======================

I used the search function but I was unable to find any threads on this, but one that is over a year old.

So, anyone interested in this? They had their first Closed Beta Test for the North American release last weekend and so far, I've been reading a lot of positive comments about it. Closed Beta is available to anyone that pre-orders so I decided to head to their official site and place my order (also available through Amazon) so I can get into the next CB Weekend and test it myself.

So, what is TERA?
TERA is a Korean ACTION MMO and what makes it different from our regular MMOs is that combat is similar to something like Monster Hunter, Phantasy Star Online or even DCUO. So there's no targeting and casting spells/abilities like other MMOs. You are actively dodging attacks, aiming spells, etc.

Korean MMO, huh? The grind... I'm out of here!
Well, the game is being brought to NA and EU by En Masse Entertainment and among their ranks of developers, are several western veterans that worked for Blizzard and other big studios. They are "westernizing" the game and so far, based on the first beta weekend's reports, there doesn't seem to have a grind at all. I'll have to see for myself though.

Release Dates
NA: May 1 2012
EU: May 3 2012

Some Recent Trailer:

There are ton of new videos since the first Close Beta event this last weekend. Gameplay and Graphics look amazing in my opinion.

I've been hearing grumblings over the course of the few years it's been under development. It was enough to take it off my list of mmos to watch out for. It may have been just a west/east thing but that they're only doing weekend sprints with closed beta doesnt bode well either.

I've got beta access, but I'm kind of put off downloading 13GB+ (plus whatever the high res textures add) for a few weekends. I guess this is where streaming downloads are good.

Interest has definitely waned in this title over the last year. I will still give it a whirl.

Warning, apparently downtime in this game is old school. So if you are good at dodging and blocking you won't take much damage. However, regening health is minutes rather than 10ish seconds in modern games. There are bandages and camps to help some.

In a post DCUO and Darkfall world, this game is less of a break through. And there are some complaints that animation locks make this less of an action mmo sometimes.

This is still a day one purchase for me. In fact if I wan't in the diablo beta and I didn't want to play KoA Reckoning or SWTOR I would preorder this and jump in the beta weekend.

I can't help but feel that their window of opportunity was 6-12 months ago. Now they have to compete with Guild Wars 2 and Diablo 3 and maybe even Secret World.

edit: BTW watch the ranged combat (sorc) and melee combat (lancer) videos with a grain of salt. They could not have gotten a more boring demoer if they tried. I've seen much better newb footage over the years from the Korean release.

Two things I found troublesome while trying to find a race/class combo chart:

If there is a Lancer in the Archer’s group, the Lancer can use one of his skills to further decrease the target’s defense. This lethal combination can result in the Archer critical hitting PvP targets for all of their HP. Warrior also has a similar skill known as Combative Strike, which is acquired at LV6.
Berserkers have become notorious for their ability to one-shot almost every other class, which obviously appeals greatly to many players.

I will never understand how is this fun?

Watching all the videos and reading most of the hype now, gets me really excited, but it's stuff like this that you mentioned, fangblackbone, that makes me want to test it for myself. I really want to experience the combat, because it does look awesome at least.

I'm a MMO whore and this year will be really tough to get enough time to test/play things like GW2, Secret World, Tera and Diablo 3. I'm definitely giving all of these a try and I hope one of them is the "next big thing", even though I'm playing SWTOR right now and having a lot of fun, but unless they get a lot of new content soon, I think I will have to put it aside for a while.

Looks cool and the Asian MMOs always have cool wep and armor models but not sure I can play another fantasy MMO. I really wish I would have played more Tabula Rosa.

I guess what I mean is I'd like some more non fantasy settings but I guess that does not lend itself well to art, etc. SWTOR was great but my video card has been down and even though I get my new one tomorrow I just have zero interest to pick it back up!

I pre-ordered to get some game time in before launch, so I could be sure if it would connect with me. Played a bit last weekend and got a Priest up to 14. I think 22 is the cap for the betas. Not the most elegant way to summarize impressions, but BishopRS and I had a chat that I saved.

