Streamers with jobs

So glad more folks are getting into streaming and recording! It's so fun!

I don't think there are any restrictions on what, to do with streaming, is talked about. So, go wild I tend to find the time-zone difference really makes it hard to catch you guys when you are streaming, having only managed to briefly catch Veloxi a few times back when he was on Twitch.

Either way, you should add your Twitch to the icons on your profile :)

Don't really do Twitch..... yet. Maybe I'll branch out one day. I'm actually wondering how hard it would be to Stream to Twitch and then record the video using OBS and uploading that up to YouTube Gaming. Cause I really love how YouTube Gaming automatically posts my videos to my channel.

Twitch has an export function to YouTube, but it's inconsistent and one of the big reasons I stopped using Twitch my own self. The latest OBS WILL let you both record locally and stream at the same time, but it's a bit CPU intensive.

Oh and Omni, you're welcome to join us over on YouTube.

I keep flip-flopping between wanting to just commit to recording and uploading to youtube or streaming. Right now I've landed on Recording for mon-fri uploads and then streaming on the weekends.

My biggest roadblock right now is getting graphics. My wife is great at that sort of thing but every time I mention her making me some icons/banners/etc she is non-committal.

Yeah, that's kind of my biggest concern with it to be honest. I don't have the strongest machine out there. I took would like to commit to just one, but it would be nice to get some viewers from both sides. Really torn about the whole time. I know Twitch is still a giant in the game streaming market. It's hard to ignore it.

I definitely understand that. Luckily for me, I know that stuff, so that is a BIG thing to come in handy for me.

I'm not that familar with OBS (I use Xsplit), but is there an option to produce a file in a recording folder that you can then upload to YouTube?

When I was streaming regularly that's what I ended up doing. Xsplit would create a local file of whatever I ended up streaming to Twitch, then once the show was over, I'd do some light editing and upload that file to YouTube.

So basically I'd just look for any option that would allow OBS to create a local file of the recording at the same time you're streaming to Twitch.

Yeah, I believe it does, though I haven't tried it out. That's what we were talking about, and wondering how hard it would be on my machine to do both.

My machine is a bit older as well, and when I've accidentally recorded and streamed at the same time, I didn't really notice any issues BUT I didn't like it.

YMMV, but in my experience I noticed no difference in performance when having both going at the same time.

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to say that I wasn't really running with a high end computer at the time, either.

Thanks, Veloxi, but I'll probably just stick with Twitch I also have really no interest in making a youtube channel, so I guess that's a benefit to me in terms of working out all the interactivity of differing services.

Anyway, it's far too early in streaming for me to really have a huge opinion either way, right now I'm just happy I have about 5 viewers per night \o/

I'm saying you could VISIT me silly goose.

OHHHH. I might just do that, if your streaming times match up with my viewing times, which, oddly enough, are almost exclusively while I'm at work

Does simply subscribing to your channel notify me when you go live?

I think so, but I always have SOMETHING Tuesdays at Thursdays at 5:30 PM Pacific, plus random other streams when I can fit them in.

I might have to try it out one night and see how it goes with streaming and recording.

You got nothing to lose.

Just finished up streaming for the night, had 11 concurrent viewers, my highest so far! Only two new follows though, so I gotta work on that bit.

It's a slow burn, don't stress about it.

Yeah man. It's not going to blow up overnight. Just keep plugging away and don't stress about getting huge numbers right away. Just have fun with the followers you do have and keep making sure you're enjoying it yourself!

Oh hey I'm in no rush, even if there was only one person watching it would be worth it. This entire adventure is entirely for the fun of it. I went in with zero expectations, and if it all fritters away and I stop streaming, then I've still gained, because of the experience so far of setting things up, and the people I've 'met' in just these two weeks.

Wrong thread.

I can't stream anything due to this bandwith limit and slow limited satellite internet. Besides, wouldn't want to have my house SWATed like that one guy.

Yup, that was exactly my experience with streaming. Went in with a basic idea, had a few people watch and interact which was a blast, and I completely loved the experience of setting everything up. Eventually life got in the way of streaming with any regularity, but it can be a hell of lot of fun. Glad to hear you're having fun so far!

Yeah, having fun is the big goal, so keep at it! Yay!

11 viewers! Nice! I've only had one, and it's a close friend of mine, but like you said, it's mostly for the fun of it. I know I'll never be BIG TIME, but that doesn't matter to me, I just love playing video games.

I think a lot of it comes down to the game you are playing. Some people seem to try and keep up with the latest releases, hoping to get in on the hype - The problem with that, I feel, is that the major players are also going to be playing the latest and greatest, so you're suddenly competing against the big boys. Not that it's a competition, but still, to have at least somebody watching is the whole point of this, right?

I mainly play ESO. There aren't a huge number of regular streamers with above 1 viewer across all platforms, and although there are a lot less overall viewers of that game to spread between them, there's a slightly higher chance that randoms will pop by, especially once you get 3 or 4 people in. Out of that 11, I probably previously knew 3, which gives you a good start to other passers by. A streamer I visit daily for background at work mostly plays the F2P MMO Tera. Now, it's not a great game in my opinion, but he's put the hours in at 8 hours pretty much every single day for 3 months straight, and now he's the number 1 Tera streamer averaging about 40-50 viewers at any given time. Sometimes it pays to focus on one game, but that can get boring for the streamer.

As long as it's fun, though, that's the main thing. had my first GWJ visitor too, when Wink dropped by \o/

I actually posted THIS question on Twitter and I'm wondering how much different does a webcam make when streaming or even doing gameplay videos.

Interesting to see what the responses will be. I don't ever plan to have one, though.

In other news, twitch looks semi-broken, again.

Depends on the user, really. I never use a web cam my own self (no one needs to see *motions to self* all this), but some folks I follow, like Bad News Baron, use cameras to great effect.

I'd say, for me personally, good commentary is more important. I watch a lot of speedrunners, and never really care if they have a webcam or not, I guess it does, for a lot of people, make them give a bit of a connection though.
