Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Catch-All

I'm kind of hooked on this. I'm curious if anybody stuck all the way through as Strider, or if you really need to upgrade to something else at some point?

Also, my pawn's name is Devi, and I'm training her to not let me die despite me not being very good. So if that interests you in a pawn, please take a look.

I'm sure you can beat the whole game just using one class for yourself, but.. well, it's a 50+ hour game and you will probably have Strider totally maxed out after 15 or 20. There's no good reason not to at least dabble in Ranger for some added bow skills, other than role-playing or something.

Also, Assassins and Rangers play a whole lot like the Strider (especially Assassin), so it's not like you won't have that sweet shooting mechanic or quick dagger strikes.

Ok, I love this game and all, but only one save file is really starting to irk me. Maybe if they didn't have 30 hidden checkpoints that negates my safety save. I just lost out on doing a quest for turning another one in.

On the other hand, I just jumped on a griffin right before it took off and then hacked at the wings while flying through the air, bringing it back down just before it strafed my team with that lightning attack, all while umpteen bandits were shooting arrows everywhere.

I tried Magic Archer for a while, but went back to a maxed out Strider. The thing is, some of my favorite Strider abilities aren't permitted with Ranger, so I'm not quite sure I want to make the change over. I might do some experimentation, though, for some side quests or something.

Even so, nothing's wrong with playing Ranger for a bit to gather some support abilities to make your Strider better.

Not to mention the differences in which attributes increase on levelling up between different vocations. Ranger increases your Stamina more than Strider does per level.

I think the biggest thing about starting a new vocation is to realise that you're basically becoming a level one character again. I had the same reaction as you, ccesarano, on going from Strider to Ranger but I stuck with it and by the time I was maxed-out I was having as much fun as when I was maxed-out as a Strider. Once you unlock the abilities it becomes much more interesting to play in each vocation.

Yeah I'm about the max out my warrior and I'm looking at what class to take next. It's either going to be the assassin of the mage knight. Not sure which I want. Also I got a pair of goodjer pawns, who were also on the adventure with me, and they are a way higher level then me. Doesn't seem like it matters though. Also ogre are so much worse the cyclopes.

Also found the mine shortcut, that would have helped a lot.

I don't seem to be getting my dagger skills even though I have them selected in the slots. It feels like I'm just getting regular light and heavy attacks and B shows as unallocated even though I have an ability there. Is there an armour restriction or something I'm missing?

With the save restrictions I had a bit of a scary moment tonight:

Spoiler:

I was descending into a circular dungeon (yes that one) and met a troll. I decided to run past him as I just wanted to get the quest done. What was the worst that could happen? I'd just kill him on the way out if I felt like it. Next thig I know I'm fleeing for my life and I meet my troll friend again; blocking the way and doing an Oscar worthy impression of King Kong. On the first try to run past him he pummelled the entire party and kicked one party member off a long drop. I was starting to think I was well and truly sunk but, on the second try, I managed to slip past him.

You have to change the timing of how you press the buttons. If you read the description they offer a vague-ish explanation of how to do the skill when toggling between the "square button" (on PS3). I was wondering the same thing when I was playing fighter until I started messing around with my girl while no monsters were around and I noticed that if I paused and then hit the attack button (at different times in the combo) I got completely different results - like one is to pound an enemy into the ground while another knocks them backward into the air a bit. Haven't tried it with the dagger skills yet but I'm pretty certain that's how it's to be done.

I lucked out on the way down when I was really, really low level (like 4 or 5). My party was just wailing on him and doing no damage and he was knocking us left and right. Finally, he cornered me between two pillars by the edge but when he came to attack that final time he squatted and then jumped over me into the abyss below. Actually had that a few times with that enemy when I was low level and unable to beat it via normal means.

The thing I had trouble with was:

Spoiler:

I thought I had to beat all those tentacles but they kept on respawning and I kept on dying. Well, eventually I got fed up and left - quite a thrilling escape, if I do say so myself - and now when I go back it's all okay: no tentacles or anything.

Oh, and one thing everyone should remember to do is mark (or memorise) where all the special chests are throughout the game because they restock after a short number of days and the loot drops scale with your level - not to the level of the enemies around them!

Spoiler:

Usually I make a trip to the catacombs, the pawn guild, the sewer under cassardis and moontower (or whatever it's called) just to go and see what I can get.

