Company of Heroes 2 - From who? Ze Germans?

ok, first up, anyone who needs an invite to the CoH Steam group, let me know

PM'd

I've played about 5 MP matches so far, this game is fun. 4vs4 is *crazy*. I'll try to be around on weekends, maybe can get a game against one of you guys.

I toyed around with the Russians a little more in VS AI last night. Its nice to be able to reinforce your other more expensive squads with the cheap conscripts. It was the only way I could keep my AT guns alive.

I know in my head this option exists and is there, and I see the button on screen, but still always forget to use it

Another fun thing to do with Conscript squads; they can pick up 3 panzerschrecks.

Blah, sorry couldn't make it. Having a newborn baby has really screwed up daddy's playtime.

Yeah that'll happen. No worries sir, do whatcha gotta do.

I got in a couple vs AI games and kind of toyed with units I hadn't messed with before. I think I understand the intended uses of the cheapy russian assault gun and a couple other things now.

I'm still pretty mystified by the Stug on the German side though. It doesn't seem to have any of the early power or utility it had in vanilla CoH. Seems like a waste unless you completely catch someone with their pants down and get it out when they have absolutely zero AT of any kind.

That's because they upped the cost of it and it's now crap. Well, it is better than what it was, but it's too expensive for what it is.

Is there a new coupon code for Greenmangaming? I sent a recent one onto a friend but it had expired.

Not yet. But keep an eye out and they'll more than likely release another one.

Also, played some more and I'm actually enjoying it more. Like just the little things like the smoke effects. I'm starting to see the differences and I'm pretty close to pre-ordering. So far best I can get is $45 at greenmangaming. Going to keep looking and see what I can find.

Thanks for keeping my undefeated record unblemished

Ugh, I forgot about that too haha

Didn't know that was how reinforcing worked, could be super useful!

The big thing I have yet to get used to is that some squads can't be raised to full health even if they're back by the base and fully reinforced.

I'm pretty sure that was the same way in the first game. I thought you always needed med stations to heal your wounded soldiers.

It's one of those small details that got sussed out in the combat engine for Dawn of War 2. It's still the closest point of reference I have to getting setup in this game that I have.

Actually you can heal them. If you play the Germans, then build a bunker and make it a medic bunker. They'll heal anyone around it. Alternatively if you are Russian, there is an upgrade on the main base which sends out medics to heal.

I actually miss the old German medic station that would pick up your dead/wounded and form a new squad when enough wounded were collected.

I'm on the Steam group now, so if you see me playing just hit me up for random game where I can suck as I never played any proper competitive multiplayer RTS.

They're doing a "Sunday Night Fights" livestream of I guess 1 CoH2 match right now on their Twitch.tv channel. I think it's just one match. I honestly don't know the gameplan. Gonna watch though.

*Sounds like they're starting with a 1v1 and then jumping into some 2v2 games from a tournament hosted on the beta.

Thin_J, I noticed the stream on Twitch also. Watching now. Super interesting.

I'd like to join the Steam group too and get some games going with you guys. Hit me up, I'm +r0b0ts+ on steam. http://steamcommunity.com/id/virginm...

This is the first time in my life I'm watching an RTS stream on twitch, cool

Anyone about to play now or a bit later?

That's strange. I always thought of CoH as one of the less micro intensive RTS's.

But maybe I just did not use it, and that is why I lost.

COH and COH2 are definitely "slower" games than SC2. I find I have no chance in multiplayer in SC2. It's all about actions per minute. But thats not the case with COH and COH2. You can take your time and its more important to make the correct decisions rather than pure speed in your decisions. I think I hit level 30 on the beta so far and am having a pretty reasonable win ratio.

Also this article just came out. First info on the single player and co-op missions. This "theater of war" mode looks very interesting.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...

Anthony Gallegos has a video talking about and showing the above Theater of War mode up on IGN right now.

Seems like it could be a cool mode.

Damn, I was all fired up to play this game tonight and I get "Failed to start game (missing executable)." The beta is over

FYI: I noticed a post on the beta forums that ATI did release an update for their "legacy" cards specifically for COH 2 (4/29). Good on them for fixing the crashing issue and good on Relic for pressuring them to do so. This applies to low end 5xxx series cards and all older cards.

So does that mean it disappears from our steam lists too, or am I going to have Company of Heroes 2 beta in my list forever?

Looks like it's still in my list.. there's gonna be an open beta coming up before release (even though this one was pretty open anyway..) so I'm gonna keep it installed for that.

I miss it already

Back to some CoH Blitzkrieg mod in mean time

Cool indeed. Is there any co-op besides those handful of Theater of War missions?

They haven't really said much. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a co-op campaign like Dawn of War 2 but with more units. That would be full of awesomeness.

I don't really care that much, but that would be great bait to get my few fellow European Goodjers like Haakon, WanderingTaoist and dejanzie to buy CoH2

Sorry to see beta end, I'm away for couple of days and was already planning to come back home to test a few strategies.
(BTW recent favourite: conscript infantry spam, then taking over anything that dead German squads left (especially mortars, AT guns, tanks).)

I was briefly looking into that last night but didn't have the motivation to test the beta version with my "COH (New Steam Version)". Are you using the mod with the original install of COH or the one that was just released on Steam?

I ended up playing a comp stomp on the vanilla and a few observations just coming off of the beta.

-The graphics in COH2 are better but not that much better. It's mostly just high res textures and a few more polygons. The original actually looks crisper but less gritty. The weather effects and much better looking terrain have a bit to do with this.

-The interface is cleaner and easier to read in the original game. The icons are simpler and have a nice black bordering around them. I just find it easier to navigate. This includes the mini-map.

-In the original you can zoom out slightly to get a better view of the battlefield. I hope they have a similar zoom in 2 for the final release.

-I forgot how atrocious the AI was in the original. COH2 has made major step forwards on this front. There are still some weird hiccups but I have yet to see them just blob into a corner of the map. I had a AI Brit on my team that just refused to build anything or capture points. Also in COH2 they are faster to respond to your orientation requests.

-I still like the strategic value of the first games doctrines vs the new generals. Just having the choices of what your investing your points into adds another layer of complexity.

It may seem like I'm knocking the second game but I'm really looking forward to the coming open beta to see what else they let us try. I feel like allot of my complaints existed in the original as well but were cleaned up after some patches. I can't stress enough how much better the AI is from enemy strategy, unit pathing, to your individual units responding to your commands. It makes the game feel allot less clunky.

I am using the original install still. I will have to switch over to the CoH New steam version soon. Blitzkrieg mod really is a top notch mod that adds tons of new units and puts the game in hardcore mode. Running infantry into a machine gun is pretty much insta kill for example.
I highly recommend it!

OK, cool. I'm going to give it a try. Does it work well with co-op comp stomps?