[GWJ] BishopRS: Hey cyrax. How's TERA?
cyrax: well, I intentionally played a priest. thought that be the weirdest for an action game. combat is slowly growing on me, but everything else is typical MMO, and nothing particularly well done or great.
[GWJ] BishopRS: kinda like Aion with more action based combat?
cyrax: think I'll followi through w/the rest of the beta and try most of the classes, but unless there's one I really connect with, I'll sadly be skipping the game. Really wanted to like this.
cyrax: I geuss, though I thought Aion had style/personality, it felt alive or slightly real. TERA so far is so generic to be boring.
[GWJ] BishopRS: dang
cyrax: I'm level 10, and the only thing not typical I've done is climb vines to gather something. And even then I remember doing that in AoC.
cyrax: combat is definitely getting better though

Because the game has a sort of auto-attack (hold down mouse 1), and you (I'm pretty sure) can't break out of your animations, it just becomes a slightly more action oriented MMORPG than is typical; and thus, scenarios still boil down to min/max skill cooldowns and the sort.

I'm certain I'll cancel my pre-order, but I'd like to try out some other classes first, particularly the dual wielder.

Apparently the archer is an awesome class that pushes over fence sitters.
I'd love to get your impressions of the mystic too. Apparently they are soloing beasts with their pet and skill variety.

As sad as your chat is, it is not unexpected. I am going to buy this game at launch, though I never expected to play more than the first month. It has always been my concern that more actiony combat is only going to get you to mmo burnout faster.

And the Secret World is releasing weeks or a month before this.

Is the staleness due to low beta population? Have you been able to group at all?

I've been following this game for around 4 years. Ever since the first announcement of its development, and through the lawsuit with NCSoft since it's modeled on the stolen Lineage 3 code.

The game doesn't need a lot of beta testing. It has already been released almost 2 years ago in the East. The only beta to test is the translations.

I will most likely check it out just because I still enjoy L2 after 7 years, but the general consensus is pretty poor from what I can tell over at the MMORPG boards.

Yah, the conscensus I've been able to interpret is that the standout features are the group combat dynamics (because of the active dodging and line of sight healing)and BAM's (big ass monsters)

It's that they've made no efforts to make the MMORPG side anything even remotely interesting. There's no great lore or quest to fall back on when the questing system is the definition of rote. Go half a minute away to talk to another NPC, kill things, kill things for stuff, or wait for placed items to respawn after other characters have used them. And as far as I got, there's little choice in the RPG. Slotable equipment is the deepest thing I saw.

I know there's a political system in the backend, but why should I care when the rest of the game begs me to do better things with my time?

I'll be playing this weekend just to see how they do some of the systems, but I have no intention of even buying this MMO at launch. Sad panda on that, because it looks kinda neat.

I just know there's no way I'll be able to get a crew together for it, so ...

scratch that. got a key. Anyone playing want to team up?

BishopRS wrote:

Sure, I'll be playing a bit more. They're starting the servers back up PST, so I won't be able to play until the morning. I've got a Steam shortcut setup so you'll know when I'm playing.

Well, it looks like I won't be playing this weekend. I thought something was weird when the patch was taking a day or two to complete, but now I know the patcher is screwy. It was back at 30% this morning, and the repair install option is greyed out. I'll send a message to support but I doubt I'll be able to play this time.

I haven't played a whole lot, but I have definitely enjoyed my time. Yes the questing mechanics are rote, but the combat system more than makes up for this IMO, combat is just fun and satisfying. That means more to me than lore/questing personally.

So I broke down and pre-ordered. But the download is taking forever. At best I'm getting 240kBps so we are looking at 27 hours to download. This is not a good sign.

I had the opposite experience. I'll be passing on this one but I'm glad others are having a good time.

Did you try a few different classes BishopRS?

Yeah. Warrior, Lancer and Mystic. The action gameplay is ok, but the questing seems like a step backwards.

Wow. The questing is very whatever, but I really like the mesh of action/mmo tropes. I wish they'd gone a little further, given us a sprint or a dodge or something. I've level a Priest up to 8 (in just a few hours) and love the 'firey jumpback' ability, but for a game that seems to want to center around movement in its encounter design it's still very MMO-slow.

That said, I really hope some other games pull some of the great ideas out of this one. The 'skill shots' that have you doing things like timed-hitting a button, or holding a button to charge it and then pointing your character in a direction are a fun diversion from the norm.

I went into the weekend expecting basically nothing, and now I find myself wishing I could get into a TERA static group. Dang you, fascinating design!

