Come fellow knife wielders, we must chat.

Since we already have a gun thread, I figured we might as well have a knife one as well.

I'm currently carrying a Benchmade Balisong Weehawk.

You never know when you'll need to peel an orange or something.

I had one in college. I ended up accidentally getting stabbed in the arm by my roommate. College was fun.

Those oranges can sneak up on you. You want to be ready.

I like this one, the KA-BAR TDI.

They make it with a full serrated blade as well. It was designed as an emergency weapon and tool for law enforcement, which can be drawn very quickly (it uses a friction sheath) with a solid grip. Also useful for cutting through seatbelts and the like. It's also totally legal to carry in most states.

Lob,

That's pretty similar to the CRKT Bear Claw I own.

When I'm at work I carry around a cheapo folder that the handle is shaped into a carabiner clip that I hook onto my belt loop. It's just for opening boxes and whatnot, but it's handy having it right there.

When I'm out in the wider world I usually carry a Camillus Heat.
IMAGE(http://www.jw-custom.com/C2335b_1.jpg)
Though I haven't been carrying it as much since the pocket clip broke off. Camillus closed it's doors a couple years ago, so getting a replacement clip might be kind of tricky. I might be able to find one from another manufacturer that fits, but I haven't looked very hard.

I used to carry around a Kershaw folder, but I switched to the Camillus and I've been very happy with it since.

I'm not a huge fan of butterflies or the little palm blades. I like a good tactical folder with a clip to hang on IBA, like this one.

Ah, so not the place to speak of functional knives?

Anyhow. Probably the handiest knife in my collection is my folding box cutter. Great for opening Amazon boxes, that deadly packaging plastic on electronics.

Followed by my army surplus pocket knife. Blade, can opener, bottle opener, leather punch. Here is how it goes-crack beer with bottle opener, poke hole in cigar, light cigar. And then enjoy.

Also handy, my 3 inch Smith and Wesson tactical folding knife. Just a solid one handed folding knife.

I fully expect Paleo to start another topic soon called 'Come, fellow RPG aficionados, we must chat'. And I will be very disappointed if it contains any discussions of Final Fantasy XIII. :-p

I dunno. I'm down for functional knives as well.

My Leatherman Juice is the knife I carry with me everywhere, always.

When I feel the need to strap on a knife, I've got a cheap 6" tanto fixed blade knife.

My everyday pocket knife is a Benchmade Osborne:

Can I just say that Stiletto switchblades are actually beautiful, and that most if not everything in this thread being illegal in Canada is the real crime?
IMAGE(http://theaxemen.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/milano-stiletto-switchblade-black.jpg)

I keep this around for opening boxes and things.

It's a great, simple little knife.

I keep thinking I should get a burly lock blade, but it's hard to justify, because my tiny-ass Leatherman Micra is so damn useful.

IMAGE(http://www.leathermanmultitools.co.uk/images/Micra.JPG)

It's on my keyring, so it goes everywhere with me, and serves all my needs, everything from helping my day-care charges bring down a broken branch to taking care of my cuticles. Once a friend offered "I have nail-clippers, if you don't want to use, you know, a weapon for that." She quickly acknowledged my confusion was justified.

I love the shape of that blade. I want to see a giant version in an anime.

I carry an older model 5.11. I tried googling to find a picture but the model name escapes me at the moment. Nothing fancy about it. just a sharp blade (that a buddy of mine occasionally sharpens for me) and a clip.

edit: 5.11 This isn't it exactly, but its the closest of the new models that mine resembles.

This thread's been up for an hour and no one's made a knifey-spoony joke?

While I'm no longer in my "look what I can carry that I could totally kill you with" younger years, I still never go anywhere without a utility blade. For the last couple of years my constant companion has been the Leatherman Skeletool CX that my wife bought me as an anniversary gift.

It's a wonderful tool that replaced the Leatherman Wave that had been wearing holes in my pockets with its excessive weight for the prior few years. The Wave is now in permanent residence in my truck.

I also keep a Leatherman Micra on my keychain, and an older Gerber folding knife with a serrated blade that's for cutting things (Cardboard, carpet, etc.) that I don't want to ruin one of my good blades on.

I have a couple of Gerbers, neither of which I've paid for. One is a Gerber Gator, which a buddy gave me after he got a new hunting knife:

The other is a Gerber Tanto automatic, which was given to my wife by a friend:

Both are great tools. We take them both out into the woods with us when we go backcountry camping, and they've been great.

Where do you guys actually carry them around?

Everywhere I've been, from college to work, has draconian measures on any self defense weapons

Agreed. The little $10 folding utility knives are incredibly handy.

I also have a CRKT Mirage that's served me well for the last 10 years or so. The only problem is that it's fully serrated (I wanted half serrated, but all they had at the time was full serrations) and it really needs to be sharpened. Sharpening serrated knives is not something I'm really willing to try at home.

That's why I went with the un-serrated edge on mine. Sharpening a serrated kinfe is a pain in the ass, and I can't say I've really missed the serrations as long as the edge is nice and sharp.

A knife in the hands of someone not trained to use it is a poor defense, and a can of mace would serve most people better. That said:

Step 1: Make sure you are complying with all applicable local, state, and federal laws regarding any weapon you may be carrying.

Step 2: Do not tell anyone you are carrying it, ever. Your friends do not need to know, neither does your boss, your co-worker, or your personal psychic.

If nobody knows your defense exists, then any "draconian measures" are irrelevant. If you ever need to use it to save yourself from serious bodily injury or death, then losing a job or getting booted out of school should be a minor concern at best.

I'm not even going to lie, I am as far removed from a survivalist as you can get while still somehow surviving, and any situation calling for self defense is more likely to be met by me sprinting away. Knives have always been really pretty letter/box openers for me. Also a great way to accessorize. Least masculine knife-wielder ever?

Good for you! Statistics show you're far more likely end up alive and well while Mr. Survival is in the morgue.

The problem is if you ever get arrested or searched for something unrelated.

That skeletool looks like more than enough to kill someone. Maybe even of its own volition. I would lock that thing up if I were you.

My Leatherman Wave has served me well. Unfortunately I never picked up a sheath that would fit on my duty belt. Acquired a Sog multitool that did fit though. For a clip folding blade I picked up a CRKT m-16 which fell apart on me within a year. Ended up with a KaBar TDI instead of picking up another clip knife. Found it was great for many utilitarian purposes, and enjoyed the quick access it provided.

Yeah, I had a micra as my "do everything" pocket knife until I decided I wanted a few more things on it! So I upgraded to the Juice.

You skipped Step 1.

Cut a hole in the box?

I gave exact same Camilus to my cousin as a gift 5 years ago! He collects knives. I tried to make him reciprocate by giving me his original Russian paratrooper issue of Osa-2... unsuccessfully.
