Ascension (iOS) Gaming League (New Tourney starting Jan 14, 2013!)

Been a little busy this week. Ill propose a new rule set for the upcoming tournament and ask for feedback from everyone shortly.

Any updates on this?

There was that one update where someone asked about updates.

I'm ready for another tournament whenever someone is ready to organize!

Did anyone list Ascension on their GWJ GOTY lists? Because we play this damn thing all the time and probably should have.

Yep, more than one of us.

Yup, my #2. Did I ever send you an invite?

I don't think so. Are you sure you want to put yourself through that?

=)

Hit me up if you want more games too. I've let all my current games slide into default due to some crappy time mamanagement on my part and life getting in the way (sorry all I was playing), but I should be OK now to get my game on.

I'm playing as well. Toddland GWJ

It did occur to me, but I think I started playing it back in 2011, and the 2012 GOTY thread here asked that we vote for only games that we first picked up in 2012, IIRC. Definitely a GOTY caliber game, though!

I'm still playing as well, hit up shoptroll on Game Center if you want to play me.

Maybe if we keep begging, Big Red will drop all of the important things in his life and come back to organize this for us.

Please?

If bigred doesn't show up wanting to organize it again in the next couple days, I'll step up. How's that sound?

I'll sign up.

My vote would be for 1 day time limits per person, but I may be in the minority on that. With a 3 day timer on a best of 3 match, a round could theoretically last up to 18 days. A 1 day time limit could drop that to a week. I guess that's why the 'official' 2012 Ascension tournament had 1 day time limits, at 1 game per round. I definitely prefer a Best of Three setup, and I didn't find a 1 day timer to be too difficult to work with (and I was in Mexico for a few of those days).

Challonge definitely is the way to go.

ps.
I also vote for no ties. Whomever Ascension says is the winner, should be the winner.

I would have trouble with a 1-day timer -- if I don't happen to catch my opponent online at the same time that I'm online and we play out the game in real time, it tends to be tough to get more than a few turns per day in. (Although my situation may be unusual; I don't play while at work, and I also tend not to play while my young kids are awake, which leaves only a window of 2-3 hours later in the evening to get turns in.)

3 days makes it easier to either get lucky and catch my opponent online one of those evenings, or else get enough turns in here and there to get the game finished.

+1 to this. Add in an 13-18 hour time differential between the US and Australia, and it gets even trickier (although minimal issue for all matches so far, but it was the 3 day timer that worked in our collective favours).

Ive been away from it for too long, I'd definitely like to get back into some Ascension. Add me to the list of people interested in a new tournament, probably 3 day timer as well.

I will play again, but a 1-day timer is too short, what with work, kids and family obligations.

It seems like there is a consensus for 3-day timers at least. That maybe means best of 3 matchups are a bad idea? Double elimination can also result in long delays, as one or two slow matches can gum everything up (that was my experience in the summoner wars tournament we had anyway). So maybe that means a Swiss tournament like we had last time, or a league set up where everyone plays everyone once?

Whatever makes sense. I would add that while long delays are not optimal, several of us are playing Ascension anyway, so the worst possible scenario (some of you peeps are slow, for real) really isn't the worst thing in the world.

Hey guys, I just got back from a long holiday and wasn't checking the boards. I'm unpacking and settling in tonight but can have a new tournament proposal typed up tomorrow night. I'm excited to get back into this..and maybe win a few matches.

Yeah, I'd rather it be slow than be eliminated in 1 match rounds.

I agree. As much as I like Ascension, I'm still not sold that it is all that balanced in one off encounters. Best of 3 really smooths it out.

I'm in and vote for best of 3s, Ascension-dictated wins.

I finally picked up Ascension back a few weeks ago when the base game was free, and quickly bought the available expansions. Very interested in a tournament, though a complete newb with regard to multiplayer.

I'm absolutely in for another tournament and the best of three, Ascension deciding the winner.

Proposed Tournament

Match format:

Deck: COTG, RoTF, and SoS varying between rounds

Format: Best of 3

Timer: 3 Days

Match Tie-Breaker: In game (player with second turn)

Tournament Format:

Qualification Round: 4 matches in Swiss Tournament format (similar to previous tournament). Essentially, you will play a best of 3 match and then based on your results you will be paired the following round against someone with similar standings. Winners move to the top and losers fall to the bottom. A player will be awarded 3 points for winning a match and 0 for losing a match. There are no ties. There will also be no byes this tournament.

Round 1 Deck: CoTG

Round 2 Deck: SoS

Round 3 Deck: CoTG + RoTF

Round 4 Deck: SoS + RoTF

Playoff Round: Depending on the number of players signing up, the top 20-40% will qualify for a single elimination playoff with the same match format above (best of 3, etc, etc). I will ask for feedback on deck selection and decks for each playoff round will be determined.

What do people think? I'm overloaded today with work (around 11pm here and taking a break to post this) but will update OP and thread title tomorrow assuming everyone is ok with this.

Sounds good for me. I would prefer the same deck to be used throughout, but it is not something I would drop out of the tournament for. If we keep it as is, I would just suggest that you put, in giant red text, the decks to be used after each round is completed and a new one starts.

Sounds good to me, I'm in.
