PAX East 2013!

What they all said. Tabletop area is a ton of fun, and you can play actual, complete games without needing to wait in line for over two hours. Plus if you like a tabletop game enough, you might even be able to buy a copy to take home with you. Just look for the GWJ flag (we still have a flag, right?) and I'm sure someone will get you going in a game or three

Which isn't to say the video game expo hall isn't fun, but unless you're going off the beaten path you're going to spend a good chunk of time waiting in line...

Right now the flag is with oilypenguin, but it'll probably make its way back to someone coming to PAX East by March

Hey Rabbit, are you guys considering another Panel this year? I was late to last year's, but it was very enjoyable and made for a good Podcast.

I'm excited

Wound up getting a room way back when at the Langham. Last year we did the Seaport, and I would have done it again. Will keep checking back to see if rooms open up and switching reservations.

We lucked out at the Seaport, and were high enough that the CURSE party didn't keep us up.

I imagine we'll submit a panel. We have a long time to go yet before panels need to be in.

Has anyone heard anything about the impact on the expo hall or the show in general due to GDC starting the day after? Just noticed the IGF is saying they start on the 25th, and if that means a lower turnout of indie developers at PAX (especially the MegaBooth) I'm going to be sad.

That's a tough one. I wonder which has been more successful for indie companies, though? GDC and similar events are important for getting the attention of publishers, but PAX ends up getting your game in front of actual consumers that may have never even heard of it and gets the word of mouth spreading.

FYI, I will be bringing my son with me, just for the day on Saturday. Mostly it will be a "tour of the spectacle" but everyone has to be SUPER NICE TO HIM or I will rain fire down upon you all. Grin.

Like it's even a worry. But in all seriousness, any suggestions from folks who've gone with kids before? I expect him to be exhausted pretty quick!

First, don't be surprised if his stamina amazes you. I brought my son last year, and he is a few years older than yours, but he did totally fine. I don't know how much your son likes really thick crowds, but mine was pretty turned off by them: he loved the exhibition hall, but could only stomach it for short bursts, due to the number of people pressed into one area. My son is a total geek-in-training, so he was perfectly content to hang out in the Board Game area a lot, I'm not sure how your son would feel about that. Just be careful to always have a meetup spot, because it is almost certain that you will be separated at some point, and losing track of a kid in a place with so many people is daunting, to put it mildly. On the other hand, it is a great place to let the leash out a lot; you can leave him to look at something on his own, and find a place to monitor him without being seen.

I was wondering what happened to Atras's finger the last time we met up.

Now if only there was a specifically marked location in the tabletop space....

Worst/best cosplay for a father and son?

I wasn't sure I'd have money to go this year, so I waited about 4 hours from when I considered getting a 3 day pass. I missed it by about 45 minutes and ended up having to get 3 one-days.

Hooray PAX!

Yeah, that worked pretty well for a grand-scale "In case you get lost" meet up, but I meant the more common and more minor "I want to congratulate this guy on their new game and then he looked at Natural Selection 2 and I don't see him and there are 3000 people in this room and what will I do.... oh there he is" situations.

Do we have a plan for the flag and how to get it there this year? I saw it at PenCon but am not sure where it went after the weekend.

Purchased airfare the other night. It was a lot cheaper than when I had checked on it back in October.

Bleh! I don't want to know that ; )
Glad you were able to score a good deal, though.

Depending on your airline and how you booked your flights, you might be able to rebook without fees...just sayin'

Nah, I declined the rate protection plan that would allow for that. It is what it is. I bought the security of knowing I got the ticket for the time and date I wanted.

Doh.

In either case, excited to meet more goodjers in a few months

Concert lineup is live for those interested. Not much different from last year in fact.

Friday’s got:
VGO
Those Who Fight
Protomen

Saturday will feature:
Sam Hart
Frontalot
Jonathan Coulton
Paul and Storm

I JUST got Those Who Fight's EP at MAGFest, so I'm totally stoked about being at the concerts this year. I may have skipped last year for some reason I do not recall.

I have both Protomen albums (not their Queen covers, as when I heard them perform Under Pressure in West Chester it sounded like, well, Under Pressure), and I still can't get into them off the album. They're like the KISS of video game culture music. Great live, but their studio recordings are meh.

I'll possibly be finding other things to do on Saturday.

I'll agree that Protomen just melt faces live, but I find The Father of Death to be a very technically well produced album. Just sitting down and listening to song after song, you're able to pick out some over arching themes - the heart beat, the hammer, the crowd - that are just very moving. I "hear" these when I see the show live, but I lose the thread some times.

I'm excited for Those Who Fight. Haven't heard them, and while I'll miss Metroid Metal, it'll be nice to have another rock opera band in the line up.

I need to get MAGfest into my con rotation. I only hear good things about it. One of the podcasts I listen to said "our worst thing to say about MAGfest is that they use wrist bands instead of badges." If that's all they've got to complain about, it's gotta be a good time.

I'm not 100% sure if I'm hitting the concerts as much this year. Since last PAX East I've seen JoCo and VGO (which I think is local anyways) at least once. Might be spending a bit more time in tabletop this year.

Also, I forgot to mention that some ex-Masshole name Clifford is giving the keynote this year.

My goal is to spend a LOT more time in tabletop this year. Not doing a big suite of my own or anything, so want to be more outwardly social.

Yay for tabletop!

Last year I ended up skipping the concerts in favor of tabletop and console free play, and it worked out great. I might check out the acts I haven't seen before, but I'll probably be spending a lot more time in tabletop as well.

Shop, you talking about VGO@BSO? That was a killer show Can't wait for the Kickstarter album to drop.

I'm planning to spend more time in tabletop this year as well - but still hitting the concerts both nights. I have a huge Protomen fanboy living inside me (I should probably get that checked out with my doctor...), and the wife can never get enough JoCo and Paul & Storm.
