PAX East 2013!

Please bring Dune! It is the one regret I had about PenguinCon - missing out on Dune.

So Mike/Gabe did an IAMA on Reddit today.

And Khoo revived his account from his IAMA last year and jumped in on some comments.

A question came up on PAX tickets

RobertKhoo wrote:
Hey, Robert here - We've looked at the ticket issues etc, and what it comes down to is that more people want to come to PAX than we have tickets. Lotteries, pre-pre-reg, different release dates - none of these things will solve the fundamental problem that there are about 20-30k more people that want to come to PAX than we have space for.

We can approach it by either increasing supply or decreasing demand, and the latter isn't something we're terribly interested in. On the supply side, adding additional shows (Australia) helps, as does adding a 4th day for Prime, but even those things I don't think will be enough to satisfy everyone. Know that we're trying to do everything we can though. Sorry!

*ahem* So what new boardgames are people looking forward to checking out this year?

I'd also like to check out Spartacus just to see what all the fuss is about. I already mentioned a couple games from Plaid Hat, but I'm hoping RGG will be there to demo the next Race for the Galaxy expansion and/or the dice-building spinoff. Maybe the Pandemic 2nd expansion if Z-Man is there again. I don't think there's much else I'm interested in other than expansions for games we already own, so it'll likely be a lot of checking the booths to see what's interesting this year.

I am curious to see if there will be any Android: Netrunner or Ascension tournaments this year, although that might be more of a time commitment than I want.

I got to watch some other people play Cyclades (sp?) at a board-game night, and that definitely looks interesting.

The trick is we are flying this year so I will have to figure which games I can/want to transport.

This must take priority in the packing process; in fact leave Leland and use his seat for the game.

I'll second X-Wing Minis. That's easily the top of my list of new games that I'd like to try but haven't.

Finally got a game of Eclipse in tonight, and I'd be totally down for a 9-way 4x fest

Seconded. I also want to play some more Wiz-war. Not new but I don't own it and it was a blast last year

I'd be down for a dune game, but I'd need to schedule it, probably for Friday. Runs 45 min a player if I recall?

Count me in too. But bring Leland, Lillie will need someone to play with.

I have yet to have a game with new players go that fast... If everyone studied before they came then we might have a hope to get done that fast. It all depends a lot on how everyone plays too. Does the Harkonnen player blow up himself and his team? Then the game may go a bit faster. Either way I am in and Friday sounds good to me. My flight gets in around 7am so we should be there at a good time.

I have not gotten the mini's yet, I am planning to order a few when they get the base set back in stock at my distributors mid Feb.

We have also decided to ditch Leland in Gettysburg at his grandparents. Given his mobility he will prevent Amanda from having any fun and over bring him on a plane we have made arrangements. So we are gonna drive to Gettysburg and abandon him there with my in-laws. Hopefully Amanda will make it through the weekend.

Oh I've played (grin). It's been a while, but I've played a lot. A quick scan of the rules and it's all come back to me. My recollection is it really comes down to how much time people spend away from the table scheming. If everyone peer pressures folks into acting fast and impulsively during negotiations (grin) ...

Totally understandable. This year will probably be Lillie's first and last for some time. Amanda is free to kidnap her whenever she needs a baby fix.

We have house ruled no away from table talk because it keeps things moving. I guess I also shouldn't have said I have never had it go that short. I had two 6 player games finish in about 3 hours. Both were wicked good traitor pulls that flipped the tables for the win, but yeah. We can make it happen. Everyone must study before the game and then a quick refresh and we can be on to the game. I have had rules take up to an hour with a couple groups...

Would this help?

I have a very strict rule at cons (sometimes including Rabbitcon). I don't play complex games where someone hasn't read/watched the rules. There are exceptions, but not many. I can teach a few complex games EXTREMELY well. 7 Wonders. Agricola. Maybe 1 or 2 more. Other than that, I will hand you my ipad and headphones, point you to a video, and come back in 20 minutes.

So, let me be clear. I would love to sit down to a game of Dune at noon on Friday in the boardgame hall with 3-5 other players who have either played before, or studied up HARD and expect to get steamrolled by the other players. It's not a game you sit down and learn. It's the ASL of boardgames.

[EDIT: That's a really good video. doesn't hit the subtleties, but it definitely gets you ready.]

So I ordered more Stan buttons for this year. 40 of them. They are a bit smaller (2.25" vs 3") because there was a good deal on artscow.com again...

I have been debating on if I need 10 buttons of my forum icon too or not.

Has the flag been secured by someone attending yet?

Guys guys guys guys guys guys guys guys guys guys

Harpoon just opened a Beer Hall today, open from 12p to 11p on Thursdays/Fridays and 11a to 11p on Saturdays.

Flag in hand.

I'll be wearing my 2012 Stan button with pride!

Pretty much this. Let me know where to find you so I can throw dollars at you in a respectable fashion.

Can someone tell me what a Stan button is, pretty please?

I x-posted to the Boston Area GWJers as well, so we can discuss this more in detail over there.

Thought it was also worth-while in this thread, since the beer hall at Harpoon winds up being one of the closest bars to the BCEC outside Whiskey Priest or crossing over Fort Point (or spending a metric sh*t-ton at a hotel bar or top-shelf restaurant (seriously, I love Del Frisco's, but $15 for a martini is crazy)).

Re: Stan buttons, there is no charge. I refuse money for them, they are a gift to like minded fellows. (It was also a stipulation from Certis, so don't get any ideas !) I will hand them out to whoever ask for them from me util I run out. I will ask that if you got one last year please don't ask for another to let others have a chance to get them. I'll be living in the tabletop area most of the time close to the flag.

I may require the shouting of "Wiener Bomb" to get one.

Agreed, the brewery is crazy close (assuming the weather isn't bitter cold and you don't mind a 10-15 min. walk). I'm sure PAX probably doesn't want to do any sort of "official" thing with them (I think they want to stay somewhat "family friendly" and BCEC seems to have a Boston Beer contract), but I'm surprised that Harpoon hasn't done any sort of promotion to drag some of the PAX crowd their way during the weeekend.

So Mad Catz is having a pre-PAX Thursday night party. At first I was like "Oooh!", and then I saw it costs $50 to get in and was like "Oh...".

A look at their website reveals that this is a company I expected to fade into obscurity after no one needed glitchy piece of crap memory cards anymore, but they've got pro teams and an emphasis on tournaments. Guess they just refocused?

The Event

You're invited to experience Mad Catz Unveiled, an exclusive pre-PAX East event! Get hands-on time with pre-release titles before PAX, one-on-one experience with the Mad Catz gaming team, meet industry insiders, and socialize with the pro gaming ladies of LT3.

Play!
We're hooking up with some of the biggest publishers at PAX to bring you a stack of the latest games to play. Don't wait in line; come play them first at Mad Catz Unveiled!

Explore!
Want to check out our latest hardware? We'll have all our new gear for you to test and maybe a few surprises that you haven't seen before!

With top-notch talent, great games, and a party atmosphere, all that's missing is you! And no one goes home empty-handed from Mad Catz Unveiled.

I'd like to do a better job of meeting new people this year and getting out to some of these parties, but having to pay $50 and then reading that description makes me uncertain. It's like "Pay $50 for our marketing gimmick at a loud and noisy club!"