I've only gotten an hour or so in play so it's tough to judge the game but I did enjoy what I was able to play so far. I do like the combat being more interactive rather than "Just stand there and hit the correct buttons." I'm not sure what time the beta ends today, if it even does end today. I gotta give this another beta weekend before I make up my mind on it. With Diablo 3, Torchlight 2, Path of Exile, and Guild Wars 2 coming out all within the next few months it might be a bit too much of an overload to add a subscription MMO to that.

Questing is brain dead run of the mill. I think the most complexity you will get out of this game is the instances and BAM fights.
The priest and mystics get their heals instead of the stock dodge out of the gate.
A basic sprint sprint would be awesome. There is a passive increase movement speed by 30% out of combat but unfortunately it just feels like normal movement and by default that makes movement in combat is dog slow. (not necessarily a bad design since it prevents the chaotic and frantic point blank circle strafing that is melee pvp in other games)

Fast attacking and ranged classes are much more playable out of the gate due to animation lock. (You can't interrupt a skill animation once its been triggered and it appears there is a skill queue. So if you've queued 2(3 maybe?) fireballs you have to wait until the casting of them is finished until you can dodge or do another skill) This makes a low level berserker and slayer cumbersome to play. I know later berserkers get a whirlwind skill, lancers get a charge, and slayers get a weapon throw that will help.

Quick hit solo class impressions:

mystic - solid fun and versatile; pet controls are clunky despite being basic attack and follow
sorceress - fun and lots of diverse aoe in the early levels
archer - blast
slayer - cumbersome to play at low levels but I know they get weapon throw and other interesting abilities hopefully earlier than later
berserker - most cumbersome to play at low levels; they are a powerful class though so I know eventually they will ramp up
lancer - less cumbersome than slayer but it didn't really grab me as a class to look forward to
warrior - least cumbersome of the melee classes out of the gate because of the quick hitting
priest - didn't play

Now to be fair, the combat is repetitive. I cringe for mid and high level play a bit when it takes 10+ fireballs at level 1to kill a level 1 monster.

Okay so some more experience with the other classes definitely helps you get a feel for the berserker, slayer and lancer. There is a rhythm to them with when you can and can't interrupt a combo to block or dodge. If you stick it out, the slayer especially gets more well rounded quickly and the berserker feels powerful rather than sluggish. The lancer also gets some sweet shield bashes after the first few levels.

The ranged classes still have a much easier go at it. And in a sense that makes them more "fun".

It still has big challenges from the upcoming The Secret World that looks to have the same or similar action combat, and much more depth in the skill and quest system. And then there is Guild Wars 2...

Yeah. It's a shame, but I think this game is going to get entirely lost in the shuffle this year. I definitely think they're making a mistake trying to launch it with a sub fee. I assume they're just trying to make their money now while they can before they're inevitably forced F2P.

If you can look past the pedo-foxgirls, INCREDIBLY objectified women, and boring-ass quest mechanics, there's a damned fine online game in there. Shame.

True. It totally could fill that online hangout with friends game. Between TERA and Aion there is a successful Lineage 3 in there somewhere.

There is no excuse for the Elin. I had hoped their would be some clothing customization for them (and all characters) at character creation but nope you are stuck with little girl panty shots. I had hoped to play one because I love the hyperbolic contrast of the powerful small and innocent person/creature with a massively powerful weapon. (like gnome melee classes in every other game) But no, I am stuck with panty shots of 9 year olds. The only other complaint I have is the Castanic female run that looks like they are bound at the elbow and kick their heels out to the side like they are perpetually going to fall forward. (anime schoolgirl run)

Its a really shame because there is a line here were the outfits are incredibly fashion forward, elegant and yes sexy as hell. On the humans, high elves and aman it looks incredibly fierce. (I am woman, hear me roar!) Unfortunately, those outfits that would overpower the juvenile panty shots you don't get till later. So you get stuck with newb tunics and bikini bottoms.

I agree, fang. I made a human woman and elven woman to see how they fared, and generally dug them ... except for the part where they have some sort of harsh spinal deformity. ;P

Oh, right, and they get NO PANTS! Bah.

At least anytime somebody wonders aloud why more women don't play games, we can just link them to the TERA homepage as an informational exercise.
