NCAA Football 2013-2014 discussion

You guys do way better with 3* non rated qbs, why switch it up?

Fair point. Ryan Tannehill (Dolphins), Jerrod Johnson (Seahawks), and Johnny Manziel (G.O.A.T.) were all 3*, but hey, we already switched it up for the class of 2013 - Kenny Hill is a 4*.

That's just how Sumlin rolls, I suspect.

Technically about last season, but Florida lost $840k on Sugar Bowl.

The culprit: The Gators athletic department was unable to sell its allotment of 17,500 tickets. There was a sizable amount of unsold tickets.

Ah, national media love. I could get used to this.

Tim Brando predicts Louisville will win BCS Championship this fall.

He's predicting y'all won't have to play an SEC team in the championship game. Man, the playoffs can't get here soon enough.

Yeah I think he's a little crazy thinking Ohio St will win 23 games in a row going back to last year. It's much more likely to be A&M or Alabama coming out of the West or maybe Florida from the East, whoever wins the championship game.

We have found common ground!

I think all that JF was saying on twitter is that he can't wait for the Arkansas game Sept. 28. Should be a lot of fun.

Well played.

Woo! Look what came in the mail today!

Is it football yet?

My condolences.

Go Cal! Knock off some national champ hopefuls, would you?

Well if we knock them all off then someone will have to do the same to us

Just beat Ohio State!

What is the word in Aggieland, Fed. Are folks concerned that Johnny Football has lost focus? This latest blunder, getting sent home from the Manning football camp has to be a little worrisome.

I can say that if I had achieved that kind of status at 20-years-old, I don't know if I could have reeled my head back in. If he can settle down and have a strong season, that will be impressive, regardless to how his offseason has gone.

But he is really getting to be the master of the false apology.

Johnny Manziel: 'I just overslept'

Manziel said he spoke to his coach, Kevin Sumlin, recently, apologizing for the negative light he put on his program.

"I told him I felt like the deal really got blown out of proportion, and I'm sorry for that, for the way it was spun and the way it was taken out of context," he said. "I never meant to make A&M look bad, or especially him. Me and Coach Sumlin have such a special relationship, and I never would have wanted to upset him."

And then there was that random tweet about how he can't wait to get away from College Station. As a big fan, I'm wondering what's going on in the land of Johnny Football.

Yeah this thread has been surprisingly quiet the last couple of days, while ESPN has been making a bunch of noise.

Personally I suspect that once he's back on campus and in the regular grind of practice with teammates around, he'll probably be fine. How old is he, 21 or so? How many of us were that focused at that age?

The pictures that showed him out the night before this showed him out with AJ McCarron, but I haven't really heard the news stories about him losing focus. I'm sure there's an argument that McCarron has been around longer and may be a bit more mature, but none of us can really say that for sure.

I think part of the issue is not that what he's doing is really that unusual, but the stature he's been imbued with as a result of winning the Heisman last year. And I can understand not really wanting to give that much an apology if you don't really really feel it's a big deal. Hell, as a college student, I called in sick one day due to a killer hangover on a Monday morning (don't ask). I wouldn't really begrudge Manziel a day off if he'd spent the evening being a traditional college student.

Personally, if I were an Aggie fan (I'm not, but I like their coach...and grudgingly would admit to liking at least one of their fans ... yes, that's you, Fed), I wouldn't worry too much about it. Hell, I don't even think he rates as a Gronk-style worry.

That turned out to be a parking ticket. Undergrads always get ticked off at having to face consequences like real adults.

Oh, that's funny. That sounds like the kind of outsized response a modern 20-something would make about a parking ticket. Is he even 20? He wont the Heisman as a redshirt Freshman, right? As opposed to a true Freshman.

Well, whether it's an "outsized response" for a 20-something student, it definitely elicited an out-sized response from the sports media!

I've been assuming he's nearly 21 given the number of pictures of him in bars.

Not surprising, given the legal cases. Guess that means College Hoops 2k will never be back either.

Noooooooooooo!

So they're trying to punt on the O'Bannon case?

I am of two minds on this. On the one hand, I have enjoyed several of the NCAA Football games (more so than Madden), but on the other I have a lot of trouble with the idea that EA uses the likenesses of the players, but the players get zero money for it. In the end, I have to side with the players on this one. Guess I will pick up NCAA 14, since it will be the last one.

I think since that refers to past games, they're probably trying to avoid future battles over this sort of issue.

EDIT: Never mind.

Yeah. That's what I meant. They obviously have to keep fighting the O'Bannon case. But it's clear that they don't want to be in the business of being "employers" of student athletes and this is a great example of that.

I figured it would come to this eventually. I don't think there is enough money to deal with the headaches involved in licensing college sports. That's why there is no college basketball game.

While there are ways to work around the NCAA dropping out, we have to consider that if it was profitable, the NCAA would still be in the game. I really do think this is it for a good long time. I don't think anyone wants to move forward until the court case is settled. And I suspect the case will settle in a manner that still makes it too expensive to release college sports games.

And maybe that's the way it *should* be. As much as I love this series and prefer it to Madden, I do believe there's something wrong with allowing students to put their lives at risk, benefitting from their likeness and offering no compensation.

The part that boggles my mind is why the NCAA never found a way to put together a trust or a "pension" of some kind for NCAA players. Would it be that costly to take some of the proceeds and funnel them into accounts the players couldn't touch until later? Maybe it would be across all sports. Maybe this is just one of those loopholes that was going to die someday. It makes me really wish there was competition for the NFL. In a way, EA was competing with itself. I didn't like Madden, but I really liked NCAA. So at least I had *a* football game I enjoyed playing. After this year I'll have none.
