Marvel Heroes - Catch All

A lot of fun as a "Pick up for an hour or so and get a new level" kind of game. Ms. Marvel is just bad ass so far. If I pick up a founder's pack, it will be her solo or the Avengers one with her in it. She has nasty ranged skills and can go toe-to-toe with fists to boot.

Big fan of Deadpool - his regenerate health skill makes him almost indestructible. Cant wait until release. They have definitely tweaked the drop rates on the particles and skins - I have had no skins drop this test and particles have been pretty rare as well. They still havent found a happy medium. I am pleased with the actual item drops though - I like how they seem to be tailored to your class although you get stuff to twink others. By level 17 - I had all Blue items with Deadpool and two purples while finding enough other drops to make me wish I had access to the other characters. Surprisingly I found Iron Man to be kind of boring and fragile compared to the "Merc with the Mouth". I am also a huge fan of Deadpool's in game dialog - I think they really nailed it. The opening city is kind of bland, but the follow on environments are pretty good. The boss fights that just kind of "spawn" against super villains are a good time and always attract a crowd and the array of powers being unleashed can be spectacular.

I think they've done a really good job at making all of the characters fun to play. While I've found some to be more fun than others, I haven't had a bad time with any that I've tried so far.

Spider-Man was pretty terrible a month or two back.

Think he's been buffed repeatedly, but I haven't tried him again lately. Was so soured by his original performance.

Looked pretty good this weekend. Seemed a pretty hefty damage dealer as did Thor. Deadpool seems to be good across the board with survivability his greatest strength. I like the massive Stash size as well, but it gets filled quick if you're a pack rat like me.

I have 12 retcon devices in my stash, becuase other than a storm, that's all that has dropped for extreme rare stuff.

I got 2 retcons and two purple gear, 1 weap, 1 boots. I thought that was pretty good for my Deadpool. I missed my Deadpool X-Force skin though. Going to start with Cable and Deadpool on release. Probably run a little Spidey as well.

Well, that was fun. Played Iron Man, Hulk, and Storm. Meg played Captain America, Hawkeye, and Thor. Three of us played in a party and we made it up to the beginning of Madripoor (my Hulk got up to level 17 by the end). Boss fights were great and it was fun to try out all the powers.

I can't see buying one of the packs but I'd probably buy some coins to get a few characters and XP potions.

I'm fairly certain they scrapped the coins for guaranteed character drops idea.

So you won't be able to buy characters in the store with the G-whatevers like I did this weekend?

Yes you can - that and random drops is the only way to get additional characters and skins.

What Spy said. At one point they were going to take characters out of the store entirely, but put in tokens you could buy that (when used) guaranteed that the next boss you beat would drop a random character for you. They scrapped that idea and went back to being able to buy characters via the store. When you said you were planning on buying coins to get some characters, I thought you were talking about those.

If you're going to buy coins for characters, you might as well buy the character pack anyway, since it comes with the in-game currency as well. The $20 founder pack come with $10 worth of the in-game currency, and $5 bonus currency. I just checked their site and the bonus currency the packs include stops being awarded at 12:00PM PDT today. You'd still get the $10, you just wouldn't get the extra $5.

100% agreement. If you plan on buying a character - get one of the packs that has majority of guys you want and you should get some in game currency to grab one of the others of some additional skins.

The good news is that the currency it comes with will be enough for at least one more character, probably two, so all you really have to decide is which character do you want the extra costumes for.

Well, that's a good idea but now I have to decide what founder pack to buy.

EDIT: Avengers pack purchased!

That's interesting.

I guess with open beta everyone who wanted to try the game has had a chance and also a chance to preorder.

This weekend is the last Open Beta. Anyone else interested in checking it out? Looks like buying a starter pack gives you beta access until launch, but your progress will be reset at launch anyway.

I have been playing this for a couple months now, and really enjoy it. I did purchase a $60 founders pack when they were first available back in January(I think) and will be playing at release.

How many people can go out to beat up bad guys together? It is instanced "dungeons"?

In a group, yes.

There are large outdoor areas where everyone can go to, but I have found, you don't see multiple copies of the same heroes in the same spot generally unless you are fighting zone event boss.

