PAX East 2013!

So Mad Catz is having a pre-PAX Thursday night party. At first I was like "Oooh!", and then I saw it costs $50 to get in and was like "Oh...".

A look at their website reveals that this is a company I expected to fade into obscurity after no one needed glitchy piece of crap memory cards anymore, but they've got pro teams and an emphasis on tournaments. Guess they just refocused?

Yeah, IMO, it really turned around for them in 2009 when Street Fighter IV came out and MadCatz cornered the market in "Fight sticks" - controllers designed to act and feel like arcade cabinet controls - using name brand arcade parts for that matter. They show up to pretty much every major fighting game event these days and keep coming out with new sticks. They're not as dominant in the market these days, but they've done very well for themselves.

I have no idea if I can meet up with you lot. The 23rd-24th are perilously close to my wife's due date for Mateo 2.0. If they don't induce, I might be able to sneak out for some games and beers, but if they do, I'm out.

That's another reason I'm uncertain of going to such a party. Aside from being $50 and located at a venue that's probably loud with sh*tty music even when there aren't video games to play, it seems like it's going to be a place loaded with all these pro-gamer sorts and I usually can't stand those folks. The only thing that could make me go is if that $50 means all drinks are free, because I can easily drink more than $50 worth.

I'll probably wait around and see what other parties come up. Destructoid is probably going to have a meet-up, and Sanshee may be doing a party as well. As last year most of this stuff was scheduled for Saturday, it is actually more convenient that the GWJ slap and tickle is on Friday instead. Last year I tried to make time for the Extra Credits meet-up before GWJ and in the end I just didn't get enough time to spend at either.

Re: Stan buttons, there is no charge. I refuse money for them, they are a gift to like minded fellows. (It was also a stipulation from Certis, so don't get any ideas !) I will hand them out to whoever ask for them from me util I run out. I will ask that if you got one last year please don't ask for another to let others have a chance to get them. I'll be living in the tabletop area most of the time close to the flag.

I may require the shouting of "Wiener Bomb" to get one.

So you're saying I should shower you with nip bottles...

I will gladly shout Weiner Bomb for a Stan button. Or just in general because it makes me giggle.

If my memory serves me correct, that is how I met Tigerbill and Tanglebones at the first PAXEast.

What's the temperature going to be like around pax time this year in Boston?

Anywhere between 30 degrees and 80 degrees, with upwards of 40 degree swings between night and day.

Seriously.

Usually its in the 50s and 60s, with 40s in the overnight.

But we have had snow in March, as well as heat waves.

Wind chill can drop things to single digits. The average temperature in March is actually 37.5, not 50s and 60s, but as mentioned, we've been bucking trends for the past few years.

Bring a sweater, a fleece, and some decent shoes. You'll be fine no matter what, with those.

And bring a hat. The first year we went I swear my ears almost got frostbite. Brought a hat last year and my ears were happy.

Since Boston is right on the coast, there's almost always wind. It should be more pronounced near the convention center as it's like 2500 feet away from the ocean. +1 to bringing a winter hat, they're already on clearance up here so you might have to settle for a Red Sox hat if you're looking for one on the fly. I recommend bringing a scarf too, but I have seen some nifty PAX East scarves from previous events.

Quoted for truth. Especially if you're going to venture off con grounds, be aware that the areas of Boston with large skyscrapers (like around South Station) are severe wind tunnels. Even on days where you can get by with a fleece, South Station and Haymarket area will freeze you to the bone when the wind blows.

Gonna need to buy some earmuffs I guess. I like my hat but it doesn't cover ears

Fwiw, the pax scarves are really cute, but not particularly warming

I will say that the Brotherhood of the Leaf gathering last year (Saturday night, after the concerts, to smoke cigars outside by the giant sign) was just brutal. Just above freezing with a nasty wind.

First time in a while I've had my cigars just go out while I'm halfway through.

This, and they're also a limited run. Getting one can be difficult.

Hey Mom (or anyone else that knows), do you know if there are yearly PAX infant onesies the same way there are yearly PAX t-shirts?

I don't know, but I don't think so. I can ask one of the merch gang. I'll let you know when I hear back.

I do know they have this for you: http://store.penny-arcade.com/produc...

You can also search the store for "onesie" and get some other options.

That's a good one. I got this for her first day at PAX: http://store.penny-arcade.com/products/eaten-by-bats-baby-creeper

That's cute. I wish they had some Twisp and Catsby ones, though.

Don't over-spend on a hat. $10 on a wool hat, $10-$15 on some gloves, and you'll be outfitted the way most New Englanders are. Unless you're from Maine.

They're hardcore in Maine.

Camo Jorts is my "Big Country" tribute band.

TRUFAX

In Maine, they wear jorts year round. 20 degrees below, snow up to your nipples, and jorts. Camo patterned jorts.

They may be hardcore in Maine (and believe me, I have Mainiac blood running through my veins), but I think Boston's got them beat in stupid.

Well, now you've asked and now I've seen this image. I'm holding you personally responsible for any lasting damage after the eyebleach.

Back in the fingerlakes I used to see both Jorts and Polar Bear clubs. Ne'r a crossroad of the two though.
