In This Thread Bombsfall Will Show You Indie Animation And You Will Like It

I am an independent animator by trade. Thus, I know a lot about indie animation and you don't. And in this thread I would like to change that. I will be posting some gems of contemporary indie animation, along with some info about each of them. You've probably seen some of them floating around the internet, but a lot of them you probably haven't. But now you will. And you will like it.

Indie animations. Let me show you them.

I think your forgot the indie animations

PATIENCE SHALL BE REWARDED

Hey, I'm a huge animation fan, I watch the directory commentary on stuff like Wall-E and Kung Fu Panda.

Thanks for starting this thread, bombs. This is great stuff.

Here's one that I scored a few years back, in collaboration with some ridiculously talented young German artists.

Years before Sword & Sworcery came out, I became aware of Superbrothers' work through his illustration and especially his animation, which is pretty great. He hasn't done any in a while, so these are pretty deep cuts.

This thread completely lives up to its title.

Bombsfall, please use these powers for good.

Bombsfall, yes please.

Curate away.

This guy 'bombsfall' posted this amazing video that he created in another thread.

I made a music video. Please watch it. Video is for Tomas Kanolky, who some of you might know from Catch 22 or Streetlight Manifesto. Nice guy.

It's amazing.

Listen, this is not Bombsfall Will Show You Self Promotion And You Will Like It.

But thanks. I'm glad you liked it!

Sorry

(it just goes to establish your apparently quite worthy credentials)

I love this thread already.

Can this be 'Bombsfall Will Show you Indie Animation (and occasionally self-promote) and You Will Like it?' Because that's what I'm looking for.

And for the love of pete, Scott, come to one of these already.

Echoes

Where can I buy mp3's of your scores like this?

I'll keep the self-promotion to a minimum.

And at some point I will attend MinPenCon. SO CLOSE!

Hey you guys, check out this thing I found on Gizmodo.

It makes me sad to think that most of you probably haven't seen Kirsten Lepore and Garret Davis' Story From North America. You will be singing it afterward. And laughing. And holding hands. And kissing.

Something Left, Something Taken is by husband and wife team Tiny Inventions. Their style is hard to describe - handmade sets and characters, puppetry, stop motion, all brought together with digital elements and animation. If you are interested, they describe it here. Lots of pictures and video. Click it already.

Also, it was voiced by them, which I think is rad.

If you have 10 minutes to spare, I promise you that you will like it.

Seems a good day to post this one. Little Boat by Nelson Boles is just perfect. It's short, it's sweet, and it's something good to watch today.

Places Other People Have Lived by Laura Yilmaz is a great example of experimental animation in the service of autobiographical, personal narrative. It's the story of a house, but also the story of how people grow to inhabit the space inside it, and what those spaces mean after.

Please Say Something is my favorite of David O'reilly's short films. You might have heard of David, or seen his work around. He's a bit of a breakout star from the indie animation scene. He recently directed an episode of Adventure Time too, so you know he's all big time now. Beyond the artistry and storytelling, what makes Please Say Something interesting is that it was made using specific limitations as a way of exploring a kind of animation aesthetic he details here if that sort of thing interests you.

The Eagleman Stag is maybe my favorite short of recent years. It won a BAFTA, too! It was made by Mikey Please, who is a fantastic stop-motion animator from the UK. The story here is so great and so personal, and the animation - made mostly from bits of shaved-down foam - is so distinctive. I talked to Mikey on my blog last year about it too, if you're up for some extra credit.

He is currently working on a new film which looks equally great.

This is officially the Bombsfall Shows You Indie Animation / Other People Show You Bombsfall's Work thread.

I can live with that.

Are you guys digging any of these?

Fun fact: The Eagleman Stag, way up top, was on the shortlist for the Best Animated Short Oscar this year, but didn't get nominated. Now you know why a lot of us didn't like Paperman very much. Disney ruins everything.

Oh man, I used to watch indie animation shorts all the time, but grew disenchanted with some of the blogs/sources I used to read. Bombsfall, any recommendations on finding this stuff? Any blogs or news sites you follow on the scene?

I have a lot of stuff, including the score for Echoes, available for free download over at my Soundcloud page.

Ah cool I saw some links that were $35 or something and that seemed odd so I'll have to look again when I get home. Trying to access it by phone wasn't successful.

Dave Prosser is an animator that I have a crush on. I mean I have a crush on his work. Yes. He made Mountain after a residency stay in South Korea. You should watch it. It contains video games!

Favorite character: girlfriend.

This is less indie animation than indie puppetry, but you will not regret watching Don't Hug Me I'm Scared. You will be singing it all day.

Green is not a creative color.

Hey I hope I'm not stepping on Bombsfall's shoes by posting here but I happened to just randomly stumble upon this really cool collection of short Stories called Late Night Work Club presents GHOST STORIES. The tittle is a bit wordy but I think you'll like it anyways.

<- that was the last year of my life, probably the single proudest moment I've ever had as a person who makes things, etc. I'd love it if you guys checked it out.