That's just a player habit thing, nothing in the game prevents it, and I've run across numerous other people with the same hero as me when on the "open" maps.

Atras wrote:

Parties are limited to 5 players. There's the open map, which will be rather large and tends to go through several zones, and then there are party-instanced dungeons/caves/bases. On the open maps you don't have to group up with other players to fight together. It's pretty common to have someone follow you around for a little while and help you fight without being in a party, though you would miss out on each others party buffs, if you have any (they say they apply to "allies" within a certain distance of you, so you'd think that'd be any other hero, but only actually apply to party members). Some villains are only in the instanced areas, and all villains scale to however many players are fighting them (leading to the open map ones taking a very long time to defeat if there are a lot of players).

I'm pretty much beta'd out on this game, but can't wait to play when my progress will actually count.

I got a good amount of time in on this game this weekend - even with them locking out new sign ons to help with the lag. I picked Thor as my character, and I felt like the initial power selection was a little slow in coming. Mostly, I was really feeling the melee focus of Thor and missing the ability to either fly or throw Mjolnir at people. Once I got a few levels (which come really quickly at first) I got some dash-into-the-fray powers which was great, and I started making good use of the Hammer Pound to toss back ranks of enemies, then calling the lightning on them. With the points they gave us, I grabbed Cyclops and Hawkeye, who are both ranged, primarily. It looks like I could have specced Cyclops for more of a melee fighter, but if you are going to use a guy who can shoot laser beams out of his eyes, it feels silly to focus on his fists. My kids joined me with Iron Man and Captain America, so I put points into Cyclops' Team Leader ability, which boosts the XP of my teammates when they are close to me and his Tactical power that lowers the enemy defenses - it made us a very strong team very quickly. The coolest moment came when my oldest son got a Hulk unlock drop. Even at level one, hanging out with two level 6 guys, Hulk was devastating. He was able to level to a point in just a couple of minutes where he could jump into the air onto a group of guys and Cyclops and Iron Man could blast away the stragglers with energy weapons. The actual gameplay is a bit on the repetitive side, but I was enjoying it quite a bit - enough to buy a Cyclops Founders Pack - 20 dollars per character is crazy expensive, but I wanted at least one character who I know teams up well when the game launches.

One thing I noticed: leveling up the vendors is a huge waste of credits. I dumped multiple loads of inventory into the Weapon vendor, and the goods they had at level 2 were still dramatically worse than anything I picked up wandering the streets of Hell's Kitchen. Leveling up Hank Pym, on the other hand, was 100% worth it - combining elements not only freed up a ton of inventory space, but as early as level 2 I could start upgrading my costume with Offensive or Defensive boosts.

Yeah leveling the vendors only seems to be worth it when you switch to an alt that starts fresh with no gear, to outfit them. Even then, I think some of the store bought gear still has level restrictions, so it's not really worth it.

And yes, Hulk has been pretty strong from day 1 and I don't think they've nerfed him much. They really nailed the feel of him though, so it's hard to change.

We all decided here that all gear goes to level up Hank. Who buys stuff from vendors in ARPGs anyway?

Anyway, still really looking forward to launch day. I had some graphics issues (as did a bunch of other people) based on the game not detecting my laptop's video card properly but I'm confident that will be sorted out.

Another account reset today apparently.

At this point I will probably just take a break until head-start. Can't see repeating those first 4 maps again without counting for anything. :p

I actually found leveling up the item vendors to be pretty useful, especially once they got up to 4 & 5. It also helps that there's really nothing else to do with credits.

A tip for Cyclops (if you haven't already discovered it yourself), find a weapon that gives spirit upon killing an enemy, and you can use Optic Barrage pretty much non-stop on normal mobs/minions. Really, it should work for any hero with a skill that's similar to Optic Barrage, but Cyclops in particular became so much more satisfying to play once I figured out that combination. I was killing normal mobs faster than the melee characters could get to them. Obviously, it doesn't help against bosses at all, as they take more than a few hits to kill.

They are introducing Cable in the next patch, I think I might be taking a break from Neverwinter....

I'll be switching between Cable and Deadpool for my first play through.

Cable is easy mode....between his Phsycic Haze being a DoT and then finishing them off with your Searing shot, never had an easier time with starting bosses/world bosses.
