Italian scientists convicted of manslaughter for incorrectly predicting an earthquake

In all fairness, they predicted no earthquake, and then insisted they were right, as the signs of a real earthquake were showing. People died because these jokers insisted that they know what they are talking about, and that there is no earthquake.

Here's a link to an article with a couple more details (and links to other articles with more details). The scientists were commissioned by the government to do a report on whether the series of smaller earthquakes meant a big one was coming. Their report said that a series of minor earthquakes do not necessarily indicate that a major one is coming, but noted that earthquakes are unpredictable, and recommended that building codes be updated to be more safe in case of a major earthquake anyway. A government official decided this meant that there absolutely was no possibility of a major earthquake coming soon, and made a public announcement that to this effect. Less than a week later, a large earthquake happened, killing nearly 300 people, some of which reportedly decided to stay inside because of the public announcement. The scientists involved did know what they were talking about, but the government was more concerned about not causing a panic. If you want to blame someone, look at the government officials that heard only what they wanted to hear.

Fair enough. Some of the jokers insisted they knew what they were talking about. I'm sure the fallout from the whole trial will sort out who were the jokers and who were the innocent information generators.

The only joker was the government official who took "it does not necessarily mean it's coming, but you should prepare anyway" to mean "it's not coming, nothing needs to be done."He's going to jail too, which is somewhat deserved, but the 6 scientists shouldn't be punished for his actions.

I've heard of fantasy baseball, football, etc. but this is out of control...

If they are having sex, would that not make it a non-fantasy slut league?

Good question. I don't know how teenagers think nowadays...

"Sex."

That's about it.

The 11 new menu items are enough to satisfy the diminutive creatures’ six-meal-a-day habit, with options such as Shire Sausage, Bilbo’s Berry Smoothies, Build Your Own Hobbit Slam and Radagast’s Red Velvet Pancake Puppies.

What the flip is a pancake puppy?

This is a pancake puppy.

Those look like donut holes, which are neither pancake nor puppy.

Hushpuppy made with pancake batter?

Pretty much. Deep fried pancake batter. Which, come to think of it, probably isn't that different from donut holes.

Never had one myself. I actually can't remember the last time I ate at a Denny's.

I'm all for people improving their health, but am I the only one who thinks he looked better before? He looks more like a douchebag to me now...

The dude is wearing dogtags without actually being in the military. That screams douche.

Wow, judgmental much folks? He's dressed up in a costume trying to enhance the similarity to his EVE avatar, the guy's not running around daily in fake military gear. It's all for the sake of a picture.

I'm glad the guy found the inspiration to take control of his health. I'm even happier that he chose his own construct as a model instead of the slavish devotion to some popular culture icon that so many people choose to display.

People who play EVE likely already know but his blog is good reading when it deals with EVE events. He has an enjoyable writing style and deals with things in an unusually fair and unbiased manner for an EVE blogger. Very non-douche.

I only said that he looked like a douche. Of course, I know nothing of his personality. I just happen to think he looked more attractive before his transformation.

The semi-autonomous arms extend out in front of the body from the hips and are strapped to a backpack-like harness that holds the control circuitry. The prototype is the handiwork of Federico Parietti and Harry Asada of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who suggest that one of the first uses could be to help factory workers, or those with tricky DIY tasks to perform.
