The thread for movies that aren't going to get their own thread but are still in theaters

I figured it wouldn't be an issue to waltz into Darren Aronofsky's divisive new film on a Tuesday evening. It was sold out. Stupid irony-seekers, don't you all have help desk and gig-economy jobs to rest up for?

I did get into the late night show.

Well there's a sequel being made.

Apparently it's a bible allegory?

I'm back. And yes, divisive--there are people who admire mother!, and...people at my showing that got up and left. I can't blame them, because there is a deeply, deeply upsetting sequence, so if anyone is considering seeking it out, be aware of that. As for me..."enjoyed" is the wrong word, so let's go with "I felt like it was a good use of my time." I'm an Aronofsky fan, though.

Even without that sequence, the film is still pretty nuts and aggressively off-putting, but I feel the recent wave of "What is it? What's it about?" articles are kinda pointless, because the film is pretty clear about what it's about, which is good because even though I admire it, I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to watch it again. Like Requiem for a Dream, this could be another amazing film I never have to see again. This could also be his payback for people being down on Noah.

Noah is hilarious.

God dammit.

I'm also an Aronofsky fan, and this sentence is probably enough to get me to see this new film.

They alive, dammit!

The Happening 2, a Mark Wahlberg tour de force.

What was the name of Unbreakable 2 again... I've already forgotten and thought it might be a good background movie while cooking.

There hasn’t been one yet. They are making a sequel called Glass.

The post-credits/last scene of Split had Bruce Willis' character from Unbreakable, so I'm counting it as a sequel.

Yes technically Split was Unbreakable 2.

That spoiler is honestly the only reason I've considered watching Split.

Split is worth it just for McAvoy's performance.

I wasn't going to mention it, but it was definitely a great little tidbit at the end. Somehow made me smile after how terrible I felt from watching the two hours before it.

Yeah, he was definitely fantastic.

Yeah honestly that was the only reason why I wanted to watch it. I thought Unbreakable was the good first half of a film.... really just wanted a second half (edited shorter of course).

I haven't watched an M. Night Shyamalan film in ages, but my general critique of big twists in stories is that the consequences afterwards are often more interesting than the shocking reveal, and more stories should push further past that and explore the result. I want more second halves.

Anti Matter is really good! From the RT description:

Anti Matter is science fiction noir. Ana, an Oxford PhD student, finds herself unable to build new memories following an experiment to generate and travel through a wormhole. The story follows her increasingly desperate efforts to understand what happened, and to find out who - or what - is behind the rising horror in her life

It's sort of a blend of Memento with a dash of Ex Machina. The reviews state it's a low budget movie, but it didn't feel that way to me.

Well, that's now on my radar. Sounds cool.

So I saw Kingsman: The Golden Circle last night. Before I say anything else, I want to give a sort of spoiler that might impact your enjoyment of the film. I think if you know it ahead of time, you'll be able to go in enjoying the flick better. Of course, you might be able to glean it from the trailers anyway, but just in case either way, putting it behind the tag.

Spoiler:

Roxy, the only other candidate to pass and get into the Kingsman, "dies" early on. I use quotations because my buddies were trying to tell me "Well, Harry came back, so she could come back if they make a third one!" Okay, great, but why couldn't we have a place for her here? Why couldn't she at least be injured and have some sort of input to on-going events? Was it the actress' schedule? Did the actress want out?

I kept holding on to some hope that she'd show up later in the film, and then there was a small hope she'd be in a post-credits stinger, but nope! She's not there anywhere. So, for all we know, she's dead. Presumably to make room for all the new characters. Which, hey! They were all great! But God dammit, movie...

With that said, Kingsman was possibly one of the most fun, if not the most fun, movies I've seen all year. Granted, I still haven't seen Wonder Woman or Atomic Blonde, the latter of which I'm most certainly disappointed to have missed (I blame the fact that none of my friends were interested. I was unable to drive my car the whole time it was in theaters). However, this movie was definitely a lot more fun for me than Spider-man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy, and the (surprisingly diverse!) crowd on opening night with me was in great agreement.

It pays to watch the first film shortly before seeing this one, because they do a lot of call-backs and references to it, both small and large. While they'll give enough of a refresher on certain things, they're counting on you being familiar with not just the events, but little details such as the poison in the shoe-knife. It's a proper sequel that expands on its predecessor and maintains the style, but doesn't keep trying to one-up itself. A similarly quirky villain, but not an exact recreation. Really well choreographed and creatively shot fight sequences that aren't trying to one-up the Church scene in the prior film. Sure, there's a lot of similarities, but there's no one fight that's supposed to be an escalation in terms of violence and gore. It's just a bunch of good fights.

In the end it's one of the few films I've seen this year that has me thinking "I'm buying that" immediately. Though I will...hrm... See, there's one other element I liked, but I got to caution again because it plays out in a way that can be viewed as gratuitous and/or disrespectful to women.

Spoiler:

So, in the prior film I always viewed the "If you save the world I'll let you do it up me bum" as a joke on the romanticization of James Bond getting the girl. Yeah, Eggsy gets the girl, but it's crude, ridiculous, and hardly romantic. But rather than Eggsy getting a different girl each film, he's actually still in a relationship! And they love each other! Holy sh*t!

And then they deal with the fact that part of the job is seduction. Eggsy becomes conflicted, because through ridiculous circumstance he basically has to finger a girl in order to plant a tracker on her. He doesn't want to, he's conflicted, but he's gotta save the world. This stuff is fine! When he finally decides to finger her, well... I didn't know an R-Rated movie could be that clear! Finger goes right down her stomach, camera zoomed in, until you see the finger slip beneath her panties and yup, it cuts right before you can tell where his finger inserts.

So, uh... yeah... that was a thing that happened, and I definitely think people should be cautioned.

Clearly not a film for everyone, but I had a blast.

Also:

Spoiler:

Best use of Elton John since The Muppet Show.

Also saw that yesterday.
I enjoyed it, but I feel the first one is better.
The villain was kind of bland, the main henchman is miles away from scissor legs lady and the story is a bit bloated (apparently there's 4 hours of footage). Honestly, I think I could do without all the Golden Circle characters.
On the other hand, it still has fun characters (I liked what they did with Tequilla, not so much with Roxy), fantastic action scenes and an incredibly raunchy scene that had everyone on my theatre laughing, but I can imagine is not for everyone.

Just got back from Kingsman 2. Not as good as the first, but we still had a good time. I generally wanted different characters to die or live. I can see they made their choices to get what they felt were interesting character arcs, but there were some unfortunate casualties.

I disagree with Mark Kermode about the infamous scene. Whilst I could have done without it, it had a plot reason to exist. However, there was more than a whiff of the Clara character being a ball in a game between two men, which I think is more problematic than the scene itself.

I hated the main cameo. Even one scene was too many. And the great Julianne Moore was frankly wasted.

We had a good time with it though.

I have to try and catch Death of Stalin now. I don't think the family will be interested.

Saw The Ninjago movie. Enjoyable film for adults/kids.

I am so glad to be hearing moderately positive things about the Kingsman sequel. Sequels always make me anxious, and Kingsman earned a top spot in my book after I saw it blind and on a whim, so this one had me particularly nervous.

I am jonesing to see Anti Matter now. Kingsmen 2 was tops on my list but that has changed. Nothing against Kingsmen, it looks great. The plot of Anti Matter just sounds fantastic.

Antimatter has an Upstream Color vibe, and that movie (despite much raving I read about it) did absolutely nothing for me. So, I'll pass.

Loved Kingsmen: The Golden Circle. Sooooooo fun.
