NCAA Football 2013-2014 discussion

I see lots of SEC fans calling for the same move. I've said before I'd like it. The games are terrible.

No kidding...and they make season ticket holders pay for that tripe! Glad to hear the fans are calling for it...love to see the ADs listen.

The fact that Alvarez is the one announcing that the Big Ten is going to stop scheduling cupcakes is hilarious.

Wife is away for work/family... what better to do on a Friday night but Cal open spring practice.

Never been to a practice before, there was about 150 fans/blogger/spies in the stadium. Biggest question mark for Cal is QB. A lot of QBs have been getting reps, but today I saw highly recruited freshman Jarrod Goff get most of the snaps with what appeared to be the first team. RS Frosh Zach Kline looked pretty good throwing laser beams. Also WR Kenny Lawler looked good going up to get balls.

This was also the first practice in pads so the D was able to mix it up a bit too.

Oh that reminds me. ESPN announced the locations for spring GameDay Bus Tour, starting April 10, the other day.

Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Louisville, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, and Notre Dame.

Not too shabby company for my Cardinals to be in eh?

Well last years #1 backup Alan Bridgeford has decided to leave school. While I hate to see anyone transfer out, he had no playing future at Cal and was getting very limited reps in practice. Also, it says something if you can't start ahead of Zach Maynard... one of our worst quarterbacks in recent memory. Good luck to him wherever he goes. Not sure what eligibility rules are if you leave because of coaching change, but he has at least 1 year left.

On that topic: Gunner Kiel, the #1 QB in last year's class, is leaving ND. Maybe Les Miles can make fun of him again (he did a last minute change from IU --> LSU --> ND). Still, he was behind an incumbent starter who played well down the stretch and in front of a very talented incoming player. Wanted a better shot at starting.

Tennessee lands 5 star RB Jalen Hurd for 2014. We haven't had a decent RB in years. This coaching staff has got me pumped for the next couple of seasons.

Nice get!

I'm shocked, absolutely stunned, to find out that Auburn paid players and altered their grades! Could not have seen this coming at all!

I'll also be totally surprised when they get a slap on the wrist.

This probably is just contained to Auburn, I imagine. The rest of the SEC has a healthy perspective on the importance of football.

Crickets on Auburn covering up players being addicted to "Spice"? Does this mean it's possible Oregon "won" and broke the SEC streak?

I don't know. The manufactured marijuana story? I've seen some stuff talking about them helping devise a test, and something about false positives before the test was actually decided on and implemented.

So I'm not sure about that mess yet.

The other story, the money and the grades... well I guess the NCAA will decide on it in a year or so... the slowest organization in history, always penalizing schools years down the road.

First time I read this, I thought you were suggesting that Auburn underestimated the importance of football.

Okay, there is very little going on right now with the exception of spring games and the upcoming draft, so here's an hilarious exchange I saw on an Aggie message board that I really wanted to share.

It's in the context of a high school quarterback that the Aggies are recruiting.

Dude #1: I'm asking this with all the love intended; but is he another Matt Davis and Kohl Stewart that will need 2-3 years to compete for backup spot or is he more like Ken Hill and Manziel that will be 1 year and ready? Reason I ask is he is offered early from LSU and their qb record is not a great.

Dude #2: Manziel was a one year and ready type of guy?

Dude #3: Yes, Manziel won the heisman after a RS year

Cal unveiled some new Nike designed branding today. My take... non-offensive... The new Bear image is kinda cool, reminds me of the Memphis Grizzlies a bit.

If Gene "this job sucks" Chizik was involved I'm not surprised. I know a lot of poeple that would love to say the Ducks won that day.

Sorry DSG, Alabama's already claimed it and it's being printed on T-Shirts!

Anyone else watching Texas A&M's spring game on ESPN right now?

Why on Earth would I watch the "Let's call plays to make Johnny Football look the best" show?

Jake Heaps and Justin McKay looked awesome in Kansas' spring game today. That's pretty meaningful, right?

They were playing it at the sports book I was at. I kept wondering if people were betting on it.

DeVante Parker had 4 catches for 100+ yards and 2 TDs in the Louisville spring game today. Teddy Bridgewater went 16/20 for a crapton of yards with no INTs. But the best part was the post-game interview I saw where he rated himself a C for the day. Said his timing was off on some stuff, and he did have those incompletions that you can't have to make an A game. Really looking forward to the fall.

Seeing reports of 33-35k for the game today, which I think is good for us. A little disappointed it wasn't closer to sold out, especially with the basketball team there at halftime. But they did just have a celebration on Wed for both basketball teams at the Yum Center that sold out at 23k or so. And however many people just went to New Orleans and Atlanta this weekend for the final four.

Still, you'd think 50K people would show up for $1 beers whether they liked football or not, or no matter how much money they had already spent this week. :p

At least we also had 4,500 people at the baseball stadium right next door for that game today too. I think that's our highest attendance at a regular season baseball game not vs UK.

Pretty good day for those who made it out. Wish I could have been there.

True to your word, you didn't watch it, because they didn't let Johnny run it at all. They had him practice being a pocket passer, and got reps for our newer WRs and RBs.

He did throw a block for one of our backs that had our coaches telling him to never do that again.

You're in the ACC now. You'll get used to your feeling of disappointment about football.

Remember, it only counts when it's basketball season.

And congrats on being the first ACC addition since Georgia Tech to actually matter in hoops!

Bwah???

I don't even...

I don't know either Ego. Looking forward to Louisville vs FSU determining the Atlantic division champ and then facing off against Miami or VT in the ACC Championship game every year.

Well, it shall be fun. I hope we will get back to where we belong on a permanent basis.

Welcome to the league - rook

You know which football division your school is in?! You're taking this football thing waaaay too seriously. N.C. State Fan still hasn't figured out that there's no such thing as the Southern Division. (Shhhh, don't spoil the joke!)

Seriously, though, welcome to the conference. I'm hoping you don't play down to the level of your competition like those Florida teams managed to do.* We had much higher hopes for Miami than that. We certainly didn't expect them to win a conference title in basketball first.

*Yes, I know FSU won about 20 ACC titles in a row. But then they stopped winning them until this season. That's what I mean by that.

The ACC will be the Big 12 East eventually anyway.
