Euro Truck Simulator 2 catch-all

Pages

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anybody has played any of them? UK, Euro etc? I've played the demo of both now and I found them surprisingly enjoyable. I'm thinking of buying at least one of them.

So basically, has anybody else here played them? Anybody like it? And can anybody point me in a direction where I can find out more info about them.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Hear this one's pretty good.

Hmm. Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Check out Rigs of Rods. It's a free driving simulator with a bunch of user created content. Lots of trucks and trailers/loads to haul, plus automobiles, boats, and even rock crawlers to drive.

edit: Just reread your post, yeah you can ignore these next few paragraphs.
I get the urge to play these sim games every now and then, but have not invested in a driving simulator yet. I did try out the 18 Wheels of Steel Extreme Trucker 2. They allow you to download the full game and try it out for 60 minutes of game time. It seems that a lot of the scssoft games allow you to do that, so I imagine you could try a number of them out. Kick the tires for a few hours and see if they're for you.

I follow a guy on Youtube who does 'lets play' videos. He did one for Euro Truck Simulator, crude humor and expletives are in abundance in his videos though.

Downloading the Euro Truck 2 demo now. There's something about being able to apply experience points into different skill categories that makes even truck driving enticing. I hope I can use my joystick, because I don't have a wheel, and hearing and seeing Nerd^3 use the keyboard was pretty grating both to my ears and my gaming standards.

From the Steam Winter Sale 2012 thread:

See if we make it a good game that nobody wants than why not Euro Truck Simulator 2 if it goes on sale. It's as close to a garbage truck simulator as you can get but it's not too bad, I mean this guy played it for an hour and a half unironicly... sort of.

This video is surprisingly entertaining.

This game looks really good, but I would really pay money to have this guy narrate the game!

"The horn sounds like a nun farting in a lift."

I watched the whole Nerd Cubed video, and it was fantastic—partly because it was hilarious, and partly because it shows off a genuinely good game. I love that these industrial simulators exist, since it speaks so much to the scope and depth video games are capable of—then it's even better that ETS2 (unlike some of those others) is actually a great game.

Unfortunately my computer can't run it very well. And playing with a keyboard is crap.

Grrrr.....

Nicely played, sim developer.

I got the ETS2 demo. It works great with an Xbox controller, after configuring a few buttons.

Keithustus, when did the demo run out? When you reached a certain level? I've been playing 4 hours, got to level 4 and just took out a loan to buy my first truck.

Oh, also from the steam thread, thanks to psoplayer:

I don't know exactly what triggered it. I actually was just about to take out a loan, hire a driver, and buy a couple of trucks, but the demo marker came up. I had just completed something like my 12th or so job, was only level 3 (2040 xp), and had just discovered something like my 10th city. I had also found a few other truck dealers and recruitment centers.

Now my biggest worry is that I'm downing the full game, and am keeping my fingers crossed that it keeps my progress.

edit: yea, I'm not starting over.

Not sure how ironic, or witch hunt this thread is, but tied into my mech fantasies, is this strange desire to play an accurate front shovel excavator simulator.

Of course, immediately after it will have to have a post apocalyptic mod applied where I can take down buildings with it, but.... Still would like to learn the operation of a front shovel. That might actually translate into a real world skill.

...hmmm. Wouldn't an episode of a zombie world show or game with an excavator be fun?

I bought that game because of the NerdCubed video

I have this weird love/hate relationship with simulators. I find them fascinating, pick them up, play for about an hour, decide the learning curve is more than I want to deal with and never look at them again. Then I start again six months later with another sim.

So yeah, I looked at that Nerd^3 video and I'll probably be installing this one. For an hour or so. Hopefully just the demo.

Green Man Gaming is selling a steam key for ETS2 for $30. That's $10 less than Steam.

Voucher GMG20-P4DLK-FKYRS knocks 20% off, taking it down to $24.

I almost bit on that farming simulator but was able to contain myself. This one I think I might actually give in. I wish they had a 'Murica version though as driving on the wrong side of the road with a steering wheel on the wrong side of the dash worries me because I'm afraid it might effect my real driving if I play too much. Maybe that's a stupid worry as I've been playing a lot of Dead Space lately and I haven't found myself absently stomping on any corpses lately, so maybe I'll be all right.

Though, I sit in traffic for 3 hours a day. I can't comprehend why I even want to play this, but I really really do.

-edit-
Thanks to that GMG deal, I caved.

Seriously? Seriously?! It's a truck simulator! What's wrong with you people?!

What's next?

Desert Bus?

