a friendly store that will let you use the wifi and hang around for however long the transfer takes, watching Pikmin.

GAME in the UK lets you take both home, but only if you pay for the XL outright, and return the 3DS the following day, whereupon they will refund the trade in difference.

About twice as many that I can fit on my default 2 GB card. How did you get a 4 GB card with your 3DS?
