Metro: Last Light Кatch-all

I really struggle with the pacing in these games. I guess some people enjoy listening to the conversations that strangers are having all around, but it's too passive for me. That's not what I look for in games. It reminds me of the boring part of Assassin's Creed, where you walk next to someone in the city for five minutes while they yap at you.

If you play it in Russian, with subtitles, not all of the side conversations are translated. Also, personally I can read them quicker than they are said. You may want to try it.

I appreciate the recommendation but I've pulled the plug. There are too many other games I want to play right now to be playing one I am lukewarm-to-negative on.

On that note, there really isn't a good female presence in this game so far. They don't seem to have worked on developing any good female characters. You really see women in the game portrayed as victims for the most part. Even in the "city" sections, you don't really interact with any female characters.

A problem with a lot of games coming out of Mainland and Eastern Europe I think (see also STALKER, Two Worlds, Gothic, etc). Even the sniper Anna quickly becomes a princess in need of rescuing....

This is by far the best FPS game I've played all year.

Everything about it is such an improvement over 2033. It's really really well done.

Even the children's voices? *shudder*

This game is pretty "framey" for a Nvidia flagship title..surprised its running so poorly on the latest Nvidia drivers. Havent tried this on my AMD system yet but I imagine its gotta be brutal.

There is an issue with the game engine currently on many systems. The game drops 5 or so frames every few seconds. It's a game engine issue and they're apparently aware of the issue and will fix it eventually. Until then, I'm putting the game on the backburner. It's not pleasantly playable in its current state.

I don't agree with this sentiment quite so much but it is still a good game. The graphics have been improved, and the overall life in the cities improved as well. Unfortunately the story is not as good, and it has a bunch of pretty bad boss fights. As mentioned before the female characters in the game are pretty weak overall. In fact I felt most the characters were less interesting this time around (save for 'Athos'). Also the first one was a big railroad and so it this one but it does it worse. I can't count the number of times I was trying to kill something but they were invincible because of some scripted event.

Interestingly enough the game also got easier, and a bit more simplified then before. Stick to stealth with a few knives you can basically slaughter everyone. I only really died when I broke from script or didn't know what to do next in the script. I definitely liked the first one more, but still this wasn't bad. Just well lukewarm and rather disconnected.

Started a second playthrough to get the good ending (and hopefully the "minimum human kills" achievement).

Something I noticed in the process - If the Nazis are all about genetic purity right down to your height and the size of your head...how come the officer that confronts you in your cell is getting away with wearing spectacles...?

Fair points.

I'm enjoying the story a fair bit. Being forced down a linear path doesn't worry me that much mainly due to how the game is really set in corridors anyway...

I didn't mind the boss fights that much, but I don't really like fighting any of the creatures anyway, so I didn't really think about how more annoying they were. The section in the Church Catacombs is terrible with the watchmen and stalkers(?), culminating with that boss (Big Momma).

I haven't run into any unkillable enemies due to the script not allowing it.

Here's a couple of screens, I haven't got this fully maxed out, but it's pretty high.

Obviously they are just fashionable and if anyone says otherwise they are shot. Honestly found it strange that there is a nazi group at all. If you took a random group of Russians the odds of their being Nazis seems pretty low.

Didn't realize I didn't get the good ending til I looked it up. You need to be a damn saint for that one.

I just completed that part last night. After two awful boss fights (Big Momma, and the marsh creature in Nightfall)—death to all boss fights—getting back to sneaking past humans was a welcome relief. Fighting mutants has never been compelling in the Metro games, and twice so far in MLL there's also been shoot-waves-of-muties-while-waiting-for-a-thing. Blech.

So I'm about two-thirds of the way through, and haven't shot a single human on Hardcore (Ranger mode didn't last—not the way to play the first time, I didn't even realize there was a KO option without the hints; but I've turned off the crosshair, so it's perfect now). The sneaking is a little rudimentary but functional—Artyom can be more incredibly stealthy than Garrett—and the ability to punch out a guard who's been alerted is great. My Artyom is going to need reconstructive surgery on his hands. I use a shotgun on mutants, I have a silenced pistol I call "The Lightswitch", and have never even touched my third weapon or ranged weapons.

Coming off Dishonored, where I didn't kill anyone, I couldn't get into BioShock 2—why do I have to shoot everyone? Metro: Last Light is fantastic in that regard, allowing a lot more freedom than a nominally linear shooter. I guess Metro 2033 also had plenty of multiple paths, but the stealth was never good enough to encourage me to take advantage of that—certainly I shot a lot of mans in that game (dat pneumatic sniper rifle). But playing stealthy and non-lethally hasn't seemed less than enjoyable, definitely feasible, in Last Light. Concussions for everyone!

Had an immense amount of fun with this one, same as with Metro 2033, and I think it will be FPS of the year. Though despite being better than BioShock Infinite by and large, I sincerely doubt it will get that recognition, especially from the gaming press.