This is the only simulator you should be playing anyway.

You know of the twelve European countries you'll be driving through in ETS2, only one of them is right-hand drive, right?

Yeah, I've had my eye on this game ever since the Giant Bomb Quick Look a while back.

I'd buy this damn thing in a second if it were on consoles.

So, like others, I found this thread, tried the demo to see what the hoopla is all about, and promptly shelled out 40 clams when the demo screen popped up. The only other game that ever did that (both give the full game AND make me pay for it on the spot) was Mount and Blade. Why can't more developers figure out that this is good for business?? Give me the whole experience, and once I'm hooked, make me pay for the rest.

Only GB is left-side-of-the-road. The rest of Europe is "normal". When you buy a truck, you can choose which configuration you want your steering wheel in. They cost the same.

Ah, well that's good to know.

I should have put a smiley there as I wasn't being serious. Though, it would be cool to drive on local roads. I could do what I wish I could on my commute and drive up 95/495 running cars off the road.

Neither was I, you just teed it up and I had to take a swing.

I caved here too - £20 after the discounts was too tempting..

I dunno, with all the corpses strewn on the streets around here, it gets awfully tempting.

And, hey, kids stomp in mud puddles, and I'm an adult now, right? Don't I get to graduate to something better?

I was thinking about this game. I'm not sure if it has lots of legs, but while playing it I had to compare it to another simulator I have recently attempted: Train Simulator 2000 or whatever it's called. The one that keeps popping new DLC on Steam every 2 weeks. I got it a while ago for peanuts.

In essence it's very similar. You get to drive a "real" thing. For long and boring stretches, punctuated with attention grabbing moments of holy-sh*t-slam-on-the-breaks. But I can't say I ever had true fun in that game. It was too clinical.

This game on the other hand, captures the gist of it all, but removes as much fluff as possible. You can drive from London to Paris in half an hour or so. And pass a bunch of landmarks that give you the true sense of place. Every city is modeled as a Bioware game level. Meaning: you're in a city that spans the whole planet, but you can access 3 walkways and 4 rooms. At first, I was a bit disappointed. But after playing a bit, I'm cool with it. In fact, it even makes sense (unlike in a Bioware game). There is no reason to, and I have really no desire to, drive inside European cities, unless I was sightseeing. Which I'm not. This game is about driving freight on the highways.

I hope I have enough endurance to play the game to some sort of a conclusion. But even if I don't, I'm sure it will have been a fun ride.

I literally played this for almost 24 hours straight. What have I learned:

- don't take a loan or buy a truck right away. Learn the ropes by doing many quick-hire missions instead; you'll avoid inevitable and crippling repair costs and see more of the game world.

- the ability to chug through traffic at 90 kph without incident is easily acquired

- the ability to park a trailer is not. I did it from the 2-view and mouse looking for the longest time, and I was painfully inept at it for a long time, but now I can back them up most of the time from the driver view. Real-world skill attained! Huzzah!

- AI drivers are as smart as you predict

- the roads of Europe seem oddly homogenous, but there are still plenty of signs I can't deduce

- the only part of upgrading trucks that really matters, as far as I know, is the engine, because more hp and torque means decent acceleratioon when pulling 25 tons.

- there doesn't seem to be any difference between the different truck manufacturers other than cosmetics. If that's true, pick a brand based on your favorite dashboard and stick with it

OH, and you might want to disable Steam auto-updates while playing. I can't be certain if that was the cause or only correlated, but I had some game crashes coincidentally while Steam was updating other games.

As I said in the Steam sale thread, I won't be picking up ETS2 for a long time. Or, thanks to some replacement parts for my TrackIR, within 24 hours of that post.

TrackIR works very well with this game, definitely enjoying it.

Two of the first 5 people in my Steam friends list are playing this game.

Holy hell is backing up really hard to do. Everytime I think I got it my cab goes one way, the trailer goes the other. Definitely an art to doing it.

And I had no idea the game has actual streaming audio from lots of different Euro radio stations. I just picked one at random and was listening to Oui FM out of France during my first run.

I broke down and bought it after playing one mission in the demo and reading all the comments here. Also the $24 at Green Man Gaming also helped.

All that time I spend watching Canada's Worst Driver is paying off—I parked that sucker pretty straight on the second go, just using the "look out the window" view and mirrors.

Next up: J-turns.

Okay, I played a bit of the demo and I am kind of hooked.
This game is just begging for a Steam sale, or at least I am begging for one, because I cannot bring myself to buy it at the current price, even through Greenmangaming. /sad
