Ni No Kuni: Wrath of The White Witch Catch-all

My hope is that something like this will make Namco Bandai, and other companies who run their online operations through Digital River, reconsider that decision. I know it won't, but I keep hoping.

I wish I could be playing now, but I'm waiting to pick my wife up from the airport so we can play together. I really want to get back and feed Thanatos (he likes Pie).

I am loving this game. It is making me sad that I never finished DQ VIII after 30 hours in.

Just made it to Ding Dong Dell, really enjoying it. Polished on all fronts.
The pacing to introduce game elements is very slow, but that's expected. Feels like there will be enough once it's all unveiled.

One gripe, anyone notice a considerable separation between Oliver's animation between the Ghibli cut scenes and in game. I feel Drippy seems pretty consistent between the two but Oliver seems far less expressive. A little disappointing, but a tough task I'd imagine.

Very disappointing about the pre-orders. Hope you all get into it soon.

I just got an email from Namco at 5:22p est of it shipping! I did the UPS trick and it says it should arrive on Friday if "early" or Monday if not.

Yeeeep, got an email from Digital River tonight that they oversold and canceled my order.

Man, assholes. Ugh.

Wow. That's a complaint with the BBB if I ever heard one.

Ugh. Do you want mine, Blind, if they actually ship it? I'd like to play the game and right now I feel like they're just holding my money hostage while I wait for the inevitable.

Huh. Just noticed this was $5 off in the PSN store. $54.99

Filthy skimmer

Silly question: how is the manual? That could be a deciding factor for physical vs digital.

Pretty bare bones. It's black and white and about five pages long per language (there's a joke about newspapers in there somewhere). So nothing too exiting.

Sorry I'm purposely trying not to read the thread much since I know I'm going to play it eventually. So yes, definitely skimming.

*the US price. $25 - $30 off prices in Australian retail. We be getting gouged.

Okay, now I have to gush.
Contrary to my previous animation gripe, seeing Ollie traverse stairs is a nice touch I've not seen in a game before and I think the whimsy of Mr Drippy is going to make this game.
And point cards!? How Japanese. Love it.

The way he goes up and down stairs jumped out at me too! Everywhere, it's obvious that someone spent a lot of time making things just so. The amazing thing to me is that the game is so excellent on all of these fronts. Maybe it's a Level 5 thing (I plan to go back and play Dragon Warrior VIII now), but this is the closest I've ever felt like I was playing around in a top shelf animation. I was afraid that I'd find things to dislike. I expected to loathe Drippy...and the story hook seemed cliche...and an anime world with puns around every corner? please...

Then I played it and fell in love with it, Drippy is gold, the story is amazing so far, and everywhere I go the gorgeous world forces me to spend as much time admiring as playing.

Drippy is gold. Every single "serious" conversation you can find him in the background doing something hilarious. Trying on an easter bonnet, chillin' on the spell book throwing back babanas, spinning over until he falls down ... it's the kind of touch that only a talented movie studio could bring to the table.

I made it to the coastal town last night before I hung it up. Does anyone know if you can change the default battle tactics for other party members? The AI is...well...stupid.

"I have 50MP! Let me burn 15MP on a physical attack on a weak-ass trash mob! Wheeee!"

Yes. In battle look at your selected character's scroll wheel at the bottom of the screen, there should be one labeled 'Tactics'. There's a good number of options you can toggle for each NPC, including Defensive, Healer, Take on weakest enemy, target the enemy you engage, and more. I read that you can adjust these options outside of battle (someone said on the Overworld map?), but I haven't figured it out yet.

Later in the game you get an even more important instant stance select via Up/Down on the D-Pad. This lets you immediately put your whole party in Defense mode or All Out Attack mode with a single button press. Invaluable when AI party members are too stupid to defend against enemy Special attacks. I personally think it should have been included from the start, but there you have it.

On another note, this game is magical!

Yeah, that's what I was looking for, out-of-battle changes (i.e. "default"). GameFAQs seems iffy as to whether it can be done. I'll keep an eye out in the overworld screen.

This game IS magical. I could not agree more with Min on Drippy being hilarious during emotional and intense scenes.

I skimmed and forgot who asked about grinding.... but (I have not tried it) from the start they have an "easy" mode that says something about just wanting to enjoy the story. I assume you could play that if you did not want to grind? Not sure...

Anyway I am not as far as some, but I just finished all my "side" quests after making it to the desert.

Spoiler:

off to the temple of trials for me!

So after writing telling them I wanted to cancel my order I got a nice form email saying that my order was shipping! So now I will have the wizard's edition and a regular one. Of course the regular one will be here today so I wonder if I can put off opening it until the other edition comes?

My willpower has failed me. Amazon order placed.

I submitted an email through their customer service form yesterday morning. Still haven't heard a thing.

Same. There's a phone number kicking around as well and I was on hold for two hours last night while reading / playing games. I'm not sure there's anything that can be done.

I think the thing I'm most annoyed about is that I took vacation time specifically to have a nice chunk of uninterrupted time for playing Ni No Kuni.

Blah. #firstworldproblems?

I wouldn't call that a first world problem. I mean sure, it's not like you're battling Malaria or anything, but vacation time is a precious benefit and yours got effectively taken from you by shoddy business practices. I don't see it as being any different from someone selling a farmer some fertilizer, and later they discover it's cyanide and it kills 1/4 of their crops. Digital River is a group of sheisters.

I'm finally going to get back to this tonight, now that my wife is back. Can't wait!

The funny thing is that the longer this drags on the less I want to play the game. I was already going to sell my Wizard Edition at cost to someone who got hosed by this whole deal. I refuse to buy a copy until I know that my order is completely dead. I can literally imagine a scenario where weeks from now my Wizard Edition arrives and no one here wants it because they're already playing the game. I won't want to be "that guy" who puts the game up on eBay to try and make extra money. So I guess it will go in a closet until later. Really turned off by this whole thing. I'll have Fire Emblem in my hands before Ni No Kuni at this rate. By that point I'm not sure I'll care.

I'm on a boat.

So my Amazon order (placed Tuesday) is already delivered. My DigitalRiver/Namco order placed in August - still not shipped. Do I start playing my Amazon version or do I wait? I could send the Amazon one back right away and save that money, or I could sell the Wizard Edition when it gets here...

What would you do?

My Amazon order is getting here tomorrow, but Namco sent me a second email saying my order was definitely cancelled. I'm not surprised at all. At least I'll get to play this weekend.

Yeah. This is true. I just feel a bit guilty sometimes for not taking it a bit more in stride.

Oh, a friend of mine ordered after I did and just got a shipping notification. So happy about how well this is going!

Glad to hear people are enjoying it, though. Sounds like I'll be really pleased when I do finally get to dig into the damn thing!
