The Binding of Isaac

I have Sheol and Chest runs done with all the characters. I have all the challenges done. I have collected all the items (Guppy's Hairball was tricky to unlock and then took forever to drop). Still no Platinum God.
My Stats page says I have 94/97 secrets and I'm missing three achievements (not including Platinum God), one each for no damage runs through Caves, Depths, and The Womb. This makes me think I need to get those achievements for Platinum God.
So, I guess now to focus on my no damage runs. You only need to clear bosses (not the entire floor), so I might get lucky :-/

Have you got the achievement for becoming a cat yet? Because there are at least 3 hidden achievements for doing particular things like that in the game

Yep, that's how you unlock Guppy's Hairball. I did some digging on the wiki and it look like the three missing secrets are indeed for the no damage runs.

Do you know if you can get the no damage run achievements while doing the challenges? It seems like it might be easier if you start with flying for example.

F#$%.

Vanilla didn't count the no-damage =_=;

Can you use a shovel to help for the no-damage run?

Which do you think would work better, Isaac with D6 to ensure favorable items, or Judas for increased damage (the low health isn't an issue for no-damage runs).

Here's my reasoning: The wiki interprets "100% the game" as all items and secrets collected. I have had all the items. My stats page shows 94/97 secrets unlocked. The wiki page shows there are secrets pages for my three missing no damage runs.
I take this to mean once I collect those secrets I will have 100%ed the game and will unlock Platinum God.
I think it's going to take a while because depending on my build it's tough to go a few rooms without taking a small hit. It will likely take a combination of flying, spectral tears of some sort, a lucky run of rooms, favorable layout, and lucky path choice (or early drops of compass and treasure map). Oh, and devil's room deals count as damage.

Nope, the shovel doesn't work. A floor is considered complete for these purposes only after defeating the floor boss.
I'm choosing to go with Isaac and the D6 just to increase my chances of good item drops. Health matters a little since I'm trying to grab everything from the spiked door and spike floor rooms (if they appear) on the first two floors.

So, I don't know a lot about this game. First thing I couldn't figure out, though- so is there no save game? If I want to play the game I have to go until I die or else just forfeit what I've done? If I found a collectible would that save if I quit at least?

You can't save your progress on a single run. A single run should take about an hour on average. Your progress in terms of unlocking items and characters is saved across runs. The ultimate goal of the game is really to unlock everything, which requires multiple runs.

Thanks. In my first few runs I was just having some questions about the basic systems which you totally answered.

Also, wow. What an amazing game. All I want to do is play this game. Any good suggestions on articles about the designer? I'm really curious about some of the choices he made and would love to read about some of his motivations.

I don't have a lot that is specifically BOI specific, but here is a bunch of stuff I have stumbled across:

  • Here is a video I found a few days ago. It actually highlights "The Basement Collection", which is a collection of older games that the designer, Edmund McMillen, made before Super Meat Boy.
  • Here is another interview I saw a while ago, I think he talks about Binding of Isaac in there for like a half hour.
  • Also if you haven't seen it yet, make sure you see the excellent Indie Game the Movie.

There's also this article on Eurogamer, and this one on IndieGames.com.

I've been playing this off and on for over a year and this is seriously the best troll engine ever designed. I just recently got the steam version (had the humblebundle version for a long time) and it says I've logged 40 hours. It claims I've never beat mom but I have unlocked items that require I beat her... so even outside the game, it trolls you.

I love it when they give you item combos like guppy's paw, whore of babylon and mom's pearl very early but then the next three floors are all red heart drops and you're fighting mom with 3 spirit hearts. Or you get a basement XL first thing but not a single key anywhere to be found and 5 locked spots...

They have a poll up about rebirth: http://blog.nicalis.com/2012/11/bind...

And it asks what feature you want most that's not in the pc version currently.

I want a stat for "Troll Engine" so I can at least see how much the game is F'ing me in the A.

