Figured that I would put a propper thread for this since the dev kit release is almost out and it surly looks like it's getting lots of support. I am personally getting very excited about it.

Announced on Jan 11 Skyrim and Mirrors Edge will be Oculus Rift supported

I've told my wife we will need this.

I can only imagine the amount of vertigo I will get with Mirrors Edge in 360 deg viewing. Thats just nuts.

I'm hopeful it's going to be good as the idea could be awesome if executed well but I'm staying firmly in the skeptical camp until I get to see one in action myself. Stuff like this has been attempted and hyped before and it's always disappointed. It would be great if this is the one that can finally break out though.

Ok, watching the guy rolling around in the background with the OR on was cracking me up. I was waiting for him to fall out of his chair.

Hopefully there's some serious changes to the current design of the strap. Every video I've watched has the ski goggle strap going directly over the ears, and I can't do more than 10 minutes or so with direct pressure on my ears like that.

Looks cool, just uncomfortable as hell.

If a modder can do just this, Oculus Rift has a bright future:

Dev kits should be shipping soon but I probably won't see mine until May. I think in a year or two this thing will be huge.

Engadget hands on video of the dev unit that should start shipping anyday.

Holy hell do I want one of these when the consumer versions come out.

I got to try one of these on about a month ago and it was pretty cool. I was impressed by how light it was, lighter than my headset, and how the head tracking was absolutely smooth with no noticeable jitter. Although currently they only track head orientation, not translation. The stereoscopic effect was okay, that usually doesn't impress me too much. The nice part here is I didn't have any difficulty focusing the two images like you might have with 3D glasses in a movie theater. You do have to make sure that the lenses are in focus when you put the headset on, it's kind of like looking through binoculars. My biggest complaint is that it just looked a little pixelated compared to modern displays, but that's something you can get used to after about a minute and the commercial unit might have better resolution anyway.

Thanks for posting that. Awesome video! It did cool my interest on the Rift though...

When the Rift Kickstarter announced there would be Unity support, they never stated if it would be for the free or pro versions. I know a few people in my local game dev group that bought it on the assumption it would work on the free version. As a fellow hobbyist dev, there's no way I can afford the Rift hardware and a $1500 software license to build games for it so I guess I'll just wait to see if the consumer version takes off.

Forget about Unity...use UDK

Looks awesome!

Wrong thread.

That video just made me smile ear to ear the whole time. This confirms for me that it will be a mass market hit. It's much like the Wii Thanksgiving stories.

Whoa, this Guillotine simulation seems really interesting.

I know a guy who has a dev kit and I got to try it out on Friday. The speed on the motion detection is terrific. There was no latency. Using the controller to turn could be a little discombobulating though and when I ran up to a cliff and looked straight down, there was a lot of disorientation! And leaning back.

What's the take on who will acquire these guys? Microsoft? Google?

Day 1 buy.

Yeah, depending on price, I'll likely be in on Day 1 too. My wife's gonna kill me, then laugh at me.

I watched that video, for 30 seconds, the same way I would look at those Magic Eye 3d pictures, relaxed my eyes to thepoint where the two videos overlapped to create one image and Boom! 3D!
It was pretty amazing but I couldn't hold it for very long.

If more and more games use it I can see it being a purchase.

Remember, folks, Bonine does the same job as Dramamine, but with less tiredness...

I'm getting really impatient on my dev unit. I'm eager as hell to get my hands on this thing.

If there was a console implementation of this, I'd be in day 1.

PC gaming ain't for me though, so I'll pass on this, unless someone invites me over to their house to play with their one.

Got an update that my dev unit is in the next batch to be shipped.
So, soon-ish I guess

I tried it out just after Stone. The first thing I did (of course) was run up to the edge of that cliff. I wobbled and nearly fell over in real life. Definitely something to use while sitting down, as that will help you orient yourself better.

It was really nifty. After taking it off, I had tunnel vision for a minute or two as if my brain felt it couldn't trust what my eyes were seeing anymore. That was an interesting feeling.

Damn I'm jelly. Mine probably won't be here till the end of June.

I am so ready for this wave of VR, complete with the Omni Treadmill (or similar, I'd personally like to be able to take bigger strides)

and hand movement hardware (gloves soon?)

I'd love to work for a place thats working on Oculus games. If you're reading this and you can use a QA/Quality/Usability expert with 10 years of lead experience, send me a message

When does this thing go on sale for regular people? Looks super cool
