Pacific Rim, a movie by Guillermo del Toro

Ultimately when watching these trailers my biggest thought is "Man, this fight would go a whole lot easier if they had a couple C-130 gunships demolishing their targets". Hopefully I'll be able to turn off that part of my brain when I see the movie.

Wouldn't be as fun though

I had two thoughts on seeing the trailer: "cool, giant robots!" and "what idiot is was flying that F-22?" Just for once, I'd like to see a movie like this actually have semi-plausible explanations to deal with the conventional military.

Yawny yawny yawnerson.

Maybe is why. Giant robots smashing sh*t up would have been the bomb when I was 12. Not so much at 36.

This 36 year old thought it was awesome.

Though I do find myself thinking "I hope the story lives up to the visuals" rather than "OMG this is the best thing ever!"

That might be the thing. My sense of cynicism is 36 going on 90. Because I'll bet my left ball that the story is laughably thin and forgettable. Also, CGI-fatigue has a lot to say on this topic.

As long as the plot is better than Godzilla vs. Gigan I'll be happy.

But I mean, once you accept giant ass monsters coming out of the cracks of the Earth from the oceans and tearing our cities apart, then you're pretty much on board for just about anything.

There are ass monsters in this movie?!?! SOLD!

I need to find out if attaching "ass" to a descriptive term is a New Jersey thing or something unique to my brother and me.

Nope.

Giant robots punching giant monsters is the movie I've always wanted.

Directed by a guy with a great track record as well. Which is one of the reasons why I'm allowing myself to be more hyped for this than any other blockbuster this year.

Yeah, Guillermo del Toro has definitely earned the benefit of the doubt in my book:

Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Pan's Labyrinth
Hellboy
Blade II
Mimic

I think your lack of hyphen threw him off.

^ That beast would certainly be a great counter to the ass crack monster...

And Devil's Backbone, one of the great ghost stories of the last 13 years. Also he championed The Ophanage, one of the other great ghost stories.

He only produced that one. I'm still going to see it, though. Jamie Lannister and quasi-gothed up Chastain? Come on!

Oh! Pacific Trim! It's not too late, right?

It's never too late for porn titles.

I thought it was great.

God I love that idea because Del Toro HAS to be exploiting that in wonderfully evil ways. A Kaiju movie wrapped around the secret thoughts of flawed humans. Totally on board with that!

I can't wait to see what you guys think after actually watching the movie!

I can't wait until Saturday when I will be seeing this movie.

Seeing it in Willoughby tonight at 740! Unfortunately in 2d but I plan going to a 3d imax when I'm back in North carolina this weekend.

3d IMAX with a gang of friends and my younger son tonight at 10 pm. This workday is going to be looooong.

So was this shot in 3d, or is it a conversion?

It was shot in 2d I believe but there is so much CGI it doesn't matter. Plus, del toro spent a lot of time molding the 3d film. He actually told the crew they would enjoy tgd 3d imax best.

I am going to see it tonight, just don't know what times yet.

It really is a movie where the 3D works. If you have a chance to see it in 3D, I suggest you do.