I finally got 10 mom kills last night and unlocked ? (blue baby) and then spent 27 rerolls through the first two floors to get at least a base combo of items I felt capable of moving on with. I did manage to conquer itlives mostly on the shoulders of level 4 meatboy but died shortly after in sheol. Unlocked the d6 for that though, which was my goal all this time. It was almost bedtime at that point but I wanted to play with the d6 a little and holy crap that changes everything. I rerolled holy water into polyphemus on the first floor, and got quad shot on the second. With some tears upgrades and book of rev, I went all the way through to the cathedral and stomped blue baby. What a thrilling run.

Perfect example. Check out these images.

How can I have the d6 unlocked and register 0 mom kills?

DanB wrote:

Not really. They need to redo the game to get it on consoles, and they pretty much pushed Flash to the breaking point. Many of the game's bugs are due to how Flash handles variables and other quirks. They literally can't add more content to the existing game because it will break.

Plus, they can add co-op, it'll run noticeably better with native code, and they plan to add more content with the remake.

I want the remake yesterday. Can't wait!

In the survey, I put down my most wanted feature as an ability to save a run and come back to it later. I understand why they don't do it, but man, the fact that each individual run can be over in a few minutes or in two hours makes it hard to fit the game into a sitting sometimes.

EDIT: And yeah, it's really not a pointless remake at all. BoI will be so much better when it's off Flash. Not to mention they're adding another expansion's worth of content.

I stopped playing after I got my first chest kill with Isaac. Fired this up last night and first time took Magdalene all my second chest kill.

Ah, I missed the point that this was a port.

I still feel pretty meh about that. At 120 odd hours, I'm not especially convinced that I need more content or co-op

Demyx wrote:

I could've sworn it was due to a limitation of Flash. I think FTL allows you to do a temporary quick save so you can interrupt the game and come back to it later.

Really hoping there will be a way to import my profile from the Flash version into the "remake". As much as I love this game, I'm not exactly willing to throw out all the progress I've made with the unlocks.

I spent a fair amount of time this weekend trying to get the last couple of no-damage achievements. So brutally hard, but I'm thiiiisssss close to Platinum God...

You don't need the no damage achievements for Platinum God. All items, all secrets and all chest runs IIRC

Hmmm, I wonder what I'm missing then... I did all chest runs and I'm pretty sure I have all items, so maybe one of my achievements bugged and didn't fire? Bleh.

I think the secrets include the no damage runs. You don't need them for Golden God, but you do for Platinum God. I believe I lamented this fact earlier in the thread.
Edit: It's on this page.

Thx Phish. I will keep plugging away. Although I found out my Eve's Bird Foot Achievement hasn't fired

I'm pretty sure you have to do the hidden achievements not the no damage runs.

List of the main 64 secrets at
http://bindingofisaac.wikia.com/wiki...

Check you've got all of those before trying for the no damage achievements. Also the internet seems reasonably full of people who expected to get platinum for for all secrets and all items and it not working.

Well DanB, I think you're wrong, and here's why:
1) I have 94/97 achievements unlocked according to the game. The 98th of 97 is Platinum God.
2) I checked, one by one, through the wiki secrets pages and confirmed I have all of them except for three of the four no-damage runs.
3) I checked in game and confirmed I have all the items (198 total).
4) I have completed all the challenges.
5) I have unlocked all the characters.
6) I have completed Chest and Sheol runs with all the characters.
I've given up on getting the no-damage achievements at this point. Although there are a few overnight "pauses" and certainly a few where I've walked away from a good run for a few hours, Steam says I have 511 hours in game. I think I got my money's worth

Is it masochistic to keep playing when you do an entire xl floor holding the rusted key and get zero key drops?

ibdoomed wrote:

I pretty much always play until I die no matter how awful the early floors are (example: XL Basement, no keys or bombs, two +range drops from the bosses). So maybe?

That's probably why I have such a high death count. Yeah, let's go with that and not the fact that I am terrible at games :p

The only time I quit before dying was when I was trying to get Guppy's Hairball to drop. This game does a good job of making you feel like you're just a good drop or two away from a killer build.

Every time I make it past the first couple of floors and then die, I'm thinking, "How could I die with THAT build? No way am I going to get another one as good."

And then the very next run I'm saying the exact same thing...