If you check on Steam there is now a "Season Pass" DLC for $15.

Deep Silver wrote:

"Artyom’s story may have been concluded in Metro: Last Light, but there are other characters with stories to tell, some familiar locations that fans of the Metro series wanted to revisit, and some new challenges that 4A wanted to explore," said Andrew Prokhorov, Creative Director at 4A Games. "Since completing the game we have been working on these new stories and hope to release them throughout the summer."

That means that while they had some ideas early this year, this is all content that is being created as we speak, and content that will be created over the next couple of weeks and months.

The Season Pass will be $14.99 / £11.99 / €14.99 or 1200 MS Points.

Included are 4 individual DLCs:

The "Faction Pack" and the "Chronicles Pack," which both focus on new and original single-player gameplay and stories that expand upon the Metro: Last Light universe.

The "Tower Pack" which is something different that focuses on challenge and pure gameplay for Metro veterans.

The "Developer Pack" which is not an SDK, but which will give players a unique environment and tools to play around with.

The Season Pass gives you the DLC Packs in one package, at a discount compared to buying them individually, and also includes the Absats weapon for use right away. The Season Pass will also be available throughout, so there is no deadline for getting everything at a discount; if you want to wait and see what the individual DLCs are first, you can always get it later.

Last Light is a great game, but it still has a long way to go before it will surpase a game like Infinite.

Opinions are naturally going to vary about this, but Last Light is far more engaging to me than Bioshock Infinite was.

Going back to the technical issues: I've been meaning to mention that I'm playing on 360, and within a minute of starting playing, the game will almost always pause for a couple seconds. I've also had it hard lock the console maybe three times in about six or seven sessions. Definitely not the norm for a console game, but not disastrous.

But I'm afraid if 4A patches that, they'll also resolve the throwing knives issue—that they can be bought from merchants for 0 and sold for 1 on Hardcore difficulty. Bit of an exploit. I've been enjoying it.

I can't wait for them to fix the PC version. *waits for patch*

There are some PS3 bugs too. I encountered a start bug, where the game fails to load my data, so I cannot load my save. A console restart fixes it. Also I had a really bad gameplay bug while trying to free The Communist guy from the Reich. Using a knife to kill the NPCs caused the game to lock up. I then restarted checkpoint and the NPCs did not react to being shot, but they did die and the scene eventually progressed to the next checkpoint.

I also don't think the game is optimized that great. My computer is fairly beastly, but when theirs rain it just starts lagging. Quite annoying at certain levels.

Well my non-lethal play lasted until The Chase. Fists versus shotguns isn't really tenable on Hardcore. If you're thinking about trying a non-lethal run, I'd recommend Easy.

So I'm "stuck".. I'm supposed to get Gas from either the Gas Station and/or the Airplane.. found the plane.. but no gas.. where the heck is the gas station? I don't see anything that even looks close to a gas station and I'm running low on everything and the never ending almost impossible to kill water creatures are getting ridiculous.

Side Edit/note

This is another game that clearly shows the need for a next gen console already.. the Textures on the 360 version are a muddy/blurry low resolution mess... the entire game feels like its running through a 640x480 VGA filter.

Spoiler:

The gas station is on the opposite side of the plane. It has some markers and such telling you so. I actually found that first before heading to the plane. Clearly the game makes you go to both.

Hated that section got fairly lost as well, the beasties there are not fun to fight.

I am really looking forward to playing this game and have been for awhile. I knew that nature of the developer so I am waiting for the patch to come and then I am in. I'm going to have to turn the settings down with my 560ti but I'm sure it's still going to look great.

I need to do a playthrough with English voiceovers, the Russian ones are good as in 2033.

"Papa! When eeer yooo goink to catch a feeesh?"

Great game.. surprised there wasn't more chatter about this..

I would love to be playing and chatting about this game, but it came down to money and I have none. I wonder if more chatter will happen after a steam sale.

I need some help. I'm in chapter The Garden.

Spoiler:

 Mother bear is kicking my ass in the bog. Playing stalker mode. I have 4 barrel shotgun, and gas arrow gun. I'm not sure what my total ammo count is on them.
I feel like I am wasting my ammo trying to get the feral dogs attack start up. When her back is to me I've thrown all 5 grenades and got off a shotgun blast. This go around I used all my ammo and secondary items. When the back is to me all i have is melee and stab her an easy 10 times before the slow mo ends

Ok I think it works sort of like this

Spoiler:

When the Mother bear is being attacked and you have to shoot it in the back you only really need one shot. You have to aim a little higher and when you do the dogs stop attacking immediately. I found aiming at a higher point on the back and going real close did it. I remember trying at first just to unload on the back at first, figuring out that was pointless later.

Did I mention I think the boss fights were awful.

Spoiler:

Claymores were handy on that fight.. would drop it in front of me.. Bear would charge.. then a few shots would stun the bear and the dogs would attack. Rinse Repeat..