I knew there had to be something. I'll practice on a few goblins and perhaps do some reading/video watching.

Fortunately, the two pawns in my part who were in the know, fled for the stairs yelling "Run! run! Whatever you do don't fight them!" so I was left in no doubt.

Great tip thanks. There are quite a few WoW-like things in the game but in a great way.

I'm only playing warrior to get the strength augments for going back to strider/ranger. He's waaaay too slow. I killed a drake (no dragonforged :() with him, but I don't think it would have been as hard if I'd had Hundred Kisses. And I'm tired of Griffins not coming down to fight because my ranged pawns won't shoot at them.

Some of you have used my pawn Kiddo. Any requests for abilities on her/

I see she's changed to be a mage :). I've heard that holy spells help with undead/skeletons which can be a pain but I haven't had a problems with any undead so far.

Other than that good healing and the more spectacular the better.

Assassins can equip shields.

I've switch to an assassin from a warrior, and my pawn from mage to sorceress. Losing healing was annoying wish that carried over. Also I'm really missing my shield although having a bow is real nice.

Edit: Nah I know assassins can use shields I just want a bow instead. During my entire play through as a warrior I never got any shield skills. I barely used the shield. Thing is when I did use it, it helps a lot. Also having a meh bow with meh skills isn't helping.

Yeah, I went from Strider to Ranger to Magick Knight to Fighter. So far I'm holding off heading back to strider because even though I love the bow skills of the Strider vocation, I love the flexibility of the sword and shield. In fact, I'm currently running with me and my pawn as fighters and two mages and it's working great. The only time it's not is when I need an archer to work in a specific function... which, apparently, only a real person can do as the AI isn't great in that respect.

Mostly, I use half moon strike, run thrust (or whatever it's called) and the entice/shield bash skill which lures enemies to you.

Also, fighters get much cooler equipment than Striders...

She's leveled up fighter and Warrior and I want greater control over which spells are being used, so a mage she becomes.

Ok, a bit of a spoiler question about a questline involving the Duchess:

Spoiler:

Does meeting the Duchess and saving her affect my ability to enter the city, or should I finish the royal quests first?

You can always enter the city.

My pawns deep voice finally got too much for me so I investigated changing it. At first there only seemed to be a one off change for 5000 rift crystals but, just as I was resigning myself to saving up, I found a barbers shop off the fountain square in town (down past the ale house) that will allow a full appearance change, including voice for 3000 gold (that's just main character or pawn not both) and it seems to be repeatable.

This game was killing me over the weekend. I'm going to have to be careful when I play it. I'd go in for ten minutes to do some menial jobs, like updating my armour and putting all my ogre testicles in airtight jars, and then, two hours later, I'd be on my third quest with a whole new party and with a mental list of four or five things I wanted to get done before I stopped playing.

I really feel bad whenever I kill the lion part of a chimera before the rest. Watching the goat hop around frantically as the lion's head lolls about makes me feel sorry for the poor beast.

I must try this.

I, too, feel the need to go back and target primarily at the head. It just seems like the lion head is the least threat, as snake tail spits out a giant poison cloud and goat head casts magic.

I've planned on getting this for a while, but wanted to wait for the Capcom treatment and buy the 'ultimate' edition of the game. I've read the Capcom press release on Dark Arisen and I'm a little confused, will Dark Arisen include the original game content and the DLC or is it a DLC standalone?

You people are monsters!

The real problem is the people who are cross breeding snake tailed goats with lions.

I'm pretty sure Dark Arisen has always been DLC standalone.

Wait, where's that last shot taken? Still not completed pre-dragon yet... So I'm hoping there are more lands to explore!

Spoiler:

Okay, now I'm post dragon.. Maybe I missed the lore everyone was referring to before but I didn't see any blurb on where pawns came from.

Also, there's mention of dragon on arisen action in the wikia comments. Makes me wonder iif, you-know-who is active there!

The Kiddo shot? That's in the starting village :).

Friend me up, I'm m1zer-o (who the hell took all my normal handles). I need more goodjer meat shields..eh I mean pawns. Wait that still sounds bad.

Dark Arisen is the original game, plus the DLC for $40. There is even an incentive for old players to pick it up. See Polygon.
