Guild Wars 2 - Spelunking Club (The Arah Initiative)

Pages

My fellow GWJ spelunkers, lets get ourselves organized.

The guild has a lot of players now reaching levels 30-50 and looking to do story mode runs of the GW dungeons, but it often happens than not everyone is on at the same time. This leads to situations where there is one or two people asking after a dungeon while other people are already engaged in other things, etc. Some of us already have run the story modes for the early dungeons several times and might not be interested in doing the story mode every other day (what with the rewards being nerfed).

Because many of the GWJ crew have lives (*gasp*) it might be nice to organize ourselves to have a night to run dungeons with people going up the ranks, and eventually organize our on explorable mode semi-expert runs. This would ideally be a dungeon friendly time where some of us with more dungeon experience can help out, or when similar level players can team up and run dungeons together.

----------------------

The times we've decided to set aside for dungeons are Thursday evenings at 20:00h EST and 20:00h PST. This should allow for several groups to run, and for people across our busiest time zones to participate.

For player who want to run some of the earlier dungeons' story modes for the first time, please send me a message in game (Tyops.5894) or on the boards here and I will use this post to try and help organize the run. For others interested in later dungeons, or interested in various explorable modes, feel free to do the same.

This is great because I need to run the Lvl 50 and 60 dungeons with one toon, the 40 with another, and I'm closing in on the 30 with a 3rd.

Anyway, since Thursday was shot down for WvW night, how about Thursday for dungeon night?

Thursday works for me. On central time here.

Thursday would be a great night for scheduled dungeoneering.

Thursdays would be a good night for me as I (usually) have Fridays off. Central time zone here as well.

I'm currently a level 62 guardian, but have not done the 50 or 60 level dungeons yet. I'd also look forward to explore mode of the other dungeons, as I haven't done that yet either.

Since we're thinking about moving the PVP night to Saturdays, I'd be down for Thursday dungeon runs.

Thursday seem fine EST although I've ran AC CM TA (30-50 dungeon) enough times that I may say no to story mode. I am all up for explorable AC and HOTW though, and storymode for the 60 and up dungeons.

Also I should mention that if you're getting near 80, it's worthwhile to invest in two sets - one for PvE and one for dungeoning. Think of the latter set as the same set for WvW, more emphasis on survival, no magic find, weapons sets that are more suitable for group combat).

I'm of the same mind. Im only truly interested explorer mode. If i have the time and on i dont mind to help finalize a group for story, but not my primary preference.

Just getting into the 30s here. So looking for noob runs.

I'd be willing to hop over from Gates of Madness for a weekly dungeon night or two. I'm level 70 at the moment, but I'm more than willing to run any of them.

Thursday works fine for me. For those wondering, you don't have to complete the story mode to access explorer mode. As long as one person has access to explorer, everyone can piggyback into that version of the instance. Explorer also gives you the tokens for LA vendors armor sets/weapons/legendary gifts. The story runs seem to be longer in general (1.5-2 hrs), while completing 1 of 3 explorer paths seem to be anywhere from 30-45 minutes.

Sounds like we're leaning towards Thursdays, what were you thinking for a start time?

Ditto.
I just got my invite at 34 (or something) and would like to get down.
Hey! it's Thursday!

Oh except I'm, not usually on until 9PM EST. Well I'll just go there and see what happens.

Oh is there an easy way to get there if you have not wandered into that area yet?

Would definitely be interested in this. Thursday night is fine with me as well, and 8 or 9pm (EST) would work great as as starting time. I'm at level 45 with my main and would love to try out the 30 and 40 dungeons with some fellow GwJ'ers.

And if it comes to it, most other nights would be fine too. Friday and Saturday hardest to justify with wife.

Nope. Start walking.

Actually, if you are in the same area as your party when they enter the dungeon, you will warp in.

So, couple questions. Are we starting this tonight? And are we planning on using vent?

I'm fine either way with vent - yes or no - i think it can be nice to get quick and easy feedback/advice from better players and to strategize, but I also know it's a little bit of a pain to set up and some people might be averse to using it. I've already got the GWJ vent server stuff installed but have not yet logged on or used it.

I'm game for story mode 40 CM or explore mode AC.

