Destiny Catch-All

I'm confused, is this some kind of Halo-lands 2 hybrid of a game? If so, I can see my wife and I enjoying this.

It's a game with MMOish elements from what I can tell. There's a story, but I don't quite know how it'll be handled. My best guess is that you basically wander the land with a small group of buddies, and occasionally stuff will happen that will pull other players in and BAM! huge ass battle going on.

More or less, but with more proper MMO elements in it, i.e. the public events that everyone on the server can participate in; running into other parties out in the wild etc.

Anyone else surprised that Bungie's pre-order offer (pre-order Destiny from select retailer and get access to the BETA) is only available if you buy the DISC.

One of the things that makes this coming generation so unique is that ALL games from day one will be available for download. Seems like a huge oversight not to offer BETA access if you also pre-order the game directly from Bungie for the platform of your choice.

Considering that the 2 primary platforms don't have any online shops yet, and that the current generation consoles aren't doing any real preorder schemes, not surprised at all.

Saw a new trailer with some game play

http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/8...

Since that links to Gametrailers page with their player I thought I would also post a Youtube video

Looks pretty great to me.

Isn't that video several months old? I think I saw it from E3.

BAH!

Think most of us seen the E3 footage.

Here's the new trailer in youtube.

Still no solid release date, eh?

Release date is set: September 9th, 2014.

I wonder how much Call of Duty sales and the current install base play a part in the pushed release date? Wasn't it supposed to be Spring 2014?

Current install base of what, precisely? It's being released for damned near everything.

Just to point out that the beta will be during this coming summer, and will be coming to PS3/4 first.

Am I the only one that thinks they have packed in a lot of tedious stuff that is going to make for kind of a boring game?

It does look worryingly MMO like but then I trust Bungie to know what's fun and what isn't.

Tedious is in the eye of the beholder. I've played 'all out action' games which are as tedious as hell and have thoroughly enjoyed mundane tasks in games that I'd hate in real life.

It's all in the execution and Bungie are pretty good at that.

This...

but was there ever a question that this wasn't a MMO?

@Jayhawker,

Thanks for the video link. It's a really nice summary of what's been drip-fed to us so far.

This is the game that is driving my purchase of the PS4. I haven't seen any other Intellectual Property - old or new - that's been compelling enough to persuade me to upgrade.

That said, a few things concern/intrigue me:

(1) I'm still unclear how the 'Destiny' story - assuming there is one - will be told and progressed in this game. Does anyone know?

(2) I'm mildly concerned about how the level of challenge will be balanced for solo players. Specifically, will every 'dungeon' be solo-able, irrespective of class or focus? Or is it possible that solo players will find themselves confronting unsurmountable odds and therefore forced to 'summon' a la Demons/Dark Souls? (Though, given the direction games are going, that may be no bad thing.)

(3) Finally, I don't expect that PvP will appeal to me all that much (from the video it looks like Deathmatch/Team Deathmatch exclusively). But if I do decide to dip in, I'm a little worried that it will all be very 'twitch', with little room for us aging gamers to make a meaningful contribution.

Nonetheless, still a Day 1 Purchase for me. And one I'm genuinely excited about.

I was hoping it was going to be more of a unique beast. I don't mind an MMO as long as it's a fresh take and has new ideas. When I said it was 'worryingly MMO like' I guess I should have said it was looking too much like a traditional loot and dungeons MMO to me.

@Higgledy,

That's a fair point. I think one of the challenges for Bungie is to create a living, breathing game 'world' outside of the dungeons, public events and PvP arenas. Otherwise, as you see, this is basically the Elder Scrolls: Online, no?

The tower, the social space for players, sounds interesting. But there's a risk that this turns into another Playstation Home (is that still going, BTW?).

What will be crucial for me are the non-enemy NPCs - which I notice the What We Know video is silent on. Without them the game world could turn out to be a bit sterile.

What will also be important for me is Bungie's ability to conceal the boundaries of the game world. Clearly, they're not going to be creating entire planets of content, but I think they will need to do something more elegant than, say, Bioware acheived with the Mass Effect trilogy where all the environments were very functional. Something more like the single-player Elder Scrolls games which give the player a real sense of individual discovery.

Because it is pretty much just that. They're just using different terms because they know that 'mmo','pve','pvp' are worn and tired terms.

The biggest difference I see them doing is keeping the party size down to 3 and their phasing tech to pull people in/out of a zone.

The more I see about this game the more excited I get. I hope the gameplay is at least serviceable because the world that is build up at this point is very interesting.

It's Bungie, I'm thinking the gameplay will be very good.

Yes, I have faith that Bungie will be able to deliver a fun game. I am worried that the nature of the everything being multiplayer/singleplayer might mean that one experience is better than the other.

Sadly, Marty O'Donnell (veteran soundtrack composer on everything from Myth to Halo) was just fired by Bungie. There's definitely something suspicious going on over there behind the scenes.

...fired?

He was fired?

...what?

My brain is leaking out of my ears right now.

I mean, someone getting fired is crappy in all scenarios (unless they were, like, peeing in people's suitcases or something), but what could your music composer do that would lead to firing him? Outside of, again, peeing in people's suitcases.

I really hope a statement comes out to explain the situation, or something. That's just weird.

I hate to be that guy, but fired without cause? Really? The only people who could confirm or deny that are legally bound not to share employee personal information, usually meaning they can't say much of anything on why... soooo, he can really say almost anything he wants to about the situation. I'm skeptical though, because I've had a lot of friends who have claimed they were fired for no real reason when they were actually fired for things like smoking illegal substances, ridiculous amounts of tardiness, work quality issues, etc...
