State of Decay

Seriously? Is there really no one talking about this game? I can't be the only one excited about building a community in a zombie infested land. It comes out 6/5/2013...which is just over a day.

This kinda dropped off my radar after zombie-overload. Firmly back on it now though.

Is the PC release the same as XBLA? I can't seem to find anywhere to buy it/how much it is Mind you, I'm at work and don't have the time to do a proper search until lunch time!

I think its only XBLA which is sad, because I have to dust my 1st gen Xbox 360 to play it.

There will be a PC release it appears, just, not yet. Still, not all too bad, that will let the initial excitment die down, and then see the truth about the game before I get a chance to buy it.

...rescuing other playable survivors with unique talents.

Sounds like this specific thing lacks multi-player.

After other zombie-based multiplayer games turning into the usual internetz hysterical PvP with a zombie backdrop, rather than people forming a community against the zeds, I'm not sure if single player is a bad thing... time will tell I guess. Will be very interested to hear(read) people's thoughts on the XBLA version now that it's out.

8.9 on IGN. Man, really tempted to get this. But I rather have it for PC.

Yeah, I'm waiting for the inevitable PC release.

I've now got this and Dead State to look forward to 'at some point' on PC. those, as well as the DayZ stand alone, whenever that appears... I think I'll continue my Zombie abstinence until one of the above appears, hopefully by then I won't mind a sudden overdose of Zeds again..

I saw that it has a free trial on Xbox. Downloading it now to see how it is. Didn't know there was a demo for it.

Downloaded and I played it for 30 min. Wow, this game is great. It's a cross between an open world game like Red Dead Redemption, an RPG, and a survival game. I think this game is made pretty well. The menus are nice, movement is smooth, and the combat seems alright. It's definitely not an easy game, there is a challenge in there. The graphics are not that bad, yes there is pop in, etc, but not enough to annoy. The voice acting is decent as well.

I'm really surprised no one else is talking about this game right now. It was always on my radar but I expected it to be bad. Overall this is a good value for $20. My only problem is I prefer to play it on the PC... People should download the trial and check it out. I think this is a gem.

Hmm, if I knew the PC release date, I'd be less tempted to dig out the 360 and get on the demo (also, I think my gold xbl expired...)

Thanks for the insight though! Most of the reviews do seem to mention the pop in, sliding animations and the like, but they don't appear to detract the reviewer from the game much. One issue I may have with it is that one reviewer had put 8-10 hours into it, and had pretty much done most things... If its only a 10-ish hour game, hopefully there is some replay-ability. Either that or I'm just spoiled by open world PC games that are easily 80+ hour games..

No need for Xbox Live Gold to try out the demo.

Oh.... Darn...

For what it's worth, I heard on twitter that the team barely squeaked the XBLA release out in time and the PC port will probably take a while.

Damn. The only thing holding me back is the PC version. I hardly if ever turn on my Xbox. Ever.

Just bought this, and will be playing it EXTENSIVELY tonight.

Caught part of the Live Quick Look. This game looks right up my alley. Just gotta wait for the PC release and inevitable Steam Sale.

Let me know your thoughts!

In short, it's a ton of fun. There is some jankiness: the framerate often chugs, and clipping issues arise often, but nothing that impedes the game's basic proposition: this is a tough, semi-realistic zombie survival sim, and the world is falling apart in it.

Worth a purchase, especially if the Walking Dead meets roguelike mechanics (permadeath, item scavenging, etc.) appeals.

I started playing around 5PM and other than stopping to eat, I couldn't tear myself away until midnight. There's a really excellent mix of action, decision making and building going on here. They do a great job of drip feeding you enough tasks (with good incentives) to make it really tough to put down the controller.

Building up your home base gives you some nice, tangible benefits. Going out and collecting materials, rescuing people (who then join you), lots of zombies to deal with. One of the neatest bits is when you're collecting a base-specific material (meaning not something you use personally, but something related to maintaining the base) you can only carry one rucksack. Rather than make a bunch of trips, you can call to base and an NPC will make their way down to collect it. They could have abstracted this with a progress bar and some randomized chance to fail or whatever. Instead, the NPC actually runs from the base to where the supply is, collects it and runs back. You can follow them the whole way. If they need help and you're not there, the game will let you know. It feels really organic.

This is exactly the kind of mid-priced gaming sweet spot I was talking about this week. It's a focused, well tuned experience and they cut some corners where it made sense. Repeating dialogue, random cookie cutter missions mixed in with story ones, etc. It really doesn't suffer much for it, though. At $20 I feel like I'm getting away with something so far. Highly recommended!

Woohoo Certis agrees!

Ahh, so another game I add to my "reasons to not get an Xbox One" list. Keep giving me good stuff for my non-transferable XBLA pile, MS!

Definitely interested in this one. How much down-time/interaction with the other characters? I'm hoping there's some wander around and get back story/read notes/etc. content.
Can you choose to just hole up as long as you have supplies and talk to the other survivors?
Also, can you head out on your own, or are you always shadowed by an AI character? Can you abandon your base and simply head for the hills as a lone survivor, or is it game over if the rest of your group dies?

Backstory largely exists in the journal, and you can read it at any time. However, reading the journal does not pause the game, so looking at other characters' stories should be done when you're safe someplace. Likewise, you can talk to them, but most dialog is one line when not in a scripted scene; the scripted stuff is more complex, but it's relatively passive (listening to your guys chat on the radio, for example).

You start as a given character, but if you die, you continue playing as another friendly character in your group. This is a major and very cool feature, because death is permanent, and each player or NPC has stats for things like cardio, fighting, scavenging, etc. based on how often you use them. Losing a built-up character becomes a critical moment, and one you have to scrape back from.

It's out? I shall purchase it forthwith.

Waiting on the PC release for this one, looks and sounds great.

Shawn, or anyone, can you you give me a comparison for how it controls? It looks like a lot of fun but I am confused about the interface. To what would you compare the game(strictly control-wise)?

Smoother than Red Dead Redemption.

I played the demo and the little time I had with it felt like it was a solid beat-'em-up in the gameplay dept. There's a contextual move list that lets you dispatch zombies more quickly if you sneak up on them, etc.

Seems like a pretty solid experience so far.

Anyone know how big the world map is?

Bah no Xbox in the Mesa household. Really looking forward to the PC release
