[trailer] Oblivion

Sci-Fi, Tom Cruise, lots of CGI...could be watchable.

Ah cool, I was reading about this project earlier this year and it sounded interesting. Glad to see it's on its way to theaters.

His ship looks like it was designed by Apple. All it needs is the logo.

Isaac Hayes? Space Chef?

Looks interesting, probably worth a watch... However, I think I can see the "twist" just from this trailer:

Spoiler:

Seems like the aliens won the war...

Sort of like Moon crossed with that one episode from The Outer Limits.

- so beware, potential watchers.

From what I read way back when you're not too far off. The original storyline synopsis that was in that article mentioned

Spoiler:

that the humans falling to earth in the pods are actually clones of survivors, and that Jack is a clone as well

I was stupidly expecting some sort of Elder Scrolls link!

Don't forget Julie Newmar starring as Miss Kitty :/

I was too slow on the draw.
Looks like I'd like it. Expectation management.

Well, I don't feel like I need to see the movie at all now after that trailer. Way too much of the movie crammed in there.

Oblivion... it comes and goes.

Yeah, I feel the same, and hate that movie practice. Is there some kind of trailers suck website that lists whether new trailers are bad about this, or not?

Hmmmm. I think the trailer hurts it. Could be fun. Reminded of this one that also seems to be coming out soon. Compare and Contrast!

Love the art direction for Oblivion. The mech-y bad guys look cool, especially. Glad it's an original IP — not tied to some book/graphic novel, etc. Wish it wasn't Cruise, though.

After Earth looks awful.

But more SF — yay!

So I know he didn't write the script but given M. Night Shamalayn's involvement, what are the odds that 'future Earth' is actually our 'past Earth'!

Hmm, could be interesting. Why did it look like Darth Vader was about to hit Jack with the butt of a rifle?

So is anyone planning to see this? I think I might go with my wife tomorrow night.

The more I hear and read about it the less interested I have become. The few reviews I've read have said the same thing — looks cool, but the story is a retread of various other SF movies. Which sucks. Was hoping for a good, new SF story.

Didn't you hear? There are no new stories...

“There are no new stories. It all depends on how you handle them. [snip] It's how you get there: that's the fun.”

Actually, I kind of agree with that. There are only so many "human-centric" stories and character arcs that we recognise culturally. If you differ from those your audience is unable to empathise with the characters and unable to resonate with the themes that you set out: it becomes an alien experience as much as a dog's dream or understanding of the world might be when compared with our own.

I saw it recently. It was pretty decent, the story is actually quite straight forward (I picked the big twist almost immediately), but the concepts in play are interesting enough, at least for someone who doesn't read or watch a tonne of sci-fi. It's actually kind of nice that there's no ambiguity, by the end you'll understand everything that has happened, as compared to something more high concept like Prometheus or Inception.

So I give it a solid 'worth watching', with the usual warning being that I pretty much like everything, and will rate just about any old bollocks as 'worth watching'.

Thanks for the review Redwing. I definitely think this will be a rental but I'm interested in checking it out. I'm like you, I pretty much like everything.

Watched this today. Solid enjoyable sci-fi, not for the grognards though, I'm sure there are a billion nits to pick. The ship and drone design, and the music, have a very Mass Effect feel.

Trailers and previews gave away more info than ideal, but not everything. Did see a most of the twists coming, but it's a pretty classic story well told and well acted.

According to the credits it is based on a graphic novel.

A few tracks really did have a Mass Effect vibe, which I thought worked great with movie. But a lot of the music, especially during action and high emotion scenes, seemed really overbearing and on the nose...

There was an interesting article on Bleeding Cool about the genesis of the movie, and how there really wasn't ever a graphic novel. The director just kind of faked one to generate interest in the film.

Movie Bob over at the escapist tore it a new one. My tastes align with his probably at 70%, and there are some tremendous disagreements (he thought Captain America was not only good, but one of the best in decades...seriously, WTF).

Still though, I agree most of the time, and from the impressions I got from the trailer, to what Tom Cruise has reduced himself to in the past years, plus Movie Bob's review....yeah, I think I'll pass. Not even a rental. I'll wait til this either hits TV, or I'm stuck at an airplane watching it.

Kexx, what's wrong with you? Captain America was a good film! I've watched it at least three times now!

Now there's an endorsement

That's an interesting titbit, I'll check that article out. Thanks.

He can't help being drunk, he's Irish! He's also correct, Captain America *is* good. It's not perfect, nor is it one of the all-time classics, but it the nails the characters.

Anyway, Oblivion is kind of a waving thumb. It looks amazing, Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise which basically works for me, Andrea Riseborough is great, but after an intriguing opening it descends into standard genre beats halfway through and I progressively lost interest.

It is very frustrating, but if you saw the trailer, you didn't just get an impression of the film, you got a summary. The art of the trailer as a tease without revealing too much seems to be mostly lost.

I thought Movie Bob review was a little harsh especially with respect to Tom Cruise, but overall on target.

I agree! It's not like Tom Cruise is Nicholas Cage...
