NCAA Football 2013-2014 discussion

Hoppa, you are literally the only person I've seen saying that Mack will be back. What makes you so confident?

Its much more fun to pile on the SEC and ESPN... this from ESPN stats an information:

Despite two of its top four teams losing on Saturday, the Pac-12 remains the No. 1 conference in the Football Power Index. The Pac-12 has four of the top 10 teams in the FPI, a ratings system that measures overall team efficiency.

Note the FPI is actually operated by ESPN, and the tone of this sentence is almost one of incredulity. I love how they forget to mention the obvious... That the top 4 fricken Pac-12 teams played each other!. OSU lost to stanfurd and fUCLA lost to Oregon. Guess what's going to happen this weekend... HALF OF THE TOP 2 TEAMS IN THE PAC-12 TEAMS ARE GOING TO LOSE! Because in our conference we have 9 conference games out of a maximum possibility of 11 what a novel concept!

2004 anyone?

We will not speak of that abomination. :P

I think your definition of abomniation (losing to OU) is different than my definition.. watching mack brown whore himself into a rose bowl over Pac-10 Cal.

Confidence? Not exactly. Knowing that we're not lucky enough to be rid of Mack that easily? Yes. The early season furor has subsided, changes have been made, and the OU game was a win. The fan-base has been placated. Burning Swoopes' red-shirt got some folks muttering a bit, but Texas fans know by now that Ash and McCoy (and Overstreet) aren't a real solution.

Believe me, I want Mack to make way for a younger, more talented coach. Maybe if he doesn't manage ten wins with Swoopes starting next season, my dreams will come true and we'll lure Sumlin away from you.

I said it a month ago. My reasoning had nothing to do with Brown's coaching, but with the AD situation. If the current AD isn't retiring until late summer (the schedule I saw), he isn't going to fire a coach and bring in a new one for the incoming AD. That'd be awful for that incoming coach. The new AD is going to want to hire "his guy," in the parlance.

Here in the state of Texas, we don't let our ADs hire football coaches. We leave that to our biggest donors and/or political players.

Do we need to dig them? They won a game where OU played sloppy and came out flat footed, and are still considered scrub league this year.

Seriously. WTF happened to Bell? Also, the dude is a monster. Who has a QB taller than all of his O-line?

Boogle, any win over OU is Good. You guys have gotten plenty of gimmes from Mack in the past. Now it's our turn.

Poor decision making combined with bad play calls.
Look at the play calling in the tech game this last weekend. Compare that to the slants and naked shotgun sets that kept getting called in the Texas game.
I'll similarly take any win over UT, but lets be honest, this is nearing the Bradford injured in the 4th quarter year and that's why we haven't heard a large amount of gloating.
(see also terrible hold on the Punt return td. That happens when you play UT in the BIG 12)

Georgia/Florida probably doesn't mean much this year, and both teams are likely to lose a player to a blown knee while the teams get off the bus, but still.

*#%^ Florida!

Your weekend schedule:

Top 25 games
No. 21 Michigan at No. 22 Michigan State, 3:30 (ABC)
No. 18 Oklahoma State at No. 15 Texas Tech, 7 (Fox)
No. 7 Miami (FL) at No. 3 Florida State, 8 (ABC)

ACC game of the week not listed above
UNC at N.C. State, 12:30 (always a good game even when both teams stink like they do this year)

SEC game of the week
Georgia vs. Florida, 3:30 (CBS)
... The cocktail party! So what if neither team is ranked.

BCS watch
No. 4 Ohio State at Purdue, noon (zzzzzz)
... Somehow Alabama, Oregon, Stanford and Baylor are all off this weekend; who the hell scheduled that?!
(NB: Baylor and Stanford both play next Thursday night, which is shaping up to be a pretty good night of football)

Verdict: Decent enough.

I wonder when was the last time neither team in the Cocktail Party was ranked...

2010, but before that you have to go back to the 70s.

Thanks ferret... I figured it is pretty rare.

Louisville off too. Time to catch up on video games.

In the same spirit of Stele.

Game Carlbear95 is attending this week:
#39 Arizona @ #97 California (12;30, Pac-12)

We're merely 14 point home dogs in this one.

Utah and BYU are both off this week. Kind of strange. The good news for Utah is that our QB's hand can fully heal. And we can't lose again.

FTFY.

It's only a game if there are two competitive teams.

I feel your pain. The pre-season AP basketball polls came out today, which means the college football season officially ended today in N.C.

There's a thread for that.

I'll be at the Arkansas/Auburn game, I think the Hogs have a shot. We'll see...

Good luck!

Spoiler:

Auburn by 20.

So I tuned in to OSU - Purdue, hoping to see OSU take a loss...pick six on the first play of the game. Barf.

Did I just hear that stat correctly? Arkansas has given up 111 unanswered points?!

True. Gave up a ton in a row to S Carolina, got shut out by Bama, now Auburn has scored first in this one.

Also what the hell is Georgia doing? Let Florida back into this. I had quit watching for an hour or more thinking it was over.

Streak over now, by the way.

All right... bring on the Canes!

See you guys in a few hours (or tomorrow)

Gah, they completely took their foot off the gas and let the Gators back in the game.

On the other hand, running the last 8+ minutes off the clock to end the game was nice.

I'm not going to complain too much about winning a third in a role against Slitherin though.

Well Miami gets one before the half. 21-14 FSU.

I watched all of the Notre Dame-Navy game yesterday and have this to say: that Navy team is incredibly well-coached. Rampant cut-blocks notwithstanding, naturally. Still, they know how to run the option and did so perfectly yesterday. They committed no penalties and had no turnovers (although one pitch went awry and they recovered another fumble).

They were helped by the fact that ND's defense has been decimated with injuries, and they lost another 3 yesterday. Seems like two are for the season. Still, everyone's injured.

Fun game to watch. Except as a nervous ND fan.

Woot FSU

I was at Quinton Stone's house and turned it on. He was like "Who turned football on at my house?" hehe
