The Players Association and MLB have worked out a one-time amendment to Rule 10.22(a) to avoid the embarrassing prospect of Melky Cabrera winning the NL batting title.

That's great news.

Huh, it turns out this is at his behest. That's somewhat respectable.

I wonder how much of that "at his request" stuff is at the urging of the MLBPA and his agents. I wouldn't be surprised if MLB told the MLBPA that they wanted to ensure that Cabrera couldn't win the batting title, and the MLBPA and Cabrera's agents negotiated for it to be at his request to give it a better PR spin for him. Just speculating, of course, but I wouldn't be surprised. In fact, that's exactly what you'd expect the MLBPA to do -- protect its players, even those who are suspended for PEDs.

You also have to wonder if the Giants agitated for this as well -- not just to avoid another suspect record/award for one of their own, but because Posey is just .004 behind McCutchen at the moment. I may have wandered down the conspiracy path there a bit, but you have to wonder...

Plenty of players and other celebrities do really dumb stuff despite being advised otherwise by agents or unions. At the end of it all the decision is his, and he made the right call.

True. In reading more, it does seem that Cabrera stepped up first and asked the league to remove him from consideration.

Damn. I need to be less cynical.

At the Rays game. Star Trek night. Will try to post some Klingon pics later.

You should have been tweeting

Huh yeah I missed that.

Awesome finish last night, 6 runs to rally in the 9th.

And continuing tonight with an 8-0 romp of Toronto in the 4th already.

Here come the Rays! Another double digit scoring night.

Bummer that the White Sox are only half a game up on the Tigers, but I'm excited for the very real possibility of the first triple crown hitter since 1967. Miguel Cabrera is tied for the AL lead in HRs and leads the league in RBIs and BA by a pretty fair margin.

Woohoo. David Price complete game, 19th win. 5-2 over Boston! Rays are still in it.

I knew when I saw that the Tigers had series left with only the Royals and Twins that there'd be trouble for the White Sox. Swept by the Angels and lost today to Cleveland. Damn shame if they don't make the postseason. This has been a fun team.

7 in a row!

Rodney ties the club record with 45 saves.

Go Rays!

As a Mets fan, there hasn't been much to cheer about since the All-Star break, but David Wright broke Ed Kranepool's franchise hits record the other day and R.A. Dickey just got his 20th win this afternoon against the Pirates. First Met to do that since Frank Viola in 1990.

It ain't a playoff spot, but I'll take what I can get.

This is the first year since I was in college that I didn't go to any games. I appreciate what Wright & Dickey did, but can't be bothered to give a damn about the team as long as the Wilpons are still in charge.

The wife & I trudged to Citi today. 'Twas a really good time, with the requisite near-collapse at the end because nothing with the Mets is ever simple. For such a disappointing season (yet again), some memorable highlights this year. Johan's no-hitter, Wright setting the Mets' hits record, Dickey winning 20...

I had one of the Pat Lafrieda filet mignon sandwiches from the new stands left of Shake Shack. Yum.

Jealous. About the game and the sandwich.

So I guess this will be playoff baseball tonight in Chicago. White Sox vs Rays for 4 days. One team or the other probably needs 3 of these 4 to make the playoffs, and the other team will miss them. A 2-2 split might knock both teams out.

Go Rays!

YES! Rodney gets save 46. Longoria solo HR in the top of the 9th! Rays win! 8 in a row.

I don't think either the White Sox OR Rays are going to make the playoffs. But the White Sox would have a chance if the Rays would just roll over like good kids.

You haven't been to a game yet this year have you karma? Since you moved?

The 162 Landing area is awesome. They have photos up of the various games, and a timeline as everything happened that night.

Nada since I moved. That is pretty darn cool though!

I'm a huge White Sox fan right now. It'd make things so much easier for the O's.

sh*t, sh*t, sh*t.

Rays lost. Orioles won. A's winning. Angels winning.

This one day might have ended it.

At the very least it took it back out of our hands. We have to win Sat/Sun and have the Orioles lose at least one to put it back in our power to sweep them at home. Sheesh.

Can you guys beat the O's for me?

I think the A's are going to take the AL West.

Let's Go Oak-Land!

Wow. Rays woke the hell up today. 7-0 in the 7th.

And Oakland is losing in the 8th.

If the worthless Red Sox could try and beat the Orioles tonight this might get things back on track.

Red Sox can't get it done. Orioles share the division leading with the Yankees.

This upcoming series against the Rays is looking AWESOME.

The A's one. I want the Angels to take both games against the Rangers tomorrow, and hopefully the A's can sweet the M's. I think the A's are going to take the AL West.

Oh wow I didn't realize the As close with 3 against Texas, just like the Rays do against Baltimore.

This is going to be an interesting week.

The AL West and East are providing the best entertainment in sports. so entertaining.

Well the Rays put the White Sox all but out of it today.

But the Orioles won. So we can't catch them even if we sweep. We have to have Oakland lose now. And the Angels lose one more too. Jeez.

What are the rules for a 3-way tie?

Oakland isn't going to lose. If the Angels can somehow beat the Rangers tonight, I have a feeling the A's are going to take the division.

You're welcome to root for the A's come playoff time.
