Post a picture, argue with me!

The picture thread regularly turns into P&C, so why not just have a dedicated thread where the discussion from the picture thread can happen so they don't clog up that thread which bothers other people, AND the people having the discussion don't feel hampered in talking about those pictures when it gets P&C-ish? It also might not be a bad way to break out of the usual cycle of P&C topics: the latest discussion is about architecture and urban planning, for instance.

Pictures taken 100 years apart

The disappearance of intricacy and ornamentation is what is shocking.
I live in Ottawa, and have access to a lot of 19th century buildings. It's surprising how bland our buildings have become, comparatively.
The pride of owning a building is no longer in the building. It's in the bank account that the rent goes into. Looking at commercial properties.

In residential, it's a bit of a different situation, but the pride of ownership is not in the quality and durability of the building, but in the square footage and number of bathrooms.

We will no longer be able to take these sorts of pictures.
Our buildings are built for a 25 year life span now.

Try and find someone who can carve a limestone gargoyle today.

And what you're left with is, IMO, an ugly ugly building that, regardless of history, should be torn down and replaced.

I think a lot of the reason we don't focus on the building anymore is that we've got such better stuff to go *in* the building. The interiors of buildings are also much more bland, but that's because there's so many more options for what you can do with a room. What makes a room as more to do with the electronics you put in it or the appliances or even just the fixtures these days.

I'm probably the only one annoyed that those pictures aren't actually 100 years apart.

Those are all from Paris. Paris, London, Berlin, etc. have special character. They were regularly bombed and shelled to hell in the first half of the 20th century. The two Great Wars were a stark reminder that even buildings of stone are not permanent.

Nope, I also was miffed about that.

This isn't an argument, it's just contradiction.

No it isn't.

I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to argue with you anymore.

I don't see a lot of intricacy or ornamentation removed in those pictures. I see for example that the sidewalks and road have been resurfaced; that the windows that had ironwork in them now have anti-theft shutters which fit over the iron railings (which are indeed present in the corner building in the background). Several ornamental doors remain. The cut stonework has been painted over on one building, but it's unclear whether it was plastered as well. Ironwork and ornamental stone are gone from two, but in one (the restaurant) that's likely just fashion, and in the other (the horse head one) the building has clearly been rehabbed.

I'm actually surprised at the amount of brass and ironwork that's survived; as far as I can tell, all the windows still have it (some is likely concealed behind rolling shutters). I'd bet good money that someone from 1918 would view that street as over-advertised, somewhat run-down and cluttered, just as we view the modern one today. It's just that we don't have to smell the horse sh*t and rotting trash in the older street, or listen to the yelling vendors or the drunks hitting the bar and tobacco shops. I wonder why it's worse that the one building that is clearly derelict in 1918 has a business in 2013? And what does a "pasteurized butter" shop smell like, anyway? Probably about like the sandwich shop that replaced it, actually, unless they are pasteurizing on site, which would result in a fair amount of old milk smell from the process. Certainly the 2013 street is cleaner.

Seems like an unfair criticism.

If you look where the sign Z.N mod is located the sculptures have been removed and most of the intricacies along that row are also gone.

By sculptures, do you mean the signage for the defunct livery stable (or whatever it was that was there before)? Because those aren't random building curlicues, those are part of a specific shop storefront.

Of course the location is Portland.

Somewhere, there is a craigslist ad for a guy looking to trade his well dressed muscular friend -- the type who voted for Obama and is pro marriage equality, but also likes his SUV and his guns -- for someone who understands spelling and grammar.

Edit: Related: If you're single, the best thing you can do (besides have good teeth) is communicate properly.

Jiminy. Suddenly all the jokes about British people having bad teeth make sense. It's a wonder I got any action over here at all, especially given how low down 'accent' is on that list. That's my frickin' trump card.

On the topic of ridiculous craiglist ads, how about renting a closet in Brooklyn for $1350/month?

I've paid almost that much for 600 square feet. I think they did their math a little wrong, though.

Broker-ese, it's also how crazy neighborhood names (RAMBO, BoCoCa) are made up.

It took me a while to figure out what SoBro was, so I created this...

My first dorm room was only about that big. You can do it. I managed to fit a 32 inch TV into that bad boy.

For some amusing political pictures, I tend to enjoy a Facebook group called "Sexy Atheists": https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sexy-...

There's also a group called "Working Class Atheists" whose political images tend to be slightly lower brow, but pretty damn funny sometimes: https://www.facebook.com/workingclas...

Shenanigans. There are no photos of me at Sexy Atheists. And I brought sexy back.

So join the group and fix it.

See also the fictional Dowistrepla.

The only neighborhood like that in Seattle that I'm aware of is SoDo (South of Downtown)
