Dead Island: Riptide - Catch All

Downloading now.

So far I em enjoying the game. It really is much of the same, but since I enjoyed Dead Island I do not mind. I did change characters and am not liking the kicking animation. (Xian Mei)

Yeah, it's definitely a Dead Island game. I've put a little over an hour into it with my level 32 (now 34) Purna.

They've put all the other characters into the game world and come up with a justification for what they're doing while you're out murdering zombies, so no more buddies appearing just for cutscenes. They help out at certain points in the game (so far, when defending the base camp), and you can do quests for them to improve their weaponry. It's kind of neat. They've also added a new use-based XP system for weapon classes, so the more you use one type of weapon (I think it's Blades, Blunt, Guns and Unarmed), the better you get with it, unlocking perks like enhanced durability along the way.

Best change I've noticed so far is that shops now ONLY carry high-grade, rare items. In other words, only stuff you might actually want.

They haven't fixed my complaint from the first game, which is that once you hit a certain level it doesn't really matter how much health you have because any hit will take off a huge chunk. Some people might like that as it adds more challenge to a game that can otherwise be fairly easy. I find myself missing a L4D-style shove to get some breathing room.

Sounds like they've made some decent updates to the game. I might have to pick this up! Too many games for this time of year!!

It's just not enough for me anymore, was a big fan of the first one but in a post DayZ world it just holds no excitement playing this much of a zombie action shooter anymore. I feel let down that this wasn't a DLC for the game i already owned:( Oh well, may just be me...

Unfortunately they've done the usual Australian price hike for this. A big reason I picked up the first was because they didn't, so at $40 that's about half the usual retail price of games here. Unfortunately this is $70, which I just can't justify at the moment. I figure it'll come down in price quickly.

Publishers take note. People will impulse buy a lot more at lower prices, it's not like you're going to run out of stock.

So the load times are getting on the wrong side of appalling. It's come to a point where I don't want to explore buildings or caves that are separate areas because the wait is so ridiculously long. I had to wait something like 3 minutes for a one room cave to load. That's nuts.

I noticed this a fair bit in the original, when I was playing co-op with my ex, her load times on my Alienware laptop were very fast, but my tiny-god PC with a solid state hard drive had terrible loading times. I have no idea why, you'd think it'd be the opposite.

Okay, I just got this game and am seriously unimpressed with the changes they've made to the mechanics. Unfortunately, I've lent Dead Island 1 to a friend so I can't confirm all of these but here are my initial gripes after beginning a game with an imported DI1 character:

- Kicking takes stamina (yes, apparently, they patched this into the original - though I never played with that 1.3 patch)
- Movement feels slower: move your stick even slightly to the side and you'll immediately slow to a crawl, backing up feels slower and moving through water is very much slower.
- Hit detection feels very, very off. I'm swinging/kicking at enemies and missing them a lot of the time but then randomly hitting them when they're the same distance away - or, more annoyingly, hitting a wall next to them but not hitting the enemies.

I'm dying all the time and mostly dying because I can't hit the enemies and can't move away from them because my stamina is taken up from just dealing with one enemy.

This game is a lot less fun without the unlimited kick mechanic. I would not recommend anyone buy it after having played for about 2 hours.

I've played a bit on 360. Seems very much like the first game, which isn't a problem necessarily except that no one on my friends list is playing. The game doesn't seem tooled for one player as you just get mobbed so easily. Unless someone is playing the next time I'm on or so, I'm probably done.

Anyone finish the game?

I have been playing this sporadically and am enjoying it, but have not even made it to Henderson.

I am a few missions in to Henderson but have a hard time going back to it. I think my progress is around 75%

Personally I like that I am not wanting to play the game continuously. I like that I am playing it in small doses since I tend to burn through a game quickly, however the pull factor in the game is missing and for gamerswithoutjobs or people who like to play through games quickly I could see the game being tedious.

I've been playing through it with a co op buddy or two in spurts. The game is muh better that way than when it was just myself. We are on chapter 10.

Hey all, I don't suppose anyone has some screenshots that I could use in a "review" on my blog?

Unfortunately, I played on console and the official site doesn't have any good gameplay screenshots that I want to use and I didn't want to just rip some random pictures from google.

Thanks in advance!

You might want to ask them nicely before using them.

Yeah, I know that's why I wanted to ask Goodjers first rather than random people.

Ok, free weekend.

Played for 30-60 minutes. Ok, is it me, or the camera is shacking like if the character is drunk, all the time!

I can understand on the boat, but even on dry land I get this feeling.

So far, I wasn't impressed. Think I'll finish the first game, and see later... Or am I missing something?

My review is at the blog/podcast in my Sig. The game certainly gets better as you go along and I definitely preferred rupture to the original. I don't remember any camera shaking?
