Vancouver S&T - Super short notice! *Again!* Feb 21-26, 2013

*Feb 18, 2013: Jump to this comment for another short notice S&T!*

Hey Vancouver goodjers, how about a S&T? How about the evening of this Friday, June 4th?

Yup, it's pretty short notice but Amoebic is coming to town and that seems a good a reason as any to have one. The idea being tossed around right now is boardgaming at Drexoll Games, with the party subsequently moving to a pub/someone's place, group size and spouse/roommate permitting.

The date's a little inflexible, but if you have any suggestions or alternatives (or are available!), please let us know.

C'mon, let's show those Seattle types who the real PNW goodjers are! Amoebic excepted.

I'm in.

Good start so far.

I am so there. Be great to find out just how many of us are around here.

Woohoo I'm so excited! And I just can't hide it! I'm about to lose control and I think I like it!

If all goes according to plan, my bus into town should be arriving downtown around 5:30 or so. I'll try to travel as light as possible so I can just hop a bus over to where drexoll's is straight from there. My only concern is that neither my husband or I have a car, so if we stay out late anywhere, we may need a ride to the nearest skytrain station.

Are any of you Vancouver folks pretty familiar with the bus system? I'm not really familiar with what's running about in that part of town (husband lives in New West, so we know that side and the Burnaby area but not a whole lot else).

Should we decide on a time? Maybe 6:30 at Drexoll's so we can all grab a quick bite on our own before descending upon the shop? If we're more than, say, 4-5 peeps should we give Drexoll's a head's up so they're not overwhelmed with Goodge?

A 6:30 start works for me.

I know the bus system around here pretty well, and what I don't know, Google Maps on the iPhone does. But it's pretty much a short walk and one bus from the big bus station to Drexoll (#84), and a shorter walk and one bus (#99) to the nearest SkyTrain station if we stay around that area. I don't have a car either, and if there's none available I can always figure out a bus route.

Sounds like a plan. Although you make us sound like some sort of viscous liquid

You say that like it's a bad thing!

Edit: So Drexoll's website says they're open until 9pm, though Gravey says they're open until 11 for gaming. Just wanted to add that FYI.

I'll try. I'm pretty sure I have previous plans as well as a ball hockey tournament over the weekend. I'll see what I can swing.

I am very familiar with the bus system. If we/you're on 4th & Mac by Drexoll's a 22 heading downtown will drop you off at the Burrard Skytrain Station. Sometimes catching a b-line to commercial (assuming you're going to New West) is the fastest route if you're on Broadway.

Broadway is pretty much the main artery. If you know where that is you can get almost anywhere without switching busses more than twice. Drexoll is 6 (vertical) blocks north of the closest 99 B-Line stop at Mcdonald street. If you ride that all the way east to the end of the line it stops right beside the skytrain station. That goes directly into Burnaby. After that you probably know the area better than I do. I only know how to get to metrotown and the archery range.

If she's heading to New West the skytrain will take her right there. The 22 (runs along MacDonald) will also drop her off at Burrard skytrain.

Yeah his apartment is a couple blocks from Columbia station, so we're good as long as we can get to the skytrain.

But the Burrard skytrain station is all the way across the water on the far side of downtown. Thats quite a detour.

It's a big maybe because of the short notice but I've wanted to hit up a S&T for quite a while now. I'll see what I can do!

I'd love to, but Fridays are tough for me. I work till the work is done, which sometimes means into the early morn'. Still, if possible, I'm in.

It's actually closer than Commercial Drive by bus the 22 runs later and more frequently on a Friday night.

You can buy games until 9pm, then they close the till and it's gaming only until 11pm (Drexoll's events calendar). I've never been to one of their gaming nights, so I'll call them this afternoon to see if there's anything we need to know about our group size. Sounds like it's going to be between 5-8 of us so far.

I spoke to someone at Drexoll and she said just to arrive early to nab a table. I'll get there as soon as I can and stake our claim. Exciting!

I decided to hop on an earlier bus just to be on the safe side, so I'll probably be in town around 3pm, so I'll be sure to be there a little before 5pm (before people get off work, hehe). Together, we can hold the fort! Also, we can start on some gaaaaames, and it'll be righteous. Just so you know, I'll be bringing:

Robo Rally (bg)
Battlestar Galactica (bg)
Gloom (cg)
Quao (cg)
Gubs (cg)

I'll see if my husband can bring Hive with him that way if we end up playing some 4-player games and a few extra folks show up they've got something awesome to do.

Edit: cg = card game, bg = board game

I can bring:

Citadels (cg)
Dominion (cg)
Last Night on Earth (bg)
Pandemic (bg)

And I will probably buy Dominion: Intrigue while we're there.

Hmm true. The train would probably beat the beeline to commercial.

I got nothing in terms of board games. Except maybe a dusty monopoly set in a closet somewhere but pshaw.

Its too bad no one has space hulk. I've always wanted to try that.

Me too, but don't tempt me! If I come home with that, Mrs. Gravey will kill me.

Damn, I loved to get in on this but my parents are coming to town on Friday and its going to be impossible getting out of going to dinner with them.

Maybe depending on the turn out to this one/interest in another S&T, we could get another going for later this summer. Thoughts?

We'll probably be there until they throw us out at 11pm, so if you can convince the parents of an early-ish dinner you could catch up with us later. Depending on how the stars are aligned, after Drexoll's we may or may not be hitting up a pub so just keep in touch. If anyone in the group has internet access on their phones (my data charges would be outrageous to use in Canada) we could check the thread to see if you get freed up. Are you on the twitters?

Ooh, interesting! I will try my best to make it. Although I work late so I may not make it until 8 or so.

Okay guys! I'll be there wearing a black blouse, dark blue jeans, and black shoes to identify me. It looks like the weather's going to be rainy, so I might also be wearing a black NorthFace jacket. Be sure to have some waterproof bags to protect your games!

Ditto. It looks like we're going to be pretty busy after work afterall

My plans for tonight have not fallen through so I will busy. Another time.

I've got an idea!

Heading out now. I have a bunch of stuff to do before but I should see you guys there at 5-6pm. I'll be wearing a red backpack, see you there!
