The thread for movies that aren't going to get their own thread but are still in theaters

Honestly, if it was ladies or dudes-with-kids, it was with.

Defo got some ats from outside that group tho.

I don’t know what you all are talking about. It had some great callbacks, and I had fun. Was also an absolute delight to see Peach empowered and not your generic damsel in distress. Sure, there might’ve been an extra “mamma mia” or two in there, but it was good, didn’t overstay its welcome and had a fun soundtrack. I was pleasantly surprised.

Saw D&D: Honor Among Thieves last night - wonderful movie. Best I have seen this year. Of course that is only Antman, and Shazam in theaters but still way better than either one of those.

Hugh Grant has quietly gathered credits in some real sleeper films. DNDHAT and Paddington 2 aren't supposed to be high art and aren't, but man are they reviewed well.

I'm sorry, but Paddington 2 is as close to the perfect film as I have ever seen.

My Mario review: worth it if and only if you can enjoy it vicariously through your kid.

Otherwise it's a 90 minute technicolor commercial for something you already own.

This is spot on.

It made a killing, but I wonder how much of that is parents who just want to take the kids to the theater and eat some junk food and have (relative) peace/quiet for 2 hours (hey, that's a-me!)?

This is kind of frustrating because Dungeons and Dragons was right there, and it was actually, legitimately GOOD.

Yup, right there with you. Not sure why it's getting slammed here? It was a legit good movie.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is on the same level as Super Mario Bros. It was a good, entertaining movie as well. Had enough callbacks to Forgotten Realms and other Easter Eggs while also being a fun entertaining ride.

Hard disagree.

Its a perfectly fine kids movie. Which is to say it's empty, overly shiny, narratively pointless and nakedly commercial. Great fanservice, bullshit art.

Which is fine. There's absolutely a place for movies like that. That makes it commercially functional, not good.

I like this guy's Let's Plays and thought this was good.

You Won’t Remember the Mario Movie in a Year

Mario is one of the most iconic characters in pop culture. Iconic characters succeed not by changing, but by being true to their iconic selves.

Modern movie discourse seems incapable of judging anything without applying the lens of character growth through a dramatic arc.

Therefore a Mario movie can be either a good Mario or a good movie, but not both.

Nintendo seems to have decided to stick with the choice that has served them well for decades. Can't say I blame them for that.

Fang, did they give up on reloading in this one? They did it very well in the previous ones...

Evil Dead Rise looks fun. One of the weapons, other than a chainsaw is, apparently, a cheese grater being used to.. umm... used as a skin grater.

Also there's a scene in the trailer that reminds me of the door blood flood from The Shining.

Wick reloaded. Its just that a 21 bullet clip lasted for 50+ bullets. He should have run out after shooting and double tapping 5-6 henchmen but kept on shooting another 5+ before cover + reload or using a foe's dropped weapon.

I heard that no real guns were used on set. All the muzzle flashes were added later with CGI.

Lol, half the reloads were edited out... ?

Or they didn't have the budget for the reload CGI, hahaha

I think what they said was no blanks or operable guns were used on set. However, they did use replicas to get the weights and movement and such accurate. So he's actually dumping mags and moving the weapons around... which is why the had him train for it, I believe. Anyone know for sure?

There's training videos on youtube and they're reloading...

In the end it doesn't matter - he shot via CGI or blanks way, way, way more times than he could have based on how often he reloaded.

It was a fun movie but it wasn't trying to be accurate.

I'm gonna watch that more closely. But yeah, fun comes first.

I don't really mind. It was just more obvious than the prior movies.
Plus, please tell me that incendiary shotgun pellets are not a thing?
Cool on camera/film... Real world? I have a serious problem with that if its not super banned.

I assume you're talking about Dragon's Breath ammo. Definitely a thing, and illegal in several states.

John Wick Chapter 4 was, I think probably the best of the 4 movies, but it was largely incoherent and way too long, no matter how thrilling the car chases and Sacre Coure step shootout (I've walked up those steps, it wasn't nearly as exciting) can be. The chorography and filmwork for the set piece in the Parisian house though was worth the price of admission alone. It was terrifically entertaining, I'll give it that

It isn't in a theater yet but this seems like a good place for this

The Next Transformers Movie Is a 'Mess,' Claims Insiders

Duh. I could tell that from the trailer.

Why can they reboot Superman and Batman every 20 minutes but they keep slogging on with this Transformers universe? Just reboot!

Breaking: six previous Transformers movies also "messes," claim people who understand filmmaking and/or basic story structure.

Or, just walk away and leave all of them alone.

The movies are so insane. I loved that time Anthony Hopkins explained that the Whitwicky family had a history of involvement with the Transformers that included almost every notable person in human history and then they flashed a painting where Optimus Prime fought in the side of the British in the Revolutionary War.

I finally saw this earlier today with my eldest kid and this is my exact take.

If you like war movies or over-the-top action, Sisu is worth watching in the theaters. The movie gets crazier and more unrealistic as it goes on, but it’s still fun to see Nazis killed in brutal ways.

You had me at "Nazis killed."

Will see if my brother and I can catch it on Saturday.