Vent is definitely a good idea. Even if they don't want to talk, it's very helpful to listen in.

pain as in slightly time consuming, but if nothing else like stengah said it's good to be on even if you do nothing but listen.

I'd say Vent is critical for a dungeon. Communication and teamwork are pretty important. The dungeons are much harder than the rest of the PvE content.

OK. I'll go ahead and call it for Thursdays.

Dungeon runs are likely to go a lot smoother with vent, but it's certainly possible without. I've done both. Paying attention goes a long way. One of our threads has a good guide for setting it up and I havent really had any issues myself.

I think it would be too soon to start tonight and expect big results. But nothing stops us from being there and actually doing dungeons. Let's aim for a formal start and a lot of fanfare for next Thursday.

Picking a start time that works from East to West coast seems tricky, especially because some of these dungeons are somewhat long. That's why I suggested 2 main flights: one at 8pm EST, and one at 8pm PST. Other arrangements might work, but I think those are good times to aim for to get the ball rolling.

Hey,

Thanks to those of you who partied with me in Ascalon Catacombs last night. Good times.

These dungeons really can be a pain in the ass, but it's gratifying to finish one and the challenge is welcome after the relative calm of PvE.

Yeah our run through AC exploreable wasnt nearly as painful as I thought it might be. Good times. I look forward to many other explorable dungeon runs.

I think Yesterday evening worked out well enough, but I'm concerned that we could be doing a better job helping players in the 30-50 range complete the story modes of the dungeons. For next Thursday, if there are people interested in running Ascalonian Catacombs or Caudecus' Manor in story mode, please message me, I will keep a running list in the first post and try to help make the run happens without resorting to pugs *shudder*.

That was a pretty fun run through AC explorable. That was the "easy" route? That one Lieutenant guy and his pull was pretty ridiculous.

I tried a few different things throughout that run. One, I added the res skill for the guardian- but that cool down time for it is ridiculously long, and it only works on 'downed', not 'defeated', players. I also tried a couple different weapon sets. At the end I switched to mace/shield and tanked the last boss with the ranger's pet. But it was said that he was a pretty easy end boss, so I don't know how effective that set is. I'll need to spend more time with it.

I'm slightly above the 30-50 range mentioned above. I reached level 63 at the end of last night's run, and would love to find a party for the levels 50 and 60 dungeons in story mode.

I need to run the 50 and 60 dungeons too. If you see me online, definitely hit me up.

Ah, I totally forgot that their were 3 routes and was wondering how you guys breezed through it. The night we tried it (mostly 30s in the group) we chose the hard route.

Yeah, when we ran it, I had no idea which was the hard route...we got crushed.

Hey, I've gotten my alt Guardian up to level 12 or so, and I'm still trying to get a handle on my favorite weapons. If you have any advice, please share. So far, I like Hammer and Great Sword for some simple melee AOE, and Scepter+Torch for ranged. I just started using Mace+Shield and I kinda like it, esp. if I'm with a group. But it's not quite as satisfying as slamming that hammer around.

I'm now in the upper 60s with my Guardian, and I'm still trying to get a handle on my favorite weapons. Honestly, I keep the best of each of the weapons I can use in my inventory at all times.

I keep coming back to Scepter+Torch, though. There are times when you just need some ranged attacks. But I've also run with Hammer/Greatsword- it so fun to Banish enemies with the hammer, then pull them back with the greatsword's Binding Blade.

Then I've run with Sword+focus/Greatsword. Each weapon has a teleport, or leap, for mobility, and it's fun to be all blade all the time. But then mace+shield has its uses too, as you said, with a group. Yet, I kinda have trouble with how long the swings take with the mace- I know there have been times I've run into a fight to support someone, but the enemy is dead before I even lay down the Symbol of Faith skill.

The only thing I know for sure, is that I'm not a fan of the staff on a guardian. Too passive, and the attack skills too weak. Only situationally useful with a group- almost useless when solo.

If you're interested, I've run AC explorable maybe 4 times with a core same group. The guardian that usually accompanies our AC explorable run uses greatsword/mace+shield. Opens with blinding blades pull, gathers up enemies together, equips mace & shield, then turns defensive skills on. It works wonderfully.

I've pretty much ignored mace/shield so far but I'd be real interested in that build. That's how I'd like to play dungeons but I haven't been able to tank diddly in any of them.
