Matt Flynn - Oakland Raiders
Week 1 thread?
Pick'Ems?
You taking suggestions?
Hm, games that are tough to call this week...
Ravens @Broncos (although that's Thurs night, and we tend to avoid those?)
Packers @49ers
Buccaneers @Jets
Bengals @Bears
Vikings @Lions
Falcons @Saints
Cardinals @Rams
Chiefs @Jaguars
I think he wants someone to write em up.
Did someone say Grantland previews? No? Well, go read Barnwell. Two parts up now:
(1) Cellar dwellers
Listed: Cards, Bills, Jags, Vikings, Jets, Raiders, Rams and Titans
Not listed: Panthers (ha)
(2) Falling franchises (teams that won't do as well this year as last)
Listed: Falcons, Ravens, Bears, 'Boys, Colts, Fins, Bolts, DC
They probably don't want to suffer the slings and arrows of not being RatBoy. Why not just use the ESPN pick em linked previously if no one wants to take over picking and scoring? We could make it available Friday since it's getting rather close to the Thursday game, that way everyone starts on even ground with a missed pick.

Yeah maybe if Certis (who is awesome ) hadn't shut down the "search for Rat Boy" thread, we'd have this under control by now. :p
I don't think many people want to pick every game, though.
Is there a service somewhere that lets someone set a few games to pick and then allows a group of people to compete on those picks? I'd be happy to make picks, I just don't want to deal with the tabulations every week. I had planned to write something to scrape and take care of that, but got too busy with other projects.
Can't we just use a google doc?
Have people enter their picks there. And then you lock it/copy it/replace it with next week's/whatever... at 1pm on Sunday?

If by "we", you mean "Stele just volunteered", yes, we can.
Hm. Ok, Google Docs has forms. Seems easy enough... click click...
Try this: GWJ NFL Picks, Week 1
See if a few of you can fill this out, and let me see how it submits results to the spreadsheet. A new tab for each week or something would be great.
Might be easy enough to copy the form and change the names every week.
Has a toggle for letting users re-edit after submit, but I have that disabled right now.
EDIT: Duh. After submitting the form myself I see there's a timestamp on submission. So definitely could enable the re-edit, but would cutoff based on time submitted. Also I think I saw an option to "lock the form from accepting new submissions" so I can toggle that at 1pm Sun.
That's pretty slick Stele.
It even makes pretty tasty pie charts by default to show you the total responses.
Very sweet.
Ah forgot that I could just string formulas together. Got a counter thing going now for wins and losses. Stuck some hypothetical results in my form response spreadsheet and bam:
Stele 4 1
*Legion* 4 1
Elliottx 3 2
Secret Asian Man 2 3
MilkmanDanimal 3 2
McFinn 3 2
oldmanscene24 1 4
thejustinbot 3 2
Hm... still need to think about formatting for here... that was just a quick copy+paste.
EDIT: And figure out if the form response for week 2 will just insert into another tab in this same worksheet so I can do easy season-long sums.
EDIT2: It has the option to submit as new tab in existing spreadsheet but then it errors out and says a form is already linked to that spreadsheet. Maybe if I unlink the previous week once the first week is done... oh hell, I don't know. Guess worst-case I just copy the name/win/loss column from the previous week.
*Legion* do you want to do writeups on the 5 games I picked?
Packers @49ers
Bengals @Bears
Falcons @Saints
Cardinals @Rams
Chiefs @Jaguars
And make that the official form for week 1? Or do we want to start fresh?
I can always copy+paste that into a new form/sheet if you guys who picked to test were just picking for fun. And I guess try that enable edit button? Surely we won't have cheaters here. :p
Well I enabled editing... and that gives me a link when I submit... but doesn't let me go back and re-edit the picks I made before it was enabled... so the 10 people who picked already would be stuck... guess I better make a new one.
If those 5 games are good then I'll just PM you the new form link, and you can drop it in the week 1 post.
I guess it might just be easiest if I add you as collaborator and you can edit the form, see the results, etc.?
I definitely wasted an hour fiddling with this today, but copying to a new Form each week should be pretty darn simple. Will be toughest to figure out this Sun, if I can close form 1, and send form 2 to the same spreadsheet or if I have to keep making new ones... after that little wrinkle is smooth, I can probably pass the whole thing back to you if you want it. Or I can do the maths and you can do the posts, if that's what you want. Just let me know.
Hah I actually had that in my previous post, but edited it out when I remembered the collaborator button.
Only difference I had was maybe doing it during MNF each week, unless MNF is one of the picked games of course. At that point I know I'll generally be sitting near the PC and have free time. Never sure how Tues mornings will go, and I don't want you waiting on me to start the threads.
PM-ing you the link to the new Week 1 form in just a minute.
Thanks to everyone who tested it out. If you have complaints about the theme or anything, now is the time.
