The pile I might play, and the pile I most likely won't play..
Regular pile, and then newly created pile from Thanksgiving sale.
Is it time for a pile of piles thread?
I have two piles for each system I own. One I must play before I die and then one I will charge my numerous progeny and their offspring to play before they die...
That's a LOT of gaming to get in before this Friday.

Speaking of which, have there been any indications that the sale will have a metagame, follow the format of the last two... or start something else?
If nothing else, I'm hoping for a similar sale like this summer with the badges. I need stinkin' badges!
I hope there is not a meta-game, as I am away from my home computer and ability to play games
Edit: unless that meta-game is for gifting sparkle ponies

Boy, neither of you have self control - think of baseball next time!

That never helps. I don't know anything about baseball, so all that happens is I think "Man, I really don't know anything about baseball." and then it's time to watch Kimmel.

I would prefer this as well, as I'm going to be away from the PC for about 5 days this holiday.
Unless everyone is keeping their cards close, there hasn't exactly been a lot of updates for random games this week. I think we're safe from an achievement driven metagame.
I'm also looking for Spec Ops on sale since I've heard good things about it... which is odd, because historically the series has sucked. Something about the end of the story?
Aww... I was hoping for a "And a GWJer playing Farcry 3" for the title... But sparkle ponies ftw! Now less filling with fewer calories!

I'm so glad this thread exists. I've heard about these "Steam Sales" on the podcast but never participated. So when and for how long is it? I've missed so many Steam Sales over the years because I'm traveling and whatnot and I don't want to miss out again. Is there a better system than checking your wish list daily? Or more or less frequently than that? Does some site work like appshopper.com and email you when your wishlisted games drop in price?
Hahahah, you think Steam will go under. Hahahahah.
Steam is the Twinkies of online gaming. Uh, oh.

You could try the Specials tab on the main Steam page. There is also http://www.steamgamesales.com/. If you're on the go all the time, do you have a smart phone? If so, there is a Steam app that lists sales just as they are on the home page.

Steam has an App, plus you can check the web too. I was notified via email when one of my wishlist games went on sale, but I don't recall that happening often, so not sure what the requirements are for that, or if it is something new.
I have codes for the following games... digging through the pile and I found them.
Avadon: The Black Fortress
Swords & Soldiers HD
Cogs
Zen Bound 2
Let me know if you want.
Edit: All Steam codes
I have the Steam app on my phone, but why would I want to check it every x hours while traveling when there are all these computers around that should be doing it for me?

At least two major companies are bidding to pick up Hostess's ample slack.

I'll just leave this here.
You can check Steam News online for the daily news announcement. You can also follow it on Twitter, or plug the Steam News RSS feed URL into Google Reader or your favorite RSS reader. (this is what I do)
Set up an RSS feed on SteamGameSales (the link is at the very bottom of the page) and plug that into Google Reader. This can include the other onilne game stores, too. (I also do this)
And of course there's IsThereAnyDeal. Both this and SteamGameSales also follow the other online game stores; a good thing, since everyone's in on the whole holiday sale thing.
There's also SteamAlerts, which will send you an email when a particular game goes on sale.
Update: If you want, Steam will now email you if an item on your wishlist goes on sale. I think this just happened in the past week.
Oh! So that is the secret of the magic crystals!!

BTW, did I mention I hate the artist and his lop-sided f**king horseshoe?
[edit]
The secret is the answer to:
Can you thread a horse through the eye of a horseshoe?

Yep. It's Aenus.

Yea! Best new feature for Steam since...groups.
Apparently they added it to the settings on the iPhone app too: "Notify me when wishlist items go on sale"

That's pretty sweet. I'm surprised they didn't announce that.

It's on by default, so you'll get an "announcement" no matter what.
OK, time to prep by preloading my steam wallet. Santa-mendi returns!
Is there any reason I should put money in a Steam Wallet? Do games get cheaper if I do this?

Best reason for it is that it's an easy way to set an arbitrary limit on your spending.
But no, the games do not get cheaper.

Games are the same price regardless of how you pay for them.

That doesn't really help. I can just add more money to the wallet.
It also helps prevent triggering alerts on your credit card. Plenty of people here have had their cards locked due to too many small charges in a day during these sales.
For me, I was able to add some money into my wallet when I had extra before shopping for Christmas gifts for the family. So now, during the sale, I'll have some money for gifting here and not feel like I'm adding to the debt of the holidays
