How is Teo not in on this? Is this one of those "I have a girlfriend in Canada / Summer Camp" relationships?

According to the story Te'o was (probably) in on the ... I don't want to call it a hoax, exactly.

Assuming it's true, it's pathological. Teo and his father told various reporters about meetings and phone calls with a person who apparently doesn't exist.

I am damn close to sending people presents right now. Update your Steam wish lists.

(No, not really.)

There was a statement from Te'o on Sportscenter just a few minutes ago about how he was apparently tricked and had no idea, and how he hopes others learn to be careful online.

It just doesn't jive with all the other interview stuff about them meeting in person. Was all that just lies to cover up the embarrassment of an "online only" relationship?

I think it was just a sob story to maybe make him stand out.

EDIT: Hell if he's already making elaborate lies this young maybe if football doesn't work out he can be a cyclist.

Yeah, the Lance Armstrong jokes are writing themselves.

Maybe Teo can get a job with the Livestrong people? He's also been fraudulent, and affected by cancer.

QFT with respect to being pathological. Wow. Crazy stuff.

Fed, before you gloat over this, please realize I don't idolize the kid. He had a great season on the field, and that was exciting. But, if all this is true, it's incredibly embarrassing for all associated with ND (myself included).

Football and Teo specifically aren't my main attachment to ND. My investment in ND doesn't depend on wins or losses of the football team.

If it turns out the thing was orchestrated by Teo, the University needs to denounce it.

Crazy stuff.

I guess what I'm saying is have your fun, but you'll not mostly get a rise out of me about it. If he's involved, I'll be happy for you to bash him and may even join in. If he did try to pull a fast one on everyone, what a dumb ass. Embarrassing for him. Embarrassing for ND.

But one guy that I dont know isn't gonna tarnish the whole school for me.

firesloth - Did you think my "with apologies to firesloth" was insincere? I like you! We played Gears together, back in the day. I meant that.

My joy is all to do with Teo, as are each of these posts.

I think this whole thing, while very entertaining, will last this week at the most. By the time the conference championship games are over on Sunday, it will have blown over. He didn't profit from it, I doubt it made him play any better, and at the end of the day no one but his pride was hurt in all of this. Other than a slap on the wrist from the ND administration formaking a fool of himself and the university to some extent, its a non-issue.

The jokes I'm sure will be great for the next few days though

Oh, he'll be hearing about this for a LONG time I'm willing to bet. I shudder when I think about what his rookie year is going to be like.

Well, he's graduated, so they have no ability to slap him on the wrist. I don't think he made a fool of the University until he told them a story that caused them to release a statement that sounded like he may have been duped.

Unless he was duped. Then he's certainly the fool. But, maybe just one who thought he was in love. If that's the case (signs point to no), I think we can all agree we've done dumb things thinking about members of the opposite sex...

I predict that this will be brought up by the color announcer every game when he makes his first tackle. Or gets run over by the likes of Trent Richardson or some other big back.

Many thanks, man. Always hard to read intent into internet postings, eh? That's why I posted the second follow-up. I got a good chuckle out of the first of the Lance & Teo comments.

Speaking of which, I've been playing a lot of Horde over the last two weeks...

From what I've read, there are a lot of statements that he won't be able to reconcile with never having met her.

NEW TOPIC! I promised Johnny Manziel and hotties. Here's one from Halloween:

And here's Johnny's girlfriend, model Sarah Savage:

I posted this in NFL thread but to good not to post here too.

Bye bye, Kaepernicking, here comes Te'oing

You guys know what's even more ludacris than a star linebacker making up a fake girlfriend for publicity?

Someone hired that joke of a coach John L Smith.

Bear made a Te'o topic, so maybe we can keep this one on actual football.

So can someone tell me why ESPN needed to apologize for Brent Musburger if it helped Katherine Webb land a nice gig?

They didn't. They apologize for Musburger, fire Rush Limbaugh, fire dude for accidental "chink in armor" caption, but simply elect not to renew the contract of unrepentant racist.

Oh, and they employ Skip Bayless.

Fed, I'm sure you've seen this, but I thought you'd appreciate it anyway...

He should have apologized to himself for being so embarrassing.

Don't forget they fired Hank Williams Jr too.

Not sure Skip Bayless belongs in the same list. His job is to debate and stir interest, and he stays away from politics and religion. Did he say one of your teams sucked or something?

I lol'ed, for realz.

Stele: Skip said the Aggies were the best team in football, so look for another reason.

I believe he also did a mea culpa after the title game about supporting Teo over Manziel for Heisman, so he got WAAAAAY ahead of the trend here.

Without the dead GF, would Te'o still have been a Heisman finalist? Would he still have swept the defensive awards over Jarvis Jones and Clowney?

He had a great season. But if people voted for him because of the story, they're idiots. That's like voting for Johnny Manziel because he had the nickname Johnny Football.

But, the people who vote probably watch more of the talk shows and Heisman voter polls from those shows than actual games. So if those shows were talking him up, that was probably enough. In which case they're still idiots.

Several Heisman voters have said the story played a large role in their votes, and that's after a day. Yes, they are idiots, but at least they're honest idiots. I'm sure there are many times more idiots who are not half so brave as to admit that.

Of course they vote partly based on the story. The year Desmond Howard won it was all about the big plays, the stage there in Michigan, the Heisman pose, etc. His stats are absolutely pedestrian.

http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/desmond-howard-1.html

Overall his stats are worse than the worst year in De'Anthony Thomas' young career.

http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/deanthony-thomas-1.html

Nevermind Charles Woodson and Gino Torretta. Story has always mattered.

Don't think there's many U$C fans here, but good luck with ex-Cal DC Clancy Pendergrast as your new defensive coordinator. In the 3 years he was at Cal, he was wildly inconsistent. I think everyone gives him all sorts of credit (deserved) for holding Oregon to 15 points in 2010, and in fairness we were saddled with such sad offenses the last 2 years that his guys were asked to do a lot more, but overall I didn't think he was that good. For every good series of plays, there was a series of awful defensive lapses. On many occasions, when we had opponents on 3rd-and-long, there would be a TE or slot receiver wide open in the middle of the field. Giving a first down would be lucky.. all too often it was a long pass that was a TD or put them into the red zone. We were decent at stopping the run, but we could not defend the middle of the field consistently.

I just want USC to continue sucking so we can hurry up and see who else is dumb enough to hire Lane Kiffen.

Has USC fired their AD yet? He's got to be nervous, right?

Charlie Strong extends contract.

$3.7 million, before incentives. He's the 7th highest paid coach in college football, and the highest paid in either the Big East or the ACC.
